Game hangs on startup

Hi,

I know this forum is flooded with these types of threads which often lead to a very frustrating conclusion concerning an ignorant mod user, so I am going to try my hardest to refrain from doing that.

I have worked with modded Oblivion for years now and this is the first time I've had this problem, on the occasion where I've tried to make my best (CTD free) load order yet.

My game gets to the first loading screen then freezes. The bar goes to about 1/5 of the way then freezes, and nothing happens after that. I don't get any message Oblivion has crashed or anything like that. I have to use task manager (Windows 7) to shut it down. I've got Oblivion installed in C:/Oblivion directory to avoid the UAC error, as well as running as admin, OBSEv19b, and latest patch, etc. I've checked Wrye Bash for any missing masters and found nothing missing, and so I am led to believe that it might be an OBSE plugin that's crashing the game? Could this potentially be something which causes the game to hang on startup - maybe a missing or buggy OBSE plugin dll? I have installed (all from TESNexus):

Tried deleting some of the more problematic ones, still didn't solve my issue. Before I tried out this load order I cleaned every single plugin using undelete + disable references and the delete identical to masters, having been informed that it was safe :). Could this be another potential cause of hanging?

Here's my load order, I think you'll find there are no stupid mistakes or errors but you never know! I'm using Wrye Bash 290, btw. I also took a look at all sorts of the logs and reports that are generated in the Data/root Oblivion folder and such, and found no reports of errors in any of them - they all SEEMED to be loading successfully.

I've also tried regenerating Oblivion.ini, to no success.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? Help would be REALLY appreciated!

Do you mean that very first loading screen when you start the game? Between that Bethesda, Zenimax, whatever and Main menu with map of Cyrodiil?

HAve you tried waiting for few minutes? I also have a delay there. Loads up to ~1/5 then it stops until I hear some equipping sound and then it loads up to the end.

First of all, and certainly most importantly, have you read all the relevant readme files (and other advice that might be available), and made sure you've followed instructions (and possibly advice) to the letter, including with regards to prerequisites for installation?

Assuming you have, then atm I have no idea what's happening, sorry. :( But I'll ponder it some more.


* edit: Oh, and if it is that, somehow, then simply delete ssao_perf.fx and ssao_test.fx from your Oblivion\Data\Shaders folder, and try using Ring_SSAO (perhaps) instead. Or whatever other appeals - if you want SSAO that is. ;)

Thanks for the help so far guys; in response I let the game load for 15 whole minutes, and the progress bar didn't increase at all. In fact I was sure it went DOWN at one point when I was staring at it ;).

Yeah, I read all the readme files and stuff like that, in fact most of these mods bar OBGEv2 I've used before, weirdly enough. I may have to do a complete reinstall, though I would very much like NOT to do that, of course!

Yeah, I've had similar problems. Usually turned out to be a newer version of a mod I installed that conflicted with another mod (where it never used to matter). Wyre Bash would not show me any issues. I just had to remove mods until I hit the one(s) that were causing a problem. I try to uninstall from the latest installed on backwards.

As just an example, I found that if I did not keep up with the latest Better Cities and Sensual Walks, one of the other would cause my game to hang exactly as you are showing. So, I got to the point that if I updated Sensual Walks, I'd go check and make sure I had the latest BC installed.

Note that the above is just an example. I'm sure that there are other mods that have the exact same, ummm, interdependencies (or, whatever).

Also, this is NOT a knock against the mods or their authors. I'm totally blown away that they can all work together at all. Bethesda should hire the lot of them : ) It's just something we have to deal with in order to play "my oblivion". I can't play without them : )

Anyway, see if you can uninstall whatever mod(s) you installed before you had the problem and see if you can find one that seems to be causing a problem. Of course, it won't be just that particular mod. It will be reacting against another mod (which may be a trifle bit more of a problem to find).

Or, it could all be handled by load order. I not sure if you said if you use BOSS or not. May want to try that if you do not (apologies if you said you did).

I'm not that great at knowing stuff like Psymon, etc., but it seems that Better Cities does like to be loaded all at the end. BOSS, for some reason, seems to put the empty BC esp up near the top. I always manually move it to the end (well, other than the bash patch). Not sure if it makes a difference or not. Like I said, I'm not an expert.

Good luck. With mods it seems the old saying "no pain, no gain" has some merit. Particularly when you start pushing the envelope for number of mods (such as myself and yourself). Of course, once you get it all working, it's worth all the pain and more.

Yeah, I get where you're coming from, I feel the same way - and thanks for the advice. I did use BOSS - but I don't think the Better Cities esp is the problem - IIRC that esp is a dummy esp to force the game to load the Better Cities resources which are in BSA form, it doesn't actually do anything. That's if I'm correct.

The only flaw I can see in what you're saying is that I'm NOT SURE if a mod conflict or such can crash the game AT STARTUP - it might mess with things in game or screw your saved games - but preventing the main menu from loading? Not so sure it can happen - can someone clarify this? Maybe your old / my current problem is caused by a missing file critical to the mod or something - and that's why Oblivion won't load in the first place? I don't really know. I've kept nearly all the mods in my LO updated as far as I know, but yeah I'll triple check again.

Not a knock against the authors but it sometimes gets very tricky to keep track of mod versions. There are many mods which don't always get updated on TESNexus, and are available only in updated forms on other sites, as well as exclusive mods like Giskard's, and it just gets very difficult to maintain compatability and a working, up to date Load Order. This is obviously no fault at all of the modders, they do some truly outstanding work, there is no way to really solve this issue, except for the user being very vigilant with their modding efforts. It is highly rewarding getting a fully modded game out though. One issue I've seen which I might try out - there was a new version of Elsweyr recently (which Iliana has since hidden on Tesnexus?), which I updated to before she hid it - maybe that and the old version of Let There Be More Darkness, as well as the Bashed Patch I'm using are not getting along well, or something to that effect with some of my other mods!

Will report back with my findings. It's interesting as I see lots of CTD, poor performance etc threads on here but nothing really where the game just freezes.

Maybe my modded Oblivion is just so much better than vanilla Oblivion that it won't load because it thinks I'll think Bethesda did a poor job on Oblivion.

EDIT: Heh, just noticed my sign up date was Chrismas last year. And now I've decided to post back here again with my new modded Oblivion it happens to also be Chrismas this year. Full circle, or what :P?

Freezing during the initial load screen can be caused by a bashed patch that contains references to missing IDs. Easiest way to see if that's the problem is to rebuild the patch with your current load order.

Here's my load order, I think you'll find there are no stupid mistakes or errors but you never know! I'm using Wrye Bash 290, btw. I also took a look at all sorts of the logs and reports that are generated in the Data/root Oblivion folder and such, and found no reports of errors in any of them - they all SEEMED to be loading successfully.

It's hard to trouble shoot when starting out with that many mods. I always recommend installing FCOM incrementally, i.e. start a new game with just a patched vanilla game to see that it works, add the core of FCOM and check - and then add a couple of mods at a time while checking for stability/issues. In your case I'd revert to a core FCOM set up and go from there.

Yeah, you're right, it probably would be good of me to go back to square one, and I'll probably end up doing that tonight if I can be bothered. I did however take a look at Arthmoor's advice, and tried launching the game with the bashed patch disabled - and it worked, it's a shame that the bashed patch is so essential to the function of a largely modded Oblivion. I tried doing several things to the Bashed Patch to see if they helped and they didn't, one of which included not allowing it to import Let There Be More Darkness. I figured maybe the LTBMD modders might have edited placeholder cells in v2 of Elsweyr or something which later got removed in v3 of Elsweyr, which may be causing the Bashed Patch to look for invalid cell IDs, but that was just a wild guess and I was totally wrong.

I'll keep playing with Bashed Patch settings for a bit, and if that's unsuccessful and noone comes up with other ideas, complete reinstall it is!

Hi all, I've had that problem. A bashed patch importing Actors.Spells from FCOM_Convergence.esp hangs the game on startup.
I can confirm the game loads fine without bashed patch loaded, or a bashed patch without Actors.Spells section--including everything but this one conflict.

I can confirm the game loads fine without bashed patch loaded, or a bashed patch without Actors.Spells section--including everything but this one conflict.

Hm. FCOM_Convergence.esp (the latest version of it, that I'm aware of) - with the assistance of the latest version of BOSS & masterlist - doesn't have that tag, by default, for me.

Not sure why there's a difference there. :shrug:

Unless *I'm* the one who's behind, wrt versions of FCOM/whatever (possible, I'll admit), you might want to check you have the latest stable versions of everything (e.g., MMM, FCOM, UFCOM, WarCry, Wrye Bash, BOSS, OBSE... and so on).

I can confirm that preventing fcom_convergence.esp from loading into actors.spells prevents my hang on startup. No idea why and I'm pretty sure I'm using the latest version of UFCOM, along with everything else.

Latest version of BOSS + Masterlist gives the actors.spells tag to fcom_convergence.esp for me as well - as far as I know I'm using the UFCOM version. I will triple check I've got the correct one.

Wow, okay. Seems I must be lagging, in terms of FCOMness or what have you.

Please disregard my previous musings then. I mean, my game works perfectly, sure, but it apparently is not composed of the latest good stuff. I'll go fix that then... assuming I manage to track down what's older than it should be. :tongue:

I can confirm that preventing fcom_convergence.esp from loading into actors.spells prevents my hang on startup. No idea why and I'm pretty sure I'm using the latest version of UFCOM, along with everything else.

Latest version of BOSS + Masterlist gives the actors.spells tag to fcom_convergence.esp for me as well - as far as I know I'm using the UFCOM version. I will triple check I've got the correct one.


I've seen that reported before (perhaps it was Green Bear who reported it). Weird issue as it presumably works for almost everybody, as it should be reported more often if it didn't. Can it be a particular version of Wrye Bash or cbash or something? Works for me with 287 and 290.

If it's happening with CBash, people should probably stop using it as it's not even close to being ready to use on anything other than a testing setup. It still has too many bugs to fix, although it was getting really close up until whatever got done in the r768 commit broke it fairly badly.

Huh. Well, I discovered that it was becaise I'd gone back to Wrye Bash 2.87 - using that, with the latest BOSS + masterlist, many tags simply don't show up, that FCOM one included. Now, that could be nothing purely to do with Wrye Bash 2.87, I know. Interesting , though.

I'd gone back to that version, because 2.90 was prblematic for me. Now that I'm using 2.91, with no issues at all, all the right tags seem to be there. :shrug:

Not sure if it's relevant to anyone, but I thought it'd be worth posting, just in case. Of course, yeah, could be I'd somehow messed around with 2.87. But, as far as I can remember, that's not the case.


edit: And I haven't bothered even trying CBash since, well, the first version I tried, quite some time ago. Waiting, still.

It could be and OBSE plugin.
Missing masters cause immediately CTD when you launch the executable (CTD even before the loading screen and the movies).

Try remove/rename/delete your Plugins folder in "Oblivion/Data/OBSE". Some mods can't work without plugins, but the game should "survive" (To be sure, you can disable every mod that use the plugins).
If the game run fine, then the problem is a plugin, or a mod that use plugins: remove them one by one to find the "troublemaker".
REMEMBER: if you remove an OBSE plugin, and the game run fine, the problem may not be the plugin itself, but a mod that use it.

Hehee :evil: ..... I know I've seen it in WB 287, but I'm at work now, will look later. IIRC it is when you open the long vertical list of tags, at the very top is a box to check. But not sure. :) And I don't know if and where it is in WB 290 or 291.

Actually I have my WB tagging set to manual (non-automated). I like to ensure myself after a Boss run that all tags are there. Which is sometimes a bit confusing as sometimes mods come with default tags that are not mentioned/ suggested by Boss, and sometimes Boss suggests tags that the mod does not have by default...

The standard procedure in these ambiguous cases according to PacificMorrowind is to leave any default tags of the mod in place. If Boss does not mention a tag, it does NOT automatically mean that it need to be unchecked. However I will religiously apply any tag that Boss suggests if the mod is not tagged with it already.

Also, I just found that "Automatic" switch you were referring to, Tom. Couldn't even recall its existence before, because I've never taken it off automatic. :)

Well. Guess I should've remembered the big change with BOSS, and figured that out for myself. Ah well.

I've been using only a Wrye Bash. What is the CBASH? I don't know this. But I have been seen the Cbash at the Wyre Bash thread in the version history.

Actually , When I'd rebuild bashed patch with Import Actors: Spells , game does not loaded just hangs on startup. And, I'd tried rebuild bashed patch without Import Actors: Spells(only unchecked Import Actors: Spells), and I'd retried startup the game. then it's worked. I don't know why but I think there is some problem at the Import Actors: Spells. But I don't know. I'm not sure
