Well this is just interesting. I know the backlash was really bad but I didn't realize it was REALLY THAT BAD, enough to cause Valve to scrap the idea.

Many changes, many changes...

I am in total agreement. This is absolutely incredible. I'm not sure if its even credible. Bethesda just uploaded a blog post in support of paid mods a couple hours ago.

While I feel for the modders who won't be able to make an income from their work, I feel this is ultimately a good thing. It pissed a lot of people off, and now it's gone. Hopefully things can go back to normal. :)

A good lesson to take from this is, don't be greedy. Either side. If you can, occasionally donate to modders. Let them know they're appreciated. And modders, let your fans know the same. :)

On that note, I feel like a hypocrite as I have no pay pal.

Which I found odd, first the blog post supporting it then Valve basically says "lol jk". What a wild couple of days

Btw, good to see you again, Mankar. Been a long time! :tops:

This is good they're going to rethink paid mods. I can pretty much guarantee they're going to try again hopefully with a lot more transparency and with the community centered focus. I rather have mods remain free but I'd rather have a say in the future of the inevitability then to be shut out completely.

I wouldn't be surprised if Valve shut this down without Bethesda's consultation. I'm sure they notified them, but I don't think BGS had a say. Unless they really did just all change their minds in the last couple hours. And Pete hasn't tweeted anything yet.

Edit: yes he has, and bethesda has released a short statement. http://www.bethblog.com/

This is good. The only way it will work is a donation button, simple as. Any attempt to bring it back in any other form will raise the pitchforks again.

This leads me to believe that Valve is rethinking how to handle the situation in Bethesda is leaving it to them to fix these issues. Unfortunately Bethesda needs to claim some responsibility and commit to support for Skyrim if paid mods are going to be something that'll build the community instead of divide it . A major reason that valves previous attempts have worked so well is because the base games are still very well supported by their creators due to the increased revenue, Bethesda needs to make a similar commitment if the revised model is accepted by the community. Bethesda could set a fixed amount of revenue from paid mods that needs to be made for them to continue supporting Skyrim and creation kits with patches. That would allow them to reduce risk of such an endeavor.

Valve really needs to work on a lot of the feedback that they've received but I think Bethesda should to...

Edit this was written before Bethesda updated their blog.

Don't get excited for sure yet. This is just the Skyrim workshop. They can very well bring it in for Fallout 4, or other titles on the workshop, either existing or upcoming, we can't be sure what'll happen, so I am staying cautious.

We've done this because it's clear we didn't understand exactly what we were doing

I'm impressed they admitted it, but honestly that's even worse. It means they just did it because money and without even thinking it through. Not really the kind of business decision I'd expect from an enormous company like Valve.

Still, at least it's over with. For now at least...

My Reaction

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRvAAYjmqkE

That said, I don't fault modders for wanting a piece of the pie at all and I hope no one harbours any hard feelings to those who tried it out. I have been very careful during this entire process to say I was disapointed and not that somehow Valve and Bethesda were pure-evil and I stand by that assessment. Steam has been a great platform for over 11 years now and I have played thousands of hours if you count all my gamesas games combined. Might they try this in the future with a different title? Probably... but that is another battle for another day. One thing from the Valve announcement I didn't think of, was their recognition that doing this to Skyrim of all games which had a mod community years in the making was a huge misstep. I am very pleased with the result and my faith restored in two of my favourite game developers.

Huh. Did not see *that* coming.

On one hand, I'm glad they listen to the community. On the other hand, I an rather saddened by the fact that it's gotta be an all or nothing nuclear option. I would have liked to see refinement and nuance and the option to make something for those that chose it. Hopefully the updated Nexus donation system actually does something, and maybe this whole discussion has made more people realize that mods are a labor that deserves supporting. Maybe kickstarters and patreons won't be so looked down on now.

I'd be interested in seeing if paying for mods remains legal, despite Valve no longer being involved.

Some hope regained in Fallout 4! Sey! But let's watch intently, shall Valve & Bethesda ever try us again! Hopefully their looking into feedback means a donate button in the future!

Consider me shocked as well. I would have thought that they'd ride this out for at least a little while longer. Clearly they did not anticipate this kind of reaction. Hopefully both companies can learn from this and if it is brought back, they will have taken a closer look at the community.

I don't think that's really fair. They treated the Skyrim modding community like they had with previous games. A model which worked for them and the previous games. Unfortunately their model is extremely simple and does not account for and the type of community and the unique structure it has grown into. Their experiment failed to now they're going to be literate with 2.0. I'm not getting my hopes too far up due to what I said in a previous post above.

I'm amazed with the amount of honesty in their communications that some people can still throw so many assumptions around like fact.

They've shown more honesty here than more other companies would ever even consider showing. Take that into account.

Wow, /v/ and r/gaming are just blowing up right now...

Sweet sweet victory...

I really appreciate that the community got listened. Not that they don't, just never thought action would be taken so swift.

It's really made me see things differently. I don't exactly know how to articulate my change of perspective, but the main thing this announcement has made me feel is like I should now donate to a bunch of mod authors. I think I'll set aside $20 and divide it between my favourite authors. I plan to do the same for Fallout 4. Hopefully other people have gotten something similar out of all this.

I think this is a fantastic takeaway.
