Frightning Realization

Something that just hit (and scared the crap out of) me, if multiplayer and single player are one
and the same on Brink, that means our multiplayer characters stats will be saved on our hard drive
and not one the SD servers like GTA4 does. Ergo it will be easy for programs like Modio to f*** things
up for the rest of us. :sadvaultboy:

Yea I thought about this too but hopefully SD can come out with some patches quick for them so we wont get screwed. :(

You're worried about other peoples stats? I'll tell you something I've been certain about since Call of Duty on Xbox. The top 100 to 150 people on the leader boards are hackers/boosters with the occasional legit guy.

How do I know this? I've been within those numbers twice on two different games and played many games with those above and below me in those rankings....they all hack or boost, almost entierely.

World leader boards mean nothing anymore, games should do away with them. Show only a players friend's standings and be done with it.

My two games were Halo and CoD3. I was the 123 sniper in the world in COD3 for almost four months & have a letter congratulating me on my skill as a sniper in Halo 2 or three, forgot honestly.

Anyway, I'm just telling you...I've been amongst, communicated and played with "top" standing folks in leaderboards and very few of them are actually legit...other people's stats therefore mean nothing to me.

As a LEGIT multi-tournament champion on MGO (Metal Gear Solid Online), you will almost ALWAYS be faced with hackers becoming jealous, threatened, or intimidated by your skills in some way shape or form. They will try to "best" everyone by using cheap tactics such as Lagswitchers, MOA, Net Tools, etc.

The only thing I would be worried about as far as hackers stand is that they may find ways of having a boost of XP which unlocks everything for them or using those devices against you in matchmaking. Maybe if we are lucky we can have in game tournaments that can give you "exclusive" items only gained from winning, whilst the "Watchmen" (Dev's) overlook the game to find and eliminate hackers. :grad:

Might be uploaded to the Steam Cloud if they're uploaded anywhere.

I suggest that they're stored on your hard drive so that you can edit them at will, on or offline, and whenever you join a multiplayer game it 'uploads' your character or something to that effect.

They'll be rank 5 within a short time, but we won't, so we won't bump into them for a while ;)

You get matched with people of the same rank. So why would you be worried about someone youre not even going to be playing with, the people you get matched with are going to have the same level abilities that you would of had the opportunity to purchase at that rank.

It's more about loseing that sense of accomplishment, you work hard to unlock that super rare clothing
or awsome weapon attachement and people can just say "pfft...you modded that noob" I worked hard to
master my headshots in Red Dead and everyone accuses you of aim-botting and it's frustrating

Theres no mod for this game yet, so theres no cheats. In order to impliment aimbots and wallhacks and stuff said person has to have a way in, in the first place. Brink doesn't have an SDK or mod tools, so theres nothing to worry about being called a "modding-noob." your safe.

Borderlands originally did store data client side which turned out to be a huge faux pas, and they paid for it expensively. It severely halted community growth, and destroyed the replay and online play value for the game. They really [censored] up. That's why now they store their data server side. Too little too late though. Borderlands could've been a lot larger.

Client side data is a bad decision for any loot/exp based game which takes that info online. If BRINK does this, I will have to send a very harshly worded letter to Splash Damage explaining why it's wrong, how it will affect the game, sales, future sales, and the community.

This isn't talking about hacking, it's talking about modifying profile files to get more weapons if they are stored locally. As a comparison people did this with Call of Duty 4 to get all golden weapons without doing the challenges. The argument for why its possible makes sense, if you can play the game offline then it must store the data offline. If the game stores the data offline than a user can find it and, in theory, edit it. Hopefully SD encrypts the files so it is harder or not possible.

You made a very good point about the Steam Cloud - it is highly likely that this will be integrated and will consequently make characters stored online as the only way to play Brink is by using Steam.

I can't find where I read it, but I know that I read on an official site that Brink would indeed use Steam Cloud for saved data and stats

Yeah but people like to be recognized for their actions. If I was the greatest combat controller in the air force, I'd want my fellow combat controllers to realize that. (example from me, I'm going into combat control in the air force after basic and air trafficking) That's besides the point though. You shouldn't care if people think negatively of you, but you should still put yourself out there to see if they think positively.

Sincerely I don't care. They can mod all they want, as long as they dont ruin my experience online I'll be happy pounding their faces in when I play against them :D

Eh! Hopefully we won't see nothing like this. Would be annoying to have all maxed characters, but wouldn't have an advantage in the game.

Every game wants to prevent this, but almost every game has some sort of modding in it. Inevitable....maybe?!

If people hack levels and to unlock stuff, they may as well have just done the challenges, and SD have said the unlocks don't give you "better" stuff than you start with - they just give you more options.

And besides, if you level up ridiculously, you'll only be playing against other high-level players, which at first will mostly be other boosters who don't actually know HOW to play, and cheated to get there, with the odd few legitimately skilled players who will trample those people and make them feel stupid.

Then, after a while, less-skilled legit players will catch up, and the boosters will be outclassed by people who also OUTNUMBER them, and they'll ragequit and move on to the next game. :celebration:
