Game crash/freeze problem!

Post » Tue Apr 19, 2011 8:43 am

Hello everyone! My name is Ben, and I, like most pc gamers, am having problems running Fallout 3 on windows 7! I have called Betheasda support dozens of times and i get no where with them! I have downloaded the latest patch and it has only helped me get past the birth part! But now when ever i try to open the freaking door to get the heck out of the valt and into the wastland, it Crash/freeze's on me! I have done everything from changing the compadibillity mode to changing the graphics! not to say that i have a KICK BUTT PC that can play anything from Halo 1 to Crysis warhead at maxed out settings! With that said it is not a PC problem or a windows problem, it is a Beathesda problem! I have talked to lots of people friends and support lines that have agreed with me! If only Beatheada could fix there crapy bugy and glichy game like fallout 3 with a patch or something, I think these forums would be a litttle nicer to read! If anyone has any ideas since Betheada obviously doesn't of how to fix the crap in the game i would love to hear it, and if you betheada even care at this point i would love to hear something diffrent than ''its a windows 7 problem''! Thanks everyone!

Hey friend,
i think i can help you through this.
First: its not win7 causing troubles with freezing.
The Game just cant handle more than 2 CPU-cores properly. to solve this Problem:

Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3

Find the line:

bUseThreadedAI=0

change it to:

bUseThreadedAI=1

Add another line after it and insert:

iNumHWThreads=2

This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.

Hopefully this helps someone else out there!

It's been a week, so you've probably tried the .ini core-throttling, which should work for yours as well, since it's merely allowing 2 cores to be recognized. I must say though, I haven't used this for my new machine with an i7, and it's running absolutely beautifully.

Now that I've jinxed myself, I'm sure I'll be crying here shortly. hehehe.

EDIT: I did indeed have to perform the .ini alteration, and the game has played rock-solid for many hours now.
