Furnishing a house

Post » Mon Jun 17, 2013 5:33 pm

Ok so I bought a home in The Whiterun Hold. The house look like a run down abandoned shack on the inside, but apparently furnishing can be bought from the Steward. So I went up to see him. (I assume it's the same guy as I bought the house from), but he has no option to buy furniture's for my house.

So how do I make my home look a bit more like a home instead of a warehouse?

did you side with the Stormcloaks?

I have been told doing so can mess up the furnishing Options from the Steward post-battle of whiterun... not sure if its true though...

I'm lvl 11 I haven't sided with anyone yet.

I just battled my first dragon at the outpost. Haven't even visited the greymanes yet. And apart from clearing out a few bandits camps I haven't been north of Whiterun city

interesting... and talking to the Steward does not give any Options?

Its not like buying stuff from a store, you talk to him and tell him the furnishing you wish to buy via dialogue, not a UI like you buy weapons and gear with...

you can pay the steward to do so, doing that takes time though as he will add improvements at a pretty slow rate or you could do it yourself by using the workbench(es) inside the house. doing so will require plenty of material but you can chose what you furniture you want (i for one dont care much for the elk head throphies and such) the steward will just add anything possible. if you build the entry way first and want the hall later, dont tell the steward to furnish the entryway since he will put a bed and fireplace in there.

Breezehome looks like a warehouse even post maximum furnishing.

The dialogue option is something like- "I'd like to decorate my home"

If you bought Breezehome and are having an issue with Avenecci not having dialogue options for furnishing you are experiencing a glitch which will require reloading from a previous save.

You never said Seray what platform you are on. My first playthrough was on 360 and I never had an issue.

On PC however I was running a mod called 'A more useful Breezehome', this mod bugged Breezehome so that I couldn't furnish the bedroom or add the Alchemy table. I however had dialogue option.

My suggestion is to reload froma previous save even if it means replaying the battle and trying again. If this doesn't work you may have to uninstall and reinstall your game to get rid of the glitch.

That reminded me of how hard impossible it is to place items manually to actually decorate your home. It's something devs should have fixed. Screw being nitpicky.

It is easy to manually decorate your home, forget your preconceived notions of how you should be picking something up, or what other game the Skyrim system should be like and just go practice how to use what we have.

What I have is backward-working physics. There also invisible whirlwinds going on when you're not watching. It's not easy ha ha.

Edit: typo.

1) drop the item,

2) leave the house,

3) retenter the house

4) put it where you want it.

not exactly rocket science

What I want to know is how people can afford that house at level 11 after only getting as far as the first dragon. Is there some money-making scheme I'm missing out on?

It's easy, gather potion ingredients, go to the alchemist and ask to use her alchemy lab, make them, sell them. Mine ores all around Whiterun's outer walls, make and sell what you can from them. Do bounty quests and kill bandits, loot them, sell the stuff. AND....last but not least, chop a lot of wood. :D

Buy Breezehome, furnish the bedroom with chest and go make more gold.

Thanks. I usually do the alchemy thing. Used to make most of my money in Oblivion doing that. But it doesn't seem to be enough in Skyrim, not by itself anyway. Will try out those other things next time. :D

I cleared Pinewatch and Embersherd mine as well as Bleak Falls Barrow before going to Whiterun and picked up and sold everything except the ore I mined. There was just enough to buy and furnish it with a few septims left over.

Yeah, I've learned the value of looting every little thing of any value from every single bandit I dispatch. The money really piles up; that's how I always buy Breezehome. By the time my character's named Thane of Whiterun, he's got plenty of money to buy and fully furnish the cozy little place.

Of course that's not counting the couple of thousand septims I used before buying the house for two or three pieces of enchanted equipment. So all in all clearing bandit hideouts is a very lucrative way of gathering coin.

I don't know of any other way than to reload a previous save if he's not giving you the dialog, sorry!

That's what I did; for my current character, I didn't get the dialogue right off and had to reload a previous save.
