Game crashing a bit

Post » Wed Nov 17, 2010 5:12 pm

Hi. My save has 65 hours on it. It's started to crash somewhat. For the first long while it basically didn't crash at all. I guess maybe at 40 hours it started crashing infrequently.

I guess it's nothing I can't handle but I'll be playing and you know how it is, if it crashes I kinda get discouraged/don't feel like starting up again, and quit playing.

It crashed twice today and I probably only played an hour or two total. Just a few minutes ago I was in the ruin/thingy "Sedon" I think it's called and it crashed just as I power attacked an ogre.

So is there a way to "clean" a save? I think there is. Or is that not for crashing but for something else?
Is 65 hours a lot? I really don't think it should be acting up. Some people say they have 200 hours on one save.

There are other things to consider before you condemn a "saved" game. Are you using Streamline or OSR yet? Are you using the four Gigabyte patch to allow Oblivion to use more than two Gigs of RAM? Do you use FCOM, or a mod that is part of FCOM like Martigen's Monster Mod and Oscuro's? Sedor is full of Ogres in a Vanilla Game. Wrye Bash can be used to reset a problem called the A bomb, and the ability to save a characters face, race and class.from one saved game and add the data to another using Import Face.
Post your Load Order and a DX dialogue. I can help a little with Load Order, but most of the other posters here are very good at reading and interpreting a DX dialogue.

I have Streamline but I don't use it for autosaving 'cause I find it annoying and I can do that myself, and I don't let it change my graphics options, so I virtually only use it for that thing where it purges or whatever every so often. I use OSR and also something that I think is called "Project Optimization".

I don't have 2 gigs of RAM, so no I don't use that. I don't use FCOM or any major mods. The only mods I use are Oblivion Mod Manager, OBSE, Wrye Bash (though I don't do anything with it because I don't think I need any of it's features right now. I built the patch because it was recommended and also I use save profiles) Darnified UI, OSR, Project Optimization, Streamline, and Fast Exit (which is supposed to be faster when crashing on exit. Sometimes it seems to do the trick). So stuff that doesn't change gameplay, just enhances it for PC.

I wasn't complaining about the ogres, I just mentioned them. I don't know what A Bomb is. Sorry if I'm being rude or something, but I wasn't condeming it. I was merely asking what the problem could be. It's not even a big problem.

My load order (is that the order the .esp's and stuff show up in Mod Manager?
Oblivion.esm
DLCShiveringIsles.esp
Streamline 3.1.esp
DLCBattlehornCastle.esp
Knights.esp
Bashed Patch, 0.esp

The list of mods that are activated is like this:
Darnified UI 1.3.2
Fast Exit 1.0
Oblivion Stutter Remover 4.1

(And in green, IE unactive, are a couple mods I have for mess around value like Hilarity.)

Have you used the Performance tab of Windows Task Manager to see how much Ram you are using? Your statement about not having 2 Gb of RAM could be the problem.

I brought up posting your Load Order because I was expecting to see mods. The reason to use Streamline for saves is because autosaves and quicksaves can lose data, and the lost data can lead to the problem you are having. You can configure Streamsave to only save on travel, rest and wait by pressing the right Ctrl and the Home key while you are playing.

You can resurrect a saved game by using the Import Face in Wrye Bash and Console Commands to change a character at the exit of the imperial Prison Sewer into a "clone" of your character in the save that is corrupted. TESNexus Forums has a pinned topic in one of the Oblivion sections that covers fixing a corrupted saved game in more detail. EDIT I can not get a link to work, but the information is in General Oblivion/Oblivion Technical Support. The information may be on this site, but I do not know where.

I'm slightly confused about what you're saying. Are you indicating that my save IS corrupted? For sure?

I am saying that the crashes might be your game running out of RAM, Oblivion has a minimum requirement, but your operating system also needs a minimum amount of RAM, If the two values exceed the total RAM your sytem has, You get a CTD. I would look at this as a culprit before anything else.
EDIT I should have put a space between my first line and the information about "cleaning" a corrupted save.
To save a little more memory, you could enable the Auto-Quit function of Wrye Bash.

The performance tab says, right now, just while on this forum (and downloading something):
Physical Memory (K)
Total - 1045226
Available - 259612 (constantly changing)
System Cache - 308856 (changing)

Do you want to know the kernel memory too?
Also the page file usage is hovering around 950mb.

Do I really only have 250mb RAM to use for programs? That's ridiculous (right?)!
Should I be trying to free some up?

Invest in more RAM, by getting two 1024 cards to replace the two 512 cards, you (hopefully) have. Then you can use some of the mods you asked about in other threads.
Reducing background processes and memory usage is always a good idea for anyone with who uses a computer to play games.

I've used one of Blackviper's guides for shutting down processes, however according to task manager, there are still 43 running. Still better than it was.

So would another gig of RAM help me in day-to-day Oblivion playing? I assume it wouldn't improve the framerate. I'll definitely look into getting more.
Is it needed now because my files so "full" of stuff that I've done and it has to remember? All my items and quests? Is that why I didn't have problems before?

another gig of ram sure wouldn't hurt. Idea would be to install two matched sticks of ram. I am not having much success trying to determine just what your machine has in it for memory..... (type) or, what the stock configuration was. Given that it is a P4.... I suspect it is just DDR memory..... which is becoming difficult to find. Not to mention expensive......

You might be further ahead by simply buying/building a new machine........

I'll get a new computer eventually but if I've been able to play 65 hours on this one, beating the Main Quest and all, I think it SHOULD be fine to keep playing Vanilla without mods (except performance mods).

Anyway, my RAM is DDR2 and I can't remember the brand.

PS: Note that I play on a very low resolution - 1024x768. It's my LCD monitors native resolution, as high as it can go.

Yes, the more information a saved game has to keep track of, the larger the saved game gets. This also means Oblivion needs more memory to keep running smoothly.
I can cause my game to crash by switching from one saved game to another, but I am also intentionally keeping processes and programs active to see if I can add some texture packs back into my game, and keep my current Load Order.
I will recommend the Stand Alone Wrye Bash, it uses less processes because it does not need Wrye Python installed to work, and the problems it does have are not a big problem for a player.
You read readmes and instructions, try to use BAIN instaed of OBMM for installing your mods and DLC, if you really get into adding mods, BAIN is simpler to use as an installer, and many of the popular mods already come in a BAIN ready format, like Cobl.

Wrye Bash is just a utility like Oblivion Mod Manager. With your active mods, I would not use it myself. When you start really adding mods, Wrye Bash allows the mods to work together. Cobl needs Wrye Bash to work with all of the Coblised mods.. I need to look at your previous threads again to give examples.
EDIT No Cobl dinner plate without using Bash, no campsite mods, no craftybits shoe making while sitting on the balcony of Shadowcrest Vineyard and drinking fine wine while counting the profits from selling cheese....

You can't use any campsite mods without it?! Darn...
I thought with some you could just tweak the load order... I do have something called BOSS which is supposed to do that.

BOSS automatically sorts active mods into a Load Order that should work. I can not run my game without it, and the report it provides can tell you if a mod you have is outdated, or should be removed from your Active mods list.
You can use a campsite mod without Cobl, but many of the survival mods need Cobl and Wrye Bash to work. I have an idea what you want to do in Oblivion, but I also realise the constraints living on a fixed income. :banghead:

Heh heh, yeah... if by fixed income you mean I'm 19 and don't have a job and rely on money from my parents, then yeah...

I'm definitely going to do some research on getting RAM for a good price. Our local Staples only seems to have one brand and not much selection. I can't remember how much it was. Perhaps I should get it on Newegg Canada or something?

Anyway, I just checked in because I just returned the orc who doesn't know what words mean's daughter back and on my way back to Cheydinhaal to get my money from the Guild, it crashed again. No big combat scenario, just walking into town, jumping all the way.

Are there any tips you can give me for freeing up RAM while playing a game? I have this thing called "Game Booster" which basically shuts down processes for me. I don't think I've really noticed a big difference though it claims to shut down 30 processes when I'm in "gaming" mode or "power" mode or something.

Is my page file the correct size? Could it be that?

PS: You said you recommend getting two brand new sticks of 1 gig each, rather than just one more 1 gig, right? Is that so I don't mix brands? Does that matter? Or is it just types (DDR 1-3) you aren't supposed to mix?

Most recent computers have at least two slots for memory cards, You can mix and match manufacturers, but if you have a ddr2 card, you should use a ddr2 card as a replacement. You can just buy one 1Gb card for now, then add a second card later.
I do have a similiar financial problem, but mine is caused by buying expensive toys, and a $300 a month Nicotine addiction.
EDIT Turn off as many background operations on your PC as you can. Look at the posts HeyYou has mad and try the recommendations. Read the threads in Oblivion Mods about memory usage, OSR has a few flaws, but it does work for my laptop-the settings I use do not help an XP machine-I have Vista on my desktop and laptop. I am waiting for the slow motion issues to affect my game.

Ok, I'm looking over those now.

In the "Oblivion and Memory Usage" thread it states about large, memory consuming mods,
"If you don't run these types of mods, your CTD issues are more than likely not going to be related to this topic"

And it's talking about hi-res texture mods and overhauls, which I'm definitely not using.
When you say "issues" with OSR, do you mean IT could be causing crashes or taking up a lot of memory? If so, I'll remove it... to be honest, I think it helps some but it's not all that noticeable. It's definitely runnable without it.

I'll try monitoring my memory usage like it says, to see if it crashes when it hits a certain amount.

I can't find any useful posts by HeyYou... at least in the "Oblivion and Memory usage" thread. He posted I believe twice but not with any "answers" or help, it seems.
Did you mean a different thread?

To sum up, please tell me if any of the small mods that I deemed harmless would actually be worsening my RAM usage. None of these are essential save perhaps Darnified UI...

Thanks for your patience and help.

PS: I've heard various things about different Catalyst drivers. If you have any experience with ATI, do you know if Oblivion works best with certain older ones, or would the newest ones be fine? (To be honest I either have the newest ones or the ones that came on the card disc... the only reason I wouldn't have installed the newest would have been because the card is from 08 or 09 and I figure I'm mostly playing older games so I might have gone for the drivers on the disc... not sure though. Actually now that I think of it I might have clicked "update drivers" on Steam. )

another edit/PS: Note that I've also (the whole time I've been playing) tweaked my game using the guide on TweakGuides dot com or net or whatever. Very helpful... like how certain things don't actually make a game look better but if you have them off you get better performance, etc... also I used the RAM tweak, where he suggests doubling certain caches depending on your memory. I did this and used the "1 gig" specifications.)

Ok. I guess that's that then... I'll let this thread go.

But could I just get you (or anyone else?) to confirm that the mods I have aren't actually detracting?

Using the mods tab in Wrye Bash, right click on the File header and left click to bring up a menu. select List Mods and copy/paste this to give me your actual Load Order.
You did not list the inactive mods that you are using, everything you listed is just GOTY.

Er... I kinda just uninstalled Wrye Bash earlier because you figured I didn't need it as I don't want to use any major mods.
The inactive ones are:
Hilarity 1.21
Hunger Thirst Sleep 1.0 (it's a recommended addon for the one below this)
ZOMBIES! 28 Days and a bit 3 0.3.4 (Obviously I have a whole other save for this)

DDR2 RAM? Cool. Might wanna look at upgrading that. :D

Try running the game in windowed mode, with task managers performance monitor running as well. See where memory usage is at when you crash.

Also, try doing a http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 to free up some memory before you fire up the game, see if that extends play time.

I thought DDR2 was still not that old... is DDR3 the absolute standard now?

I'll do that today (and post back about the memory use).
