Fruit fly problem

Post » Tue Feb 25, 2014 6:56 pm

Heya CD,

My mum's cousin came down from Sydney last Friday and brought with her dragon-fruit even though my mum said not to. Just yesterday my mum found the fruit flies (maggots?) in the dragonfruit and she told me today. I want to get rid of them now, but I'm not sure of the best way to? Mum is thinking of chucking it all in the oven. Should we call the local council, or is there another way to contain/kill them?

Have any of you ever had a fruit fly problem or something similar?

Used to get fruit flies a lot when I was working as a winemaker, the standard various fly traps tape etc work (a bit of fruit wine in a container with some soap so they'd get stuck worked)

but if they haven't developed into flies yet just burn it or put the fruit in a sealed container and let them die, they'll suffocate or die of old age relatively quickly

Yeah, they haven't developed yet so we'll probably just burn them. Though, since we can't have any fires here, would the oven suffice? :P If not, then I'll just go with the sealed container method. Thanks, though!

Probably, they aren't particularly tough and don't live very long... Apparently they are relatively resilient to radiation though (well compared to us)? So don't try nuking them I guess :P

Can of deodorant + lighter = charred fruit

Making a flame thrower doesn't count as lighting a fire!

*puts away nuke* Damn...but cheers for your help! I appreciate it :D

Deodorant method could pass as a hobby but I'll probably accidentally end up lighting myself on fire. Oops.

i had a fruit fly problem as well. They had already developed into flies so I couldn't really contain the situation. I wanted to get rid of them. Quickly. Bought a can of insecticide and sprayed my whole place. Eventually the air was probably even deadly for humans. I had to stay outside the whole day. None survived though.

I do not take half measures. Luckily I had already used my last nuke on this mole problem I had a month ago. With them fruit flies having this radiation resistance think going on apparently...
