From Bitterness to an Unusual Feeling of Support - My Story

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 2:42 pm

Mods - forgive me if this is the wrong place for a topic like this.

Okay - for a while when I first started playing the TES series, I never really concerned much about Bethesda, nor what they did. It wasn't until 2009 that I started getting interested in game development, and unlike your average 13-year-old (I'm 16 now, FYI), I was already considering my career by then. My plan was (and still is today) to work at Jagex Games Studio, the guys who create RuneScape, but I also did consider other studio options as well, such as Ubisoft, Eidos, EA, Activision, and Bethesda. Besides Jagex, Bethesda and Ubisoft were two studios I was more familiar of, and they were my main backups.

It was this past year, in 2011 that my feelings toward Bethesda started to change. I went from being interested to being uninterested, to eventually becoming bitter. I didn't like a lot of the things Bethesda was doing - such as the closing of the PC DLC store for Oblivion, uber slow customer support, and I thought that they were treating their customers improperly. My opinions on Steam being Skyrim's platform, all of the patches that seemed to cause more issues than fix them, etc, were similar - that I thought it was just flat-out stupid. And though, to this day, I still don't care for the decision to use Steam, but I've accepted that it's been used, and that it's not as bad as being required to pay $15 a month like you would for a certain MMO that I hate. ;)

Now, anyways, I'll forwardly state that I had never considered ever selling my Bethesda games, nor did I ever consider not buying the future games, but I definitely wasn't happy with Bethesda. I actually took both Bethesda and Ubisoft out of the question completely for my career backups at this point. But then, with the passing of Mr Adamowicz, I saw the words of kindness that his fellow employees said about him, and I watched the Fallout 3 Making Of DVD - that changed my opinions on them. I started to feel almost connected to them, and they gained my support back. Before this incident, I felt so disconnected with them - they seemed to me, like distant, almost jerk-like people. But that is COMPLETELY changed now - I realize that my thoughts were foolish and uncalled-for, and they have gained my support back. They're now on the backup list of possible future employers.

Here's a bit on my updated possible plan for my life -

I originally had plans to work at Family Video for a few years to make up the funds to get to the UK, but I realize that only 2 years would likely get me around 36k - the cost of living in the UK is REALLY high compared to the US, so it's unfortunately probably not enough to set up a living there. I really would like to get out of the US ASAP, because I'm growing tired of the junk going on here, but I realize that unless I'm going to be able to make it with room to breathe, I'm not going to just rush myself into the UK and have to struggle insanely to survive. I want to play the game of life (no, not the board game ;) ) as well as possible. So, I've actually put into consideration of possibly working at Bethesda to get my funds, and I'll be able to get that money while doing something that I truly want to do. It seems like they have a lot of fun as well.

I know I'll probably receive a load of flaming or criticism about my decision and my thoughts on the situation. To you who think that Bethesda are the bad guys, to you who aren't buying any more Bethesda games because of something you don't like, to you who are never satisfied with anything - please, follow my example. You're wasting your time complaining, when you could be enjoying the epicness that is TES, Fallout 3, etc. There's nothing wrong about feedback - but feedback can be carried away. If you're going to tell Bethesda about something you DON'T like, at least be kind enough to consider that they are only human, and that there are people who dedicate LARGE portions of their lives to make the games that we all love to play.

That's it, I'm done - flame away.

All I know is that planing your life is useless especially at your age. It never goes the way you planned..

Lol I used to want to work for Jagex as well when I was 13. I was a HUGE runescape fan. Yeah so I don't really know what to say and I don't really have a reason to flame you, so I'll just let other people do it.

I think it is refreshing to see a young person that actually has set some goals for life before they are 25, at least in this country. So, way to go! At least you have some idea of a direction you would like to go.

that said, posting on bethesda board that you hated them, but now feel you would work for them for long enough to get out of the country is probably not so great of an approach to submitting your resume and inquiring about a job interview.

Remember, when you post it on the internet, everyone can see it. Not just on twitter and facebook etc. some things are better kept to yourself or close friends you can discuss it with in person. Don't feed the beast.

Mines a Tad different in this bitterness to support

I didn't keep up with Bethesda's developement of Oblivion, it just so happen one day I was logging into thelderscrolls.com and there was this supremely badass image of what I thought was Dagoth ur surrounded in flames, it was an instant like and I had no idea what it was about, a time later I found out it was the next installment of the TES series and immediately took desire, BUT I didn't frequent the forums in over a year at the time and really didn't look for details.

Some days before Oblivions release there was alot of grinning faces so to speak, threads about money shots, Radiant Ai, Combat, graphics, how new and revolutionized everything was were rampant. I finally got the game and played, it but I never SAT DOWN and played it extensively. overtime however I began to notice the missing things, low choice in weapons, armor, skills, and how there really wasn't that much of a distinction between the races. I then Went back to Morrowind for a while since I found myself getting Bored, and when I tried Oblivion again I was really annoyed at the differences, and suddenly todds statement about gaining a wider audience clicked and I didn't like what was born of it. so I dropped Oblivion, let it collect dust and never really played it past a month. couple of years past, and some sixy mods came out, the buddings of OOO and some magic mods like SM and Mighty Magick doing things never possible in Morrowind satiated me for a time, but it wasn't after extensive Mod downloading and Self modding did I find enjoyment in the game.

Fo3 came out, and I wasn't really hooked, it lacked the flavor of FO1-2 and some things really didn't make sense about the story, I felt it took itself too seriously and at the same time had no reason too, not much of a Post apocalyptic survival game when some teen fresh out the vault can dust a squad of battle hardended blood thirsty Raiders, but thats a whole other story, I didn't keep up with FO3's development either but I was definently involved in the Modding, yes I was mad when the GECK wasn't readily availible. yes I like NV better.

So lets fast forward after a few years of light modding NV/Oblivion/FO3 etc etc, looking at the next TES thread with the suggestions people had, some really nice and sensible suggestions I might add, then Skyrim's announcement rolls in :woot: unprecidented and didn't see it coming and was worth the laugh looking at Todds slightly off looking eye masking the "wtf" as the dudes behind him do some chant for the announcement. I had not been more excited for anything game wise in my life up to that point, My face was on any information that came across immediately for Skyrim...and with each subsequent news I was disheartend more and more as the words/phrases streamline, and gaining and wider audience fluttered about and the only thing new was Dragons, oh the pride they put in Dragons, and rightfully so I'd say, you can't find a game that does Dragons like Skyrim. but to what extent? everything else either stayed the same and was just repackaged or got Cut, and on top of that the really facepalming design desicions.

So yes I was bitter, for much nay all of 2011 Its gone down because I already knew alot of things about Skyrim before release, Common sense more than anything anyway. Skyrim had the same luster and fade as Oblivion for me I've not played it extensively going on 2 months now, only going on for 30 mins or so to test some modding concepts etc etc. I'll get back in the boat sure, but thats when I'm done shaping it/DLC comes out that has a chunk in of what was taken out, thats more or less all I want, things done right in past TES games to be present/improved upon ;p.

so the unusual feeling of support? came from the Game Jam thing, if anything about the premise of it was true (just letting the designers go crazy) then I clap fervently since I know of no other Dev group that lets everyone drop their pants and gets some breeze with creative freedom. I'm also unusally supportive because when you think about it, they are the only peeps out there making games like this barring any knowledge of how much effort they Put into the World, I would Love if they put in more effort, nay not more effort Rethink where and how they apply that effort.

I may "gripe" and "moan" and "whine" but I'm pretty much always going to be a TES fan :tes: I just wish they'd stop with the wtf design descisions.

I suggest not coming here, the UK svcks in it's own ways.
If you want to live among us tea and biscuit connoisseurs, I'd make sure you've got a job ready and waiting for you when you get here.

I'm getting a bit OT I guess. I personally don't take TES too seriously, some changes make me a bit annoyed, others quite glad, but I've never been bitter.
Likewise I don't think anyone should take feedback and nerd rage too seriously. Chill out, smoke a- you know what I'm not going to finish that.

@Milkiway - It does if you do things correctly.

@Eldagore - I didn't say I hated Bethesda, I just really didn't like how they were being. But I now see WHY they were being the way they were. Plus, in the past year, I've grown up a lot since the days when I was still trying to find out what was going on. :P

@MK - Good story, my friend. :)

@Brugdush - I understand that no country is perfect, but I can't abide the US's government any longer. At least you guys have a monarchy (though mainly ceremonial), and there's always a chance the monarchy's old role could return. Being the monarchist that I am, if there's a chance, I'm willing to accept it. And I do plan on having ALL of the preparations made BEFORE I fly over. :)
