Gambling?

Post » Fri Sep 03, 2010 4:22 am

One of my favorite parts of New Vegas was playing blackjack in the casino's. I would love to see some kind of gambling games in Skyrim. It would add to the atmosphere, culture, and of course gameplay. Would you guys like to see some kind of gambling games? They don't have to be as obvious or such a big thing as they were in NV, but at least there.

EDIT: These don't have to be games like Blackjack or Roullete, or Slots or something. They could be drinking games, dice games, or a game only played in one small town tavern. That's what I mean by gambling in general.

It'd be nice, but not to the extent of professional-Vegas style gambling we found in New vegas, but rather a smaller, more-for-fun tavern kind of gambling you do while drunk (i.e. smaller scale). Anything bigger would just look extremely out of place in my opinion (well, maybe a Bosmer gambling addict gone broke would be funny to see, but... meh)

Other: games like blackjack and poker seem out of place to me, but original games (like caravan in NV) would be cool. I don't know any dice games but i imagine they would fit in nicely. Also, in another thread someone mentioned making pubs feel more alive by having games like chess and draughts - I like that idea and being able to put a bit of money on the game would be fun too :)

I agree entirely. That's what I mean by it doesn't need to be as obvious as in NV. :)

I agree. Make it more TES and less Fallout. If they can't figure out how to do that, just keep it out.

Gambling should defintely be in. Just imagine going into a mead hall and some nords want to challenge you to an armwrestle. It would make the game more believable. So yeah it should defintely be in. :foodndrink:

How would that work? The only way I can think would be button bashing really fast or something until they folded (admittedly, I'm not very imaginative :P), which would be quite boring to actually play.

I would imagine it would be more like a card game. A nord would just try to smash your face in, not "arm wrestle" you.

Edit: That sounded kinda weird. I guess I just don't think a nord would participate in games like that. He would lose, get pissed and kill you :D

Exactly. If it's fun little games wouldn't it be great?

The only other way (since I hate button mashing) is if its based on stats. If you have higher strength than him, and mediocre or greater luck, you win. You can still win if you have much less strength, but really high luck, possibly. Not sure armwrestling would work. :P But they could make some other fun games.

no. I see two results. gambling games like black jack and rulette (which don't belong in a fantasy rpg imo) and a fable esque minigames. but I wont think badly if they include gamboling any ways, I am for more options. as long as it prevents them from adding more armor and weapons.

I don't see why not? I think it would add a really cool new aspect to the game.

they have a set date for release. how much they put into the game depends on how much they can put into it with that time. if they work on things like gamboling before they finish with other content such as armor or weapons it steals from the amount of total time they can spend working on how much more they can put into the game. they should save the frivoulous stuff, like gambling, for last.

 Oh my god. Have you ever developed a game at all, or are you just trying to sound like you know exactly what your talking about?

First: They will finish the game long before release. (Possibly even a few months) They have to. This gives time for testing and making it less buggy. They don't work on it, adding content, armor, weapons, etc until the day of release. That would be a disaster.

Second: Different people would be making these games as those who add armor. To add armor you need a concept artist, a modeller/texturer, and a product designer to place it ingame and balance it. To add minigames you would need perhaps a concept artist (to draw out the game cards, etc) but they have more than one of those, then mainly a programmer to code in the minigame. Adding them would not disrupt their adding items and armor. Plus, I bet by this stage they have added pretty much all the items and armor, and are in the stage where they add all the, how did you put it, frivoulous stuff, to the game.

Pretty much looking at it like that, either armor or minigames, is a poor way to go about doing so... :/

I actually liked the card game from fable, I still play it from time to time in the 360 arcade. :P

In Oblivion, betting at the arena was a form of gambling so I'm pretty sure than can extend that idea into other games.

Completely support this idea. Maybe even chicken fights  ? I think it would be cool if you could cheat in a game of poker or arm wrestling, but if the other guy catches you cheating he tries to kill you like in RDR.

How would you cheat in an arm wrestling game (without others seeing it)?

Open up your inventory and drink a strength potion? Hope it's not that way in Skyrim anymore.

I voted yes, but not for just any random game like we have in the real world, because that would ruin some of the immersion of being in Skyrim.

The gambling games found in Skyrim should be period games, authentic Nord gambling games if possible or if any exist, or something designed new to reflect the lore and period of that time.

The problem I have with Bethesda building such games is that they are already working on ONE game: SKYRIM. The amount of time and energy it would take to build these "games within a game" would be counterproductive. So here is my proposed solution:

Bethesda should announce a "Gambling Game" Contest. Applicants would try to invent the coolest idea for a gambling game that would fit well into the TES Lore and or Nordic Lore themes and yet who's rules would provide epic fun and stimulation. The applicant whose idea was approved for use by Bethesda would get 2-3 copies of the DVD Collector's version of SKYRIM a few days prior to its release. (To know that were the first to have the game 2 days before it released and could share that joy with your best mates would be awesome!)

Then once the winning submission is announced, Bethesda would select 10 known Modders who they feel did the best Mod work for Oblivion of all time, and send letters requesting they come to their studio and begin work on Modding that gambling game for Skyrim. They would design the graphics, models, textures, sounds, story aspects of the gambling situation, such as:

1) If you won, what happens? What is your reward? Are they PC-centric rewards or generic rewards?
2) If you lose, what happens? What are the penalties if you can't pay? Is there a Mafia underworld aspect to this gambling game?
3) Who plays it? Kings? Princes? Beggars? Lowly? The Middle Class? Criminals? Law-abiding citizens?
4) Where is it played? Indoors around tables in a civilized manner? Or in a special hut around a fire? OR is is played outdoors, on the street? In a special garden? In a stadium? In booths?
5) Why do they play it? Cultural ties, historical relevance? Because it improves their intelligence in matters of war? (always a significant use for a game...) Or because it improves their viciousness in combat?
6) Can it somehow add to the Skyrim mood and atmosphere, or help explain fear of dragons, or help us to understand Skyrim politics?

They have to work it all out as a team (the Modders who are brought in.) They get 6 months to finish the full expression of their idea, so Bethesda can test (and fix) it for the remaining 3 months until release.

Once that Mod is complete, and all the bugs worked out, then it's retro-fitted back into the Skyrim main .ESM file and is now a part of the Skryim world upon its release. That team is paid a bonus, or perhaps they are all given brand new top of the line gaming rigs as their severance pay, and the knowledge their Mod is already embedded forever within Skyrim upon release. This kind of Developer-to-Regular Joe interaction would become legendary, no one would ever forget that a developer thought to do something like this. Include the very people who play their games, love their games, and MOD their games, back into building their games? Awesome!

They would have no rival. And what a precident it would set! hahaaha
