[Help] Game crashes directly on startup through FOSE

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:28 am

Okay, so I need help properly installing FOSE.

I have copied all the .dll-files and the "fose_loader.exe"-file to my Fallout 3-directory which is located at "C:\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3". But when I try to launch the game using fose_loader.exe or launching the game through FOMM, it just crashes immediately at the "Please Stand By"-screen and i get an error from Windows saying "Fallout 3 has stopped working" basically.

So, what should I do?

Cheers

When you launch from "Fallout3.exe" it does load correctly?

Crashes are usually related to the mods you have installed, not caused by FOSE. Launching without FOSE should tell you if a mod is responsible, though FOSE won't function, of course.

A missing master file, or a messed up INI file can both cause the game to crash before getting to the main menu.

The game launches correctly from Fallout3.exe, yes.
Actually, I'm in the process of trying to get FWE to work and in the description on Fallout 3 Nexus it said this:

"Ensure that FOMM and FOSE (Fallout Script Extender) are up-to-date and properly installed."

So yeah, I'm basically trying to ensure that FOSE is properly installed. But quite obviously there's something wrong since the game crashes when I'm launching it with FOSE.

Should I maybe try to reinstall the whole thing?

Thing is that if the process gets as far as the game running, then the problem isn't FOSE. At that point FOSE has done it's work. A FOSE issue would result in the game never launching at all.

So, it's either a game issue or a mod issue.

Does it still crash when loading only the Fallout3.esm and no other mods of any kind?

Oh, okay, makes sence.

I disabled all the mods and loaded only the Fallout3.esm, and yes it crashed.

Okay, now that is weird. I've never heard of FOSE or OBSE making the game unstable like that before.

If it's loading the game, that means you have a compatible version and the launcher is working correctly. And if you are only loading Fallout3.esm, then that means that no scripts are running FOSE functions.

Unless someone else has an idea I'd have to go with the clean install idea.

Allright, I'll wait some days for someone else to reply and then consider reinstalling everything.

I have another question tho, is FOSE supposed to appear in my list of mods in FOMM?

Not FOSE itself, no. Only mods with an ESP or ESM will appear in that list.

FOSE is a utility, not a mod and only injects some new records into the Fallout3.exe during startup.

Okay, I've chosen to reinstall the whole damn thing all over again today instead. I have uninstalled Fallout 3, all the game add-ons (The Pitt, Broken Steel, Zeta and so on), FWE, FOSE and FOOM.
So lets begin again, I'm doing all this in chronological order btw. So the order that I type here, is the order I've done it all in.

I've installed Fallout 3, patched it to 1.7 using "Fallout3_1.7_English_UK.exe", all the add-on packs without any errors whatsoever. I've also installed FOOM, and turned off everything except for Fallout3.esm.

Okay, I've tried several times to launch the game using fose_loader.exe and to me it seems like it's just crashing randomly. Sometimes it works, and I get to the main menus or it crashes right at the beginning.

How do I know if FOSE is properly installed or not?

Proper install for FOSE consists of only two things: fose_loader.exe and the fose_1_7.dll being in the folder with the Fallout3.exe.

That's the entire basic install (fose_editor_1_5.dll being there if you use the GECK).

After running with FOSE you should have some log files generated. "Fose.log" and "fose_loader.log". If there are any errors, they'll be in there.

It sounds like you just have some game instability. Have you made sure your video and sound drivers are up to date? Confirmed you have no DirectX errors?

You could also try GZero's GBoost program to turn off unnecessary programs and services...that might help stability.

"Fose.log" tells me this:

"FOSE: initialize (version = 1.2.2 01070030)
fallout root = C:\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\
plugin directory = C:\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\Data\FOSE\Plugins\
patched
FOSE: deinitialize"

and "fose_loader.log" tells me:

"launching: Fallout3.exe (C:\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\Fallout3.exe)
crc = FE5B82AE
hook call addr = 00C05F61
load lib addr = 00D9B0F0
dll = C:\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\fose_1_7.dll
remote memory = 00150000
old winmain = 006EE300
launching"

Video and sound-drivers are updated and I've got DirectX 11 running. I have tried several times now, while GBoosting, to launch the game through fose_loader.exe and everytime it has worked flawlessly.

So yeah, I'm gonna roll with this and try to get FWE up and running aswell. I'll check back here if there's anymore issues.

Thanks for the help, showler.

By the way, anyone know where I can find a mod called "Fallin3 SouthEast Wasteland.esp"?

Sorry for double-posting.

In case your problem isn't solved already, you can try deleting your .ini file. This sound like a classic previous .ini problem :P

Problem solved, though thanks anyway.

Actually, while I'm at it, I need help finding some .esps

"PreWar Book Titles and Perks.esp"

"WastelandHomes.esp"

"FO3 Wanderers Edition - Optional Worn Weapons.esp" <- Should this have been included when i installed FWE? Cuz I didn't get it.

"WeaponModKits - FWE Optional Worn Weapons.esp" <- Also, I have downloaded and installed the compability patch from FOIP but I didn't get this one there.

Anyone?

Awesome! Thank you so much for your help, showler.

So, only "WastelandHomes.esp" left, then I'm good to go. Actually I might wait with that one 'til later if no one knows where it is/if its changed name/whatever.

If I wanna add esp-files later, I just deactivate my Merged, delete it, install the mod I want and then create a new Merged... Right?

Yes, though using FO3MasterRestore before removing your merged patch and then FO3MasterUpdate after creating the new one is recommended.

Those are both functions of FO3Edit. More details here if you need them: http://modsreloaded.com/how-to-reduce-crashing-using-fo3edit-t2473.html

Allright, so I've just finished downloading and installing all the mods I want. I tried to start the game by going to FOMM - File - Run fose, but it crashed at startup. It takes me to the Bethesda-screen and then it crashes.
I also tried running it with Gboost, same situation, crashed.

I'm trying the MasterUpdate/Restore at the moment. So I have deactivated and deleted my previous Merged patch.esp and I'm now setting up a new one. No errors are showing in the right panel, it says "Background Loader: finished". Created the merged patch, put it last in the load order in FOMM, ticked it, closed FOMM. Ran FO3MasterUpdate, everything went smoothly.

Trying to start the game by going FOMM - File - Run fose - crashed. Trying the same thing with Gboost running - crashed.

CRAFT - Activation Perk.esp; you shouldn't have this anymore, it's integrated into FWE now.

Mart's Mutant Mod - Project Beauty.esp
Mart's Mutant Mod - Increased Spawns.esp
Mart's Mutant Mod - Hunting & Looting.esp
Mart's Mutant Mod - Tougher Traders.esp
Mart's Mutant Mod - Natural Selection.esp
Mart's Mutant Mod - Zones Respawn.esp
Mart's Mutant Mod - No Wanamingos.esp
Mart's Mutant Mod - Increased Increased Spawns.esp; you shouldn't have any of these. The PB one is redundant, and the others are all merged into the MMM-FWE patch.

Hit the update option in FOMM (Help -> Check for updates) and then the Auto-sort option on the right side. Then hit the Load Order Report and check for error messages.

Don't forget to make a new merge patch afterward.

Allright, I found this in the load order report

"Auto Aim Fix v1.1.esp
DO not use with latest FWE, it is already integrated." So I should delete this one aswell right?

That's the only one important one I found all the others either showed
No messages,

"* The auto-sorter doesn't recognize this mod. It is probably safe to put it anywhere, depending on how you want the various plugins to override one another"

or "Do not use with latest FOOK2, it is already integrated."

Also, I ran FO3MasterRestore, then deactivated and deleted my merged patch, made a new one and ran FO3MasterUpdate. No errors whatsoever.

Tried launching via FOMM, Run Fose and it crashed. Also tried with Gboost but crashed there aswell.

I can't see any obvious missing masters, and either FOMM or FO3Edit should report them if there was one.

Try renaming your Fallout.ini (the one in the My Documents/My Games/Fallout3 folder) to Fallout.bak and then run FalloutLauncher.exe to generate a new one. That should tell us if you have an INI error causing it.

I doubt it could cause your crashing, but you should remove these as they're not compatible with FWE:

RaiderMercenaryExpanded.esp
RaiderExpanded[M&W].esp
MercenaryExpanded[M&W].esp
RaiderMercenaryExpanded[M&W].esp

Deactivated+deleted the .esps ghoulsrpeople2 said were incompatible with FWE, deactivated+deleted Merged.esp, restored, made a new one, updated it and ticked it in FOMM.

Renamed the Fallout.INI to Fallout.bak, launched with Fallout_Launcher.exe, pressed Play - game crashed at same time as before. Does that mean it's an error in the INI-file?

Should I delete the .bak-file?

No, if it's still crashing with the newly generated INI file then it's almost certainly not an INI error.

I think you're down to the hard part now. Deactivate all your mods but the official DLCs, DarnifiedUI and the FWE ones. Rebuild your merged patch and test.

Then add in the MMM files and MMM-FWE compatibility patches. Rebuild and test.

Then add WMK, rebuild and test. Add Project Beauty, rebuild and test.

After that start adding the smaller mods in bunches, rebuild and test until you track down what is causing the issue.
