Galactic Civilizations III

Galactic Civilizations III is a Turn-Based Strategy Game by 4X Games. It features Civilization-style gameplay, with the added features of custom factions and custom ships.

In short, anyone here played the full release version yet? If so, how have you liked it? I'm a fan of TBS Games, so once I get the chance and see a few more reviews, I might check it out.

Got it the other day and am really enjoying it. It feels like a proper evolution of GalCiv 2 (nothing I've noticed has really been omitted, with the exception of planetary governors but they're coming in the next patch).

I would say that it's not really the same as Civ 5. You actually have to place buildings on tiles on the planet (and each only has so many to build on) and their placement, as well as adjacent buildings, provide bonuses. There are also a lot more numbers to watchout for if you really want to be efficient. They also broke-up the tech tree to be more like Sins of a Solar Empire (you kinda have to focus on how you want to win, not just idly grab techs on a linear tree).

Of course, if you already know about the mechanics what I just said was pointless :P

Is it good? I like it more than the last one, and it's a close rival of Civ 5 (not a fan of the micro GalCiv has, nothing major). It still isn't enough to pull me from EU4, though

Waiting for the price to come down. After all tired of paying full price for games when they don't live up to their potential. I guess buying Stardocks other games, Fallen Enchantress, I am more leary of buying a game and waiting for it to be patched to be good.

I did buy Stardrive 2. Now that is almost like playing Masters of Orion II.

I still love playing Galactic Civs 2, so I'm looking to pick 3 up over the summer sometime.

Ouch. Ya that was certainly not their best game. I heard it got much better with the '2.0' update or whatever, but I just couldn't go through it again.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Reading that you are liking Gal Civ III, is giving me hope. I will wait a bit more, after all playing Witcher 3 right now, and have Warlock 2 and Stardrive 2 to play. Once these games are done and Fallout 4 hasn't come out yet, then I might get Gal Civ III.

I just wish combat was better and we had more control over it. That is the big thing stopping me from picking it up right now.

Don't judge Gal Civ 3 by Stardock's fantasy titles. Gal Civ is their flagship series going way back, and Gal Civ 2 was a good game. The new version should improve on it. Their fantasy based games are a fairly recent experiment and they haven't quite gotten those right yet. I'm planning on getting Gal Civ 3 at some point as well, I've just been waiting for the final release.

I am waiting for a sale. While I liked Gal Civ II, I bought the first two expansion packs, didn't get the third one since I never played it a lot. So I will wait and bid my time. It doesn't look like a must have. Looks like fun, and can spend hours making a ship, but not being able to control that ship in combat just seems like a bit of waste of time making the ship that you can't control and use.
