Game crashes when I talk to anyone. Help!

Post » Tue Apr 12, 2011 12:59 am

I recently cleaned out a lot of mod files including texture and menu files. Unfortunately I think I removed and deleted some files that are necessary to bring up dialogue options when I activate NPCs to talk to them. When I activate any NPC the game immediately crashes. Stupidly I have deleted all those files. Does someone know any way of replacing those files or any mod that might add the dialogue screen files again? Otherwise I am screwed. Thanks very much if you can help.

If using Darn - reinstall it.

A simple question first. Did you actually "delete" those files are or that safely housed in your Windows Recycle Bin?

No, they're gone completely. Deleted. Destroyed. Evaporated.

I was not using a GUI replacing mod at the time such as Darn but if I install it will it replace the dialogue screen with a new one?

I don't know - but are you using an installer like OBMM or BAIN?

I highly recommend BAIN - if you delete stuff from a mod (other than uninstalling it with BAIN) it will let you know what is missing .

I use OBMM but not BAIN. Maybe I will try some GUI mods like Darn and see if it will work. Thanks for your help so far.

Then did you uninstall the mods via OBMM or just delete them. If you deleted them then reinstall the OMODs.

The point is I didn't just delete mod files, I think I got rid of some essential files for dialogue screens. I don't think reinstalling the mod files will cure the situation.

All the essential files are in the BSAs so that shouldn't be it.

That's what I thought. Perhaps the problem is not deleted files then but mod conflicts or something.

I'd guess you have deleted some stuff from some mod you're still using perhaps. Does it work if you start a new game with just Oblivion.esm checked? Anyway, post your load order - it's mostly guess work w/o it. Also, with Wrye Bash you can list/post the load order for a save - it might be helpful to compare your current list with that to see which mods you have removed.
