Gambling and Mini-games

Post » Thu Jul 15, 2010 4:59 am

I know that a few topics touching on this area have come up before but would people like to see anything like this making an appearance in Skyrim? And if so, in what form??

There's woodcutting, cooking, mining, farming, leather working, lute playing.

I was thinking a card game maybe (like the one in FF8) or a dice based game..... maybe even shady characters in back alleys with the classic pea under a cup gambling??

Yeah but neither of those are mini-games. I think Todd said that.

OT: Some form of game to play in taverns would be nice.

Nine Men's Morris.

Games would be fun, and might serve as the occasional distraction or reason to visit a tavern. I'm not really that interested in the gambling part, though.

Lute playing would have to be a minigame.

How about gambling in an arena? I mean, that was kinda entertaining...kinda. Anyway, I'd like to see swordsman tournaments, they don't need to be official ones. Archery tournements too, and magic duels. Not all these should be to the death either.

Can I bet on myself? I've always wanted to do that. Pay some kid to put all the gold I got on myself, and promiss 10%.

I'd also like to see some unique games that only exist in TES, and we've never seen before on earth.

What do people find in this concept of game inside a game attractive? I have no issue with tourneys, those are make sense, but mini-games? For regular actions? I already hated the whole lock picking game in OB, and I felt disappointed knowing that that one would be returning, so no thank you, one is already too much

No it would not. I don't see how you can draw that conclusion.

@Zetro

Because, TES games are almost like living a "real" life in fiction. Gambling goes hand in hand with drinking and taverns. People would invent games to entertain themselves and help pass time. And I never said mini-games for regular actions.....

Or bet against yourself and take a dive? If only losing in the arena didn't mean death...

...but Todd said, (Norway mag, Lockpicking) "We have to turn it into some sort of mini-game, which I hate." (Something like that.)

I don't like mini-games myself. (In TES.)

Gambling to fit the theme would be nice. I wouldn't like to see Poker and Blackjack, of course, but there must be some other games. They made Caravan for New Vegas, so I'm sure the minds at Bethesda could make their own game up. As always, betting on fights is interesting. It's just that with the removal of the Luck attribute, I don't see how any of this could work.

how about a game similar to darts but with knives?

and while we're at it, paying a round of ale to the patrons and having a good time listening to the drunken chorus.

NO!

Let me tell you why!

THIS WOULD RUIN THE GAME

That is why.

Seriously why would anyone want to gamble or play cards in skyrim. Why would anyone ever want to do that, when you can do it somewhere else. It doesn't add to the game, it takes away from it.

...I'm kinda interested in how some card or dice games would take away from anything. Its just another time sink to waste some gold. I mean, Skyrim will be so big and have so many things. I fail to see how a game at a bar could hurt it in any way.

Leather working and Lute playing? Really?

At any rate, they can add gambling I guess, thats pretty harmless, but we have plenty of minigames.

I just wish we would leave that to games which it would actually make sense to put in. Like fallout NV, appropriate, but a LAME way to get a lot of money. Not fun.

Let me go with the wise words once posted by a member of this forum

"If i want to go play card games, i will do so online, with my friends, in Fallout". Frankly i would take that a step further, and say that i would go to ANY OTHER source before i would play it in Skyrim.

IMO, it does not fit right. But please, don't let that rain on your parade (No sarcasim intended). Honestly i would welcome it, IF there were a way to remove it from the game.

That way, everyone who wants to do that, can. But honestly just makes me sick thinking about it.

Cards could be cool, but I think something like dice would fit better. I like it as long as it makes sense in the setting and isn't overly complex, it's a fun way to make a little money and it makes the world seem a little more full. I mean people have been playing games to pass the time for centuries, they don't just sit and drink when they go to a bar they play pool or cards or dice(slots nowa days). Besides it worked in the Witcher I love that dice game.
