He's a Redguard. Here's his entry on http://imperial-library.info/content/gaiden-shinji, and on http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Gaiden_Shinji#Gaiden_Shinji.

It is not entirely clear he was a Redguard, is it? The river-people of the Bjoulsae, who appear to be somewhere ethnically between a Reach-Person and a Ra'Ga seem to revere him. And he has a Japanese name, so he could even be Akaviri.

Different people putting different spins on the thing. It isn't all that different from how elves were portrayed between Dragon Age I and II. In the first, they were fantasy-Jews. In the second, they played up their magical connection and unhumanness. You can't exactly make a qualitative statement of "now it svcks" unless there's deliberate white-washing and pandering going on.

Try North African. Which is totally reasonable for people from the Alik'r.

The Redguards have been consistent since Redguard.

*Imagines a future TES game set in Hammerfell, with an arabic culture but sandy ancient Japaneese architecture, not sure what to think of it*

Anyway, anyone else think its quite ironic that he is famous for "The best techniques are taught by the survivors" (which I thought would be common sense anyway, I don't know why it's such a good quote unless Tamriel has a lack of them from historic figures) yet he died in the siege of Orsinium? *shrug*

Like I said, the Japanese element is largely out of the picture. Plus, the architecture has always been Arabic, it was the names/culture that were Japanese back in Daggerfall.

I also always thought of it as a change over time as the Redguards settled and adapted. It could also be an extension of the historic Crown vs. Forebear faction; the Crowns had more Japanese sounding names, while the Forebears had more "Imperialized" names. As for having names in Daggerfall, this list has rather un-Japanese sounding names from both Daggerfall and Redguard.

Culture is definitely bang on though.

IDK maybe different parts of Hammerfell have different cultures.

The Crowns never had Japanese names either (as you can tell by that list). Daggerfall didn't really do much with the Redguards in game, all the lore is from a series of books on their history, which have since been largely overwritten.

I thought the Redguard names in Daggerfall were supposed to be ancient Egyptian? At least that's what Akorithi and Aubk-i bring to mind, and it fits with the general North African atmosphere.

(Also, the thing that gets me about Gaiden Shinji is that he doesn't really live up to his own quote, does he? After all, he wasn't a survivor. <_< )

In fairness, there are allot of ways to do in outright warfare that aren't the fault of the victim.
Its not exactly comparable to one on one combat in an Arena.
