Game crashes, Is it because of too many mods?

Post » Tue Jul 16, 2013 10:02 am

Hi fellow Dragonborns.

So I started playing skyrim again some time ago after I watched few LP's on Youtube. And it made me jump back into the game again. And as far as I'm concerned I cannot play skyrim without immersion mods and mods that makes the game feel realistic. However, I heard of the report about the game crashing after using 4 gb of installed mods. However I wonder if it is specific to RAM or the actual disk space of the mods.

And is there a way to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

It's RAM-specific. Skyrim is a 32-bit application, which means the most it can theoretically use is approximately 4 GB of RAM. In reality, it seems to have trouble when it's using a little bit more than 3 GB of RAM, especially if you're using a 32-bit OS (which has the same RAM limitation). The file size on the disk is meaningless here, since the game has to fetch data from the disk and load it into RAM to work.

There is no "fix."

It's RAM that is the issue and there's no way to fix it. See the http://forum.step-project.com/showthread.php?tid=1929 thread on STEP for more details. So it's a good idea to not overload the game with HD texture replacers etc. (easier said than done - I'd rather live with the crashes...).

I don't think the game loads the replacer files in that manner. I do recall a discussion at one point that suggested that plugin files were loaded in their entirety at run-time, which chips away at the available amount, but I'm not sure if that was ever confirmed or not.

All at once and mirrored in RAM instead of VRAM alone.

If you're on a 32-bit OS, it's because the system cannot make use of the memory required to use them and it goes boom.

It's actually a 64-bit OS. I am entirely clueless on what is going on. I unchecked the high ress texture pack and it still happens.

Are those numbers backwards?

Something else that should be pointed out is that the game can only load a maximum of 255 plug-ins, including the plug-in files for the game and the DLCs.

sorry my VRAM is 2gb

edit: So I tried to run Skyrim with Skyrim Performance monitor and actually I'm no where near the 3.1gb. The max amount it came up to at the point of crashing is 1.5gb. So It must be some mod that is not cooperating well with the game or another mod.

More system RAM will certainly help you run more mods. Windows 64-bit can use the extra to load services and processes that it needs, and free up more RAM for Skyrim to use.

Are your crashes happening on game start-up, or are they random as you play? If they're occurring on start-up, that usually indicates a missing or late-loading master file.

You're probably going to have to deal with the fun task of identifying the one that's giving you trouble. If you post your load order, we may be able to help.

Did you sort your load order with https://code.google.com/p/better-oblivion-sorting-software/downloads/list? Unofficial Dragonborn Patch should be loading much higher than that - it should be up with the rest of your unofficial patches.

I changed it back but I accidently chnaged it to the last before. So It's not the problem with Unofficial Dragonborn Patch. It's something else.

They may be unrecognized by BOSS - BOSS sorts unrecognized ones at the bottom of your load order by default, and you have to manually place them by either dragging and dropping in your mod manager, or by creating BOSS user rules. If they are unrecognized (check the BOSS log), review the readmes and see if the mod author gives any load order tips.

I don't use Skyrim Redone or the Reproccer, but in most of the load orders I've seen that include them, the reproccer patches load at or near the bottom of the list. Again, I don't use these, so take that for what it's worth.

Civilizations - Sounds of Skyrim was reported to cause a lot of problems with save game bloat and corruption. The mod author acknowledged the problem and released an update in May that was supposed to fix this. If your version is 1.0, you need to update to 1.02. He also released a compatibility patch for Climates of Tamriel at about the same time.
