Game Controling PipBoy

Post » Sun Nov 14, 2010 6:41 pm

I have just been reading the Dev Diaries about Fallout 3 and they said when they were tossing up the ideas for the survival edition of the game they thought of making a Pipboy that you wore in IRL and you used it in the game. I would love to see that happen in New Vegas. You can buy a PipBoy and plug it into your system (or use wireless), probably computer, and so you don't have to open up your PipBoy you just have to look at your wrist to choose weapons and maps

What do you guys think?

Sounds all right but has some problems:

Would make using the Keyboard for movement and hotkeys a total pain in the ass.
For those of us with less than perfect vision, the text would have to be pretty big or we'd spend the majority of our time squinting at our wrists.
I think it would probably get a little ripe and yeasty after a couple of hours, ever took a sniff of the back of your watch?

It wouldn't work nor would I enjoy making playing a pain in the ass... Unless you use the pipbpy like a controller and just look at your tv and the screen on the pipboy would just display the date and time. and opening your pipboy pauses game and looking at your wrist and changing would be harder and it would be kinda a waste of money if it was just for selections

Maybe not controlling it per se, but some kind of bonus iPhone app that could access the menu or whatever with some kind of bluetooth connectivity would be pretty cool.

Sort of like how the DS and Wii can communicate with certain games.

Sadly the iphone Bluetooth is crippled to only work with other iphone.....BACK ON TOPIC <_<
I ment like the red buttons changed the screen to whatever and the nub sellected the options and of cause it would have to be touchscreen. But it would be perminatly displaying your stats or inventory and you could touch it at any point. Would make the game more relismtic if the game didn't pause but would still give you the option to.

I don't think it would make movement harder, you'd still use all you keyboard and stuff just the Pipboy menus are ruited to the Pipboy.......COULD possible be done in a mod....like the Pipboy screen is sent to a second monitor. Then the modie could build his own Pipboy if he/she wanted

I would use that for my 360, if the option was availible. And it would be cool to have a real life Pip-Boy, so it is a win-win.

I don't think that'd work to well... Maybe a Pip-Boy that plays Fallout 1... which would still be a pain in the ass.

Could a mod split the PipBoy menu off the main screen to a secon screen or is that to deep in the game?
If that is possible all someone, most likely me, would have to do is make a game controller that links into the game and then a IRL model of the PipBoy. Would love to try

its a creative idea but i just think it would fall short and youll end up losing all the fun out of it...maybe a pip boy looking ps3 conroller that just looked like a pip boy but had all the ps3 buttons :goodjob:

It's not as easy as just "splitting" it away from the screen, which would be rather hard to do by itself. First, it would be hard because essentially what the pipboy in your hand would be is, a massive, complicated hotkey. Because unless you make it so the pipboy only comes up when you press a button on your wrist for it to come up, it will always be down... so therefore, idk how the game will be able to compute things such as adding mods to a weapon and stuff like that unless you actually go in to pip boy mode. I just think at this point, its outside of the realm of possibilities, and it just is not going to happen...

I think the most they will be able to do is make it so it displays your stats on your RL Pip-Boy (hydration, sleep, food, limbs, rads, and health) which could actually be pretty useful in HC mode. But looking down at your pip-boy would break the immersed state your in at the time. Which is partially what HC mode is about... so all in all... its a big, fat, no.

fair enough, well thats a bit sad but i understand. :brokencomputer:
So if you pressed TAB then it would start the PipBoy but it would involve LOTS of stuff, yes?
But its probably not worth the poblams

Right, its just alot of work that is not really worth the outcome.

There would be quite a lot of random pausing unless you had to turn it on everytime you waned to use it.. :brokencomputer: (if it was fully functional)

Plus this adds a huge geek factor. *Girl comes into your room* "What's that wrist thing?" "IT'S MY PERSONAL PIP-BOY FOR FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS." "kthxbye"

It's a fun idea but I think there would be a million problems to overcome. I don't think it would be practical.

It would be cool to have a wearable one as a collectable, but not one to play the game, it would be to annoying.

Funny. I was just working on the design for a I-Phone holder that looks Identical to a PIPBOY. Patent pending.

You don't even know the half of it, buddy. Not only has the phone I'm using as a model crashed, but I can't get the PIPboy's buttons to do anything but look pretty.

Something I would love to have for the in game Pipboy would be the ability to move things around in the list's .......like notes, so I could keep together all note's for a specific quest or mod.
