Ultimately I think Skyrim was just a very poor game to try this idea with, for all of the reasons that people have listed over the past few days. It just isn't feasible currently without doing way more damage than what could potentially be gained.

And like you said, I'm sure another game will turn up soon with the same model. I'm not fully against the idea, it just has to be done right, which this time around it wasn't.
