Game crashes at same point

Post » Sun Jul 18, 2010 10:21 am

i have fallout 3 installed and it keeps crashing at the same spot, as im about to leave the vault for the first time, i think. and a guard shouts "There he is, hold it right there!" then *crash*

after the game crashes a diologue box pops up saying fallout 3.exe has stoped working - find a solution/close program etc...

the game runs flawlessly up until this point

and i am running vista 32bit

i thought there would be a simple solution to this problem as i have a perfectly good computer that more then meets the minimum requirements and i can play other high demand games without issue

through researching a solution to my problem; it seem as though this game is riddled with many crash related problems

i have 2 questions:
. is there a known solution to this problem of consistent crashing in the same spot?
. if not, why are you still selling this game if it dosnt work? surely thats illegal

Edit|
oh and i have tried installing the latest update and it runs the game before i know weather it has completed the update.

this could be an automatic thing that the update program does after updating the game. but without telling me weather it has finished the patch or given me a chance to view the changes, i cant help but think that this suspicions behaviour maybe part of the problem im having

please msg me back as i bought this game a few days ago and i relay want to get a chance to actually play it

Are you certain that your PC meets/exceeds the Minimum System Requirements? A lot of modern games will play fine on graphics chipsets that won't play FO3.
Consider posting a dxdiag so folks can have a look at the hardware, and also potential software conflicts:

How-to:
Please Post a dxdiag:
Start - Run (if Vista or Win 7, the search box acts like Run) - type dxdiag - hit Enter - "save all info" button - open txt file and copy/paste EVERYTHING here

found the problem i think, its not my computer. i have a 3.4ghz quadcore chipset, 6gb of memory (ddr3) and an nvidia geforce 9800gt adapter

when you get up to the point where you are about to escape from the vault (i think) and you see a guard who says "there he is, hold it right there", a small hint pops up in the top left hand corner of the screen telling you how to sneak. when i change to default keyboard mapping of this control the game crashes right at the point when the tip is supposed to pop up

i am going to get past this point and re edit all the default mappings again and see if it crashes again at another point for the same reason

thought you guys should know so you can put a fix in the next update or somthing

Mine was freezing until I downloaded fallout mod manager and changed the load order so that brokensteel.esm would load before fallout.esm.

does this game have a problem with setups that use quad core processors?

Yes, it frequently does. Running it on a CPU with more than 2 logical cores decreases the game's stability.

The directions that you linked to are nicknamed the Quad Core Fix. This ini tweak forces the game to run on two cores only.

Locate the FO3 ini file:
*Do not edit: Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\Fallout_default

WinXP: \Documents and settings\[username]\My Documents\My Games\Fallout3\FALLOUT (Configuration Settings)

Vista/Win7: \Users\[username]\Documents\My Games\Fallout3\FALLOUT (Configuration Settings)

Open that file (FALLOUT (Configuration Settings) up in Wordpad or Notepad.

Find bUseThreadedAI= and make sure it reads: bUseThreadedAI=1

Right underneath that entry add this line: iNumHWThreads=2

Close and save the changes.
