Fusion Core Mechanic Necessary?

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2015 6:53 am

Having been roleplaying since the first print run of D&D, I've been feeling the same way ever since RPGs started drifting towards more Action than roleplaying. (Hard to say when that was. Sometime well before Mass Effect was ballyhooed as being a RPG.) But it seems pretty obvious that most gamers that see themselves as RPGers are actually more interested in what they are DOing rather than what their characters are BEing. So the demand for instant gratification really isn't surprising.

Sooo, does everyone think a "Fusion Cores don't deplete" attachment on torso pieces would be balanced then? I'm serious about doing that once the editor's released.

Don't know. For basic unmodified power armor it might not be so bad, but start throwing in things like jetpacks and I think it would be unbalanced.

If the attachment only prevented running (but not sprinting or jumping or jetpacking, etc) from depleting the core it would probably not throw things out of whack too badly.

Oh, I'd have the "Fusion Cores don't deplete" mod fill the same mod slot as the jet pack or Tesla Coils on the torso, so you'd be forced to choose. You could still pimp out the arms, legs, and head, but I think that should be okay.

No different PA from all previous FOs then. How unbalancing was PA in those games?

Oh they run out too fast, oh there are too many. Which is it? Maybe it's just right then. I have a bunch but i sacrificed for 80 hours of gameplay, got all 3 points in physicist and trade most all my loot for fusion cores. It makes PA a bit more valuable but i dont want to worry about paying extensive costs for fuel and am happy to be PA all the time. You do have to get a feel for what the wasteland is like without it to appreciate it or else enemies should just be leveled to make it a challenge or even match. Which at level 50 I can 1 shot glowing deathclaws, might as well have crazy armor.

Early on I just died a lot. Quick save always, you have to get to know where the super mutant with the grenade is and look for him when you reload. Now I just get my legs blown off and have to repair them. I still feel bad about taking a rocket launcher to the face but don't lose the last 45 minutes. Enemies could be stronger but i could turn up the difficulty. Playing on normal now. Early on the t45 and raider variants while pretty good wont have many upgrades though the DR is still pretty good compared from 300DR to 30 DR without it.

The problem with the fusion core mechanic is that it breaks the lore about fusion cores, which states that a single fusion core can last a few hundred years. I think it would of been cool if they had added a fusion core leak mechanic to the game, where most of the fusion cores are damaged and leak radiation, and thus give you radiation damage while you are near or in the power armor and deplete faster/do more damage to you, depending on the leak. Also it would of been cool if all the power armors you see around the wasteland, had a chance to explode, if there is a fusion core inside of it.

i think this would of made people only use power armor in specific situations and hard fights. As it stands now, you could go thee entire game wearing power armor if you wanted. You can't travel around in it, but still.

Power Armor was basically no different from ordinary armor in how you used it, although it required a training perk to be able to equip it. But as ordinary armor, it was pretty much Ultimate Armor - once you got it, there was very little point in ever wearing anything else, regardless of your character build.

On the PA in general. Jet Pack runs off of AP anyways, might as well not burn through the Core because of it
