Okay - for a while when I first started playing the TES series, I never really concerned much about Bethesda, nor what they did. It wasn't until 2009 that I started getting interested in game development, and unlike your average 13-year-old (I'm 16 now, FYI), I was already considering my career by then. My plan was (and still is today) to work at Jagex Games Studio, the guys who create RuneScape, but I also did consider other studio options as well, such as Ubisoft, Eidos, EA, Activision, and Bethesda. Besides Jagex, Bethesda and Ubisoft were two studios I was more familiar of, and they were my main backups.
It was this past year, in 2011 that my feelings toward Bethesda started to change. I went from being interested to being uninterested, to eventually becoming bitter. I didn't like a lot of the things Bethesda was doing - such as the closing of the PC DLC store for Oblivion, uber slow customer support, and I thought that they were treating their customers improperly. My opinions on Steam being Skyrim's platform, all of the patches that seemed to cause more issues than fix them, etc, were similar - that I thought it was just flat-out stupid. And though, to this day, I still don't care for the decision to use Steam, but I've accepted that it's been used, and that it's not as bad as being required to pay $15 a month like you would for a certain MMO that I hate.
Now, anyways, I'll forwardly state that I had never considered ever selling my Bethesda games, nor did I ever consider not buying the future games, but I definitely wasn't happy with Bethesda. I actually took both Bethesda and Ubisoft out of the question completely for my career backups at this point. But then, with the passing of Mr Adamowicz, I saw the words of kindness that his fellow employees said about him, and I watched the Fallout 3 Making Of DVD - that changed my opinions on them. I started to feel almost connected to them, and they gained my support back. Before this incident, I felt so disconnected with them - they seemed to me, like distant, almost jerk-like people. But that is COMPLETELY changed now - I realize that my thoughts were foolish and uncalled-for, and they have gained my support back. They're now on the backup list of possible future employers.
Here's a bit on my updated possible plan for my life -
I originally had plans to work at Family Video for a few years to make up the funds to get to the UK, but I realize that only 2 years would likely get me around 36k - the cost of living in the UK is REALLY high compared to the US, so it's unfortunately probably not enough to set up a living there. I really would like to get out of the US ASAP, because I'm growing tired of the junk going on here, but I realize that unless I'm going to be able to make it with room to breathe, I'm not going to just rush myself into the UK and have to struggle insanely to survive. I want to play the game of life (no, not the board game ) as well as possible. So, I've actually put into consideration of possibly working at Bethesda to get my funds, and I'll be able to get that money while doing something that I truly want to do. It seems like they have a lot of fun as well.
I know I'll probably receive a load of flaming or criticism about my decision and my thoughts on the situation. To you who think that Bethesda are the bad guys, to you who aren't buying any more Bethesda games because of something you don't like, to you who are never satisfied with anything - please, follow my example. You're wasting your time complaining, when you could be enjoying the epicness that is TES, Fallout 3, etc. There's nothing wrong about feedback - but feedback can be carried away. If you're going to tell Bethesda about something you DON'T like, at least be kind enough to consider that they are only human, and that there are people who dedicate LARGE portions of their lives to make the games that we all love to play.
That's it, I'm done - flame away.
