I can play Fallout 4 just fine for a while and then after about 5 or 10 minutes of playing the game will crash to the desktop. It seems completely random, I can't associate it with any actions I am taking. The game plays well and is nice and smooth at over 60 FPS running at 1980x1080 ultra auto-detected settings and no other issues right up until it inevitably crashes to the desktop. There are no error messages or logs that I can find. It has been doing this consistently since the game launched early yesterday morning.

I have a brand new PC that exceeds the recommended system requirements: Intel i5 6600K @ 4.4 GHz, 16 GB memory, 1 TB SSD, Sapphire NITRO Radeon R9 390 8GB, Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3P motherboard, and Windows 10 Home 64 bit. All of the drivers are up to date, including the AMD Catalyst beta 15.11 display driver. None of the hardware is running hot and I have plenty of other games that run fine on this PC (verified by stability testing). I had previously opted in for the 1.1.30 beta on Steam, which I understand has already been integrated into the main branch. I have tried numerous variations on the display settings including the windowed and borderless options.

Are there any command line options that can be used when launching the EXE for the game that may help? Maybe something that forces OpenGL or a different version of DirectX?

Is there any way to enable some error reporting or logging? I tried looking in the event viewer, but was unable to find anything that relates to Steam or Fallout 4 at all, but I may not be looking in the correct place.

I'm having the same issue. I have Windows 10 64-bit, 3770k, Gigabyte UD5H motherboard, GTX970 sli, 16GB of ram. I was able to play up to level 12 or so no problems but now am starting to crash every 5 to 10 minutes. It just goes straight to desktop, no error, no crash logs that I can find..nothing. Very hard to diagnosis, can't easily repeat what's going on. Sometimes I'm just standing around doing nothing and sometimes I'm in combat.

Yeah, the lack of error messages or logs is what is making this so frustrating for me. I have even had my game CTD after hitting ESC to sit on the pause menu screen, I went to grab a snack and came back to a windows desktop and no game running.

Ordinarily the main culprit of a delayed crash in my experience is some form of memory leak, but I have monitored the memory usage and it looks like the memory is holding steady. I also think that the OS would give an error message if the game crashed due to running out of memory.

I can advance my game by saving every minute or so, but it really svcks to constantly need to reload from the desktop.

Same here. I was crashing both pre and post patch. I've tried using the latest nVidea driver, the previous 358 driver as well as the last 355 driver. I've tried SLI enabled and disabled, as well as a lot of the other suggestions on the web. The most frustrating thing is there is no consistency to the crashes, one day one I was averaging 20 minutes of play, last night I played two sessions, each over an hour, today I can't even hit 10 minutes.

Has anyone noticed any common threads to their CTDs? Mine always seem to occur while I am in some form of menu. The workshop menu is the most often culprit, while I am running around with that menu open playing "Sim Post-Apocolyptic Settelment", but I had it once while opening my (tab) inventory as well.

Mine will lock up for a few seconds, then dump me to the desktop with a 'Nvidia driver has recovered' error down in the bottom right (Windows 10).

I think most people in this thread, myself included, are crashing with no error messages at all. If your nVidia driver is throwing an error, then you're way ahead of me. I have no clue what is causing my crashes, just that they happen consistently after I've been playing at least 5 to 10 minutes, and sometimes longer.

I did not start having this issue until after the small patch they did. I was able to play the game perfectly all Tuesday. Come yesterday morning. I crash every 5-10 mins with no error message.

Seems like disabling SLI is working for me now. I just played an hour and a half without crashing. Odd thing is that when I disabled SLI previously the crashing would still take place and I'd eventually get single digit fps @1440p.

I'm having the exact same problem. I've tried clean installs of four different drivers, windowed mode, compatibility mode, disabling streamer service, etc. Nothing has helped. What I don't understand is that I got a solid 14 hours of game play on the 9th and 10th before I started having any problems. I'm pretty sure the problems coincided with the 1.1.30 beta patch going out, but that was supposed to fix freezing, so why would it suddenly start mine freezing? I've hit a wall for what to try next. I've spent at least 6 hours trying various things with no success. Any ideas?

Well you did better than me, I have had this problem since 12:01 am on Tuesday morning. I have not been able to play for more than 30 minutes without a crash, both before and after the beta patch, so the beta had no effect on my game. If anything I am crashing after a little more time now than before. Early on it would crash within a few minutes, but now I usually get at least 15 minutes before crashes, but it is not consistent - I had a crash after only 2 minutes earlier today. The game runs brilliantly every time prior to the crashes, it is always smooth with no glitches and the picture looks nice at 60+ FPS, but the crashes happen every time and I have yet to get any type of error message from the game or the OS.

Same here, except I've been crashing from 3-10 minutes. Definitely haven't made it anywhere near 30 minutes. No error messages, but amazing performance up until it freezes at random. Very frustrating. I've got a ticket with support, but I guess we will just have to wait and see if that pans out. I suspect we will just have to wait for another patch.

I had submitted my ticket on Tuesday and only got an automated response with a bunch of links to things that were of no help. Then today I got another email asking me to take a customer service survey to rate my experience. I filled that out and explained that my issue was NOT resolved and my CS experience was poor with only getting an automated response and nothing more. I also tried to reply to the initial automated response email to explain that my issue is not resolved. I could not find any way on the website to check on the status of my ticket.

same problem here. but most of the time I don't get more then 1 minute. I've done everything. even a fresh windows install.

what I really don't get is I've looked over so many reports from people and there is no common denominator. its both amd and intell CPU/GPU's have the problem. i even though it was just a windows 10 thing for a bit. but that doesn't seem to be it either.

I think its just [censored] that Bethseda is just sitting back not saying anything (at least from what I've seen) and their tickets are a joke. I've sent 4 tickets with nothing more than links to the forums as a response.

I just want a response from these guys. anything would be nice at this point.

Same issue - I've been trying to tackle this since yesterday about 7pm CST.

I played beautifully for about 30 hours. Game was stable - on for almost 15 hours at a whack, lots of alt-tabbing...rock solid. Playing on Ultra settings, no modification.

Then the computer just *snap* shuts off. Wierd...reboot, nothing at all on the event log. Play again. 5-10 minutes...same thing. And again for about 4 hours. My machine reboots in about 3-5 seconds, so not too horrible, but it just kept up.

Things I've tried:

- Rolling back nVidia drivers (incrementally until June)

- System restores going back 2 weeks (6 restore points)

- Removed and fiddled with a lot of mobo settings.

- Ran diagnostics, computer went 15 minutes at 100% load/4500fps...topped out at 38.6C (watercooling)

- Tested "Take on Mars", the only other graphically intense game I have right now...worked fine and stable

- Moved my install to different drives on the computer

- Changed permissions on saves and game folders to be completely open

- Ran in Win7 and Win8 compatibility mode

- Rolled back and removed some recent Windows updates.

- Ran in administrator mode

- Rolled back audio drivers (1 rollback)

- Deleted all previous saves and the game, reinstalled from Steam

- Started brand new game

- Tweaked .ini settings for cells caching

- Ran in windowed full-screen mode

- Ran on each lower graphics pre-set

NONE of these worked. The only thing else that changed (and I can't try) was their little hotfix patch yesterday, but I can't roll that back. For a while I thought saves were getting corrupted, but this turns out not to be the case.

Now, on new games, the computer is rebooting from the facemaker screen. With all my old saves deleted, I can't even play at all now.

Certain things (until eliminated):

- The game worked fine for my first 30 hours.

- Something happened yesterday to change that.

-- Could be the patch

-- Could be a Windows 10 stealth update

I've eliminated pretty much every other possibility.

This really needs addressed...my game is UNPLAYABLE under any circumstance now.

Maximus Hero VIII, Intel i7/gen6 (socket 1155), EVGA GTX 980ti, 32MB ram (Corsair), PCIe 4x SSD (HyperX Predator), EVGA 850 Platinum PSU. Water-cooled.

After 8 hours of troubleshooting this, I gave that a shot. I underclocked my 980ti and bottomed it out. Nope, crashed during face making again after about 7 minutes.

Right now I just pulled an old Soundblaster X-treme from another machine and turned off my Realtek audio in the bios...we'll see if that works. Yesterday's hotfix messed with the audio, so maybe something happened there.

Ok, so I was going to test something out and had just started the game up when my baby started crying. I left the game tabbed out expecting it to be frozen when I got back but it was stable for a solid 30 minutes I would guess. Then when I tabbed back in I noticed by CPU temp was raising pretty fast, but I've been under the impression that's not entirely unusual, as it's under load with a game so, that would be normal. I can follow google troubleshooting guides but I'm no PC expert... It raised about 10c in maybe a minute, and my kid woke up again so I tabbed out and maybe 15 minutes later came back and the temp had dropped to 35c, but as soon as I tabbed in again it raised to 45 and crashed. Does anyone know what that might indicate?

45 on an air-cooled system is pretty normal, even low.

On my water-cooled it takes 20 minutes at 100% cpu test load to get to 40c. On my air-cooled it hovers in the 60c range on normal stress.

It might be sending bad instructions to the CPU and causing the crash that way, but not by over-heating it.

After crashes, have you checked your Event Viewer under Windows Logs, Application? A lot of data shows up there and I always forget to check.

That's one of the key features of this crash...absolutely NOTHING in the event viewer preceding the crash.

The computer basically just snaps off and reboots or snaps to the desktop.

This exact same thing happened to me. I really do hate how we are essentially relying Bethesda to fix a problem with a patch at some undefined time in the future. Because they refuse to help us fix it ourselves.

I bought the game on Tuesday, played it for close to 2 hours. It ran PERFECTLY on ultra settings. Then comes Wednesday, I start up the game sometime in the afternoon after some "hot-fix" wanting to play, I cant play for more than 10 min without it just snapping to desktop. I've spent 5+ hours trying to fix the problem since then. Looking at some of the responses on this thread, it seems that this time there is not a definite or relatively reliable solution. Its almost as if I'm still waiting for release.
