Frostcrag Reborn LOD problem not related to UL Snowdale

Since I installed http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9769 I noticed something is wrong with it at a distance, and that is that most of it seems to be floating, not connected to the mountain. I have UL Snowdale and the patch for Froscrag Reborn, so this shouldn't be the problem I think.

I also wanted to take a screenshot to show the problem here but I can't although I modified the needed value in the oblivion.ini.

not quite sure actually, because i can pretty much guarentee you that the mod itself has proper LOD. have you tried to use just UL and frostcrag reborn? just regenerate the LOD and see if it still floats...maybe snowdale still causes problems you never know.

on a side note, i'm wondering is frostcrag reborn still supported by the author?

I know that the mod itself had proper LOD since I didn't encounter the issue in a previous install. And I doubt that its Snowdale related since I think the same problem existed in my install before Snowdale was launched, although I ignored it so far.

And I don't know if its still supported by the author, I haven't seen him in the forum for a while now.

I've noticed the same thing. I have the latest Frostcrag Reborn, Snowdale, and the compatibility patch, and have regenrated LOD with TES4LODgen. The buildings at the root of the tower seem to be floating on air when watched from Imperial Isle.

Based on discussion in the UL thread, I believe this is a known issue. I believe they said it's unlikely there is a way to correct it due to limitations of LOD.

It's not UL specifically, but rather the major conflicts that Frostcrag Reborn and UL: Snowdale have in that area. The patch smooths out most of the conflicts to make the two mods work together although the LOD issue is an outstanding one.

If the floating buildings that you are referring to is the Cabin beneath the spire, this is the issue that can't really have much done about it. It was either that or try to deal with a massive LOD conflict in the spire area (where the LOD mesh shows through the regular landscape). I may go back to (try to) change this sometime later on if enough people complain, but given my experiences with landscape LOD creation, it may be a longshot.

If the spire itself is floating, you probably don't have the correct landscapeLOD installed.

And for those trying TES4LODGen, this won't help you. Landscape LOD is a separate entity and is handled much differently from Object LOD (which is all the LODGen utility works with).

OK, this is my problem, the CS LODGen is adding this pit into the distant land whenever I generate it:

My every attempt to get rid of it has been met by incredible resistance from the CS, either by the LOD regeneration failing to remove that pit or when I finally did manage to get rid of it, by causing a Land LOD conflict severe enough that masking it was out of the question.


Ah yes, the inaccuracy of the 1% representation. It's always these little details that cause the most problems, because you can make subtle tweaks to the actual land, but the LOD often ignores that. This is probably one of those situations where it'll just have to be lived with, like LOD tearing along the seams between quads. It can't ever be totally eliminated.

I'm grateful for the patch that you've already produced, so I'm certainly not complaining. That said if you can find some way to fix this it would be great. ;)

Personally, I feel Frostcrag Reborn is a more significant feature in that immediate area than the UL, so I'd give making that "look right" precedence over maintaining everything from the UL. I don't know enough about landscaping to know whether you can somehow make the Frostcrag Reborn landscape there the primary landscape and then just smooth it out into the UL landscape in the surrounding cells.

Been like that in my game long before snowdale - it is a Frostcrag Reborn issue period.

although it was made worse by the use of Optimized distant land - I'd take that out if you are using it.

On a side note, you can't take screenshots with Oblivion's utility if you have AA enabled via Oblivion's graphics settings. If it's just enabled via your graphics card, then no problem, but if you have it enabled in Oblivion, no screenies unless you use fraps. I disable Oblivion's AA and use my graphics card so I have the option if I want...

That screenshot looks like you're not using the patch at all, as that's much more severe than I remember seeing while the patch was being developed.

Optimized Distant Land shouldn't be any worse about it than vanilla Oblivion since the Frostcrag DLC didn't ship with an altered landscape quad.

That, my friend, is the wrong landscape LOD mesh. You are still using the Snowdale Landscape LOD (or vanilla, perhaps), not the patch's. Make sure you've properly installed the patch and archiveinvalidate the the quad if need be.

I took it out and still I have the same problem.

I installed correctly from the start the patch, the only possible problem in my mind was that I installed it with BAIN and I tried to install the patch separately at the the end of the BAIN install order, but the effect was the same.

I have archive invalidation invalidated installed, since I have a pretty big install. Maybe something is not right with my load order, I don't know...

And with BAIN what could I have done wrong since I have made all the installs with it and had no problems with any mods so far. I right clicked the patch and clicked install. At the conflicts tab it showed a conflict with Frostcrag Reborn LOD and lower in the order so it was overwritten.

Pic is from behind because this game iteration (Kinda old pic, I reinstalled the game later on) had some LOD issues for me which caused the cabin beneath the spire to not show up properly, but notice how the towers are NOT floating.

The reason ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated isn't doing the job for you is because it primarily focuses on making texture replacers work. For meshes and sounds, I found that I needed to resort to BSA Alteration to fix those up.

Oh I would love to see Frostcrag like that on my pc also :) . But how can I add the quad in archive invalidation.txt if I use Archive Invalidation Invalidated? I know that the txt file becomes useless with this mod, no?

Well that is not the same angle - I've not had floating towers but the students quarters below have been hanging free like in Dreamer's pic. Can I get a shot from like just outside Bruma's front gate?

Hmm, interesting to know, but how can I resort to BSA Alteration safely while still using archive invalidation invalidated?
