Game Informer Dragon Shout Update V

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 5:45 am

"In the game, the final result of all the hard work is exhilarating, and even more so when you know how deep the rabbit hole goes. Every ancient wall you encounter carries an ancient legend. Every creature that cries out in dragon is saying an actual translatable thing to you."

This sounds amazing. Just imagine finding a lich in some ruins you stumbled upon. After a long battle, you defeat the lich, who utters something in Dragontongue before dying.

With a little work, you'd be able to find out what the lich said.

It would be even better if he cast a non-descript curse on you, and you'd only find out what it was by translating his final words.

Am I the only one who's not really digging this whole dragon shout thing? I understand we're the savior of the world and all, but I'd really rather be a regular person who rises to the occasion and plays on level terms with everyone else. Not someone who's equipped with a nuclear device I can trigger whenever I'm in trouble =(

then dont learn them or use them.

I was a bit sceptical about the whole dragon shout thing at first. Kill dragon, gain power to slow time... meh. This article has actually convinced me that it's going to be pretty epic...

I admit I'm a bit skeptical on these dragon shouts, I hope they're implemented well enough. The idea of searching for words on walls and such is interesting though.

then dont learn them or use them.

What a great argument.

Although I have to admit - most of us scandinavians have a HORRIBLE English accent in turn. (But I am going play big and mighty here, since I've lived in England and thus have a proper accent :P)

Most Scandinavians i have heard speaking English speak it incredibly well.

Being that the whole game is based on the character being a dragonborn, and we have the ability to learn dragon shouts, and gain a dragon soul every time we kill a dragon, it would feel unnatural to just ignore it...RPG wise. Of course I can just not kill dragons I suppose, and only do side quests.

Thank you, that was really good advise.

I pretty much feel the same way. Oh well though.

If someone tries to make another thread concerning it, and the mods close it, then yeah. I guess so.

Though I don't know why today's update would warrant a huge waiting list. http://twitter.com/Andrew_Reiner/status/28286500210737152.

I am actually excited about the dragon shouts. I was skeptical at first, but I have warmed up to the idea. They are basically super powers, sure, but they are being presented in a cool way, and they are just another method of making your character a bad ass hero. The system, with the ability to collect the words to improve the shout's power, sounds like fun, as well. I enjoyed the update as it clarified what the Dragon Shouts are all about.

Yea I saw its only a small update but hey a small one is better than none right? I think next week we'll get an article on combat since they said they would have more info on combat at the beginning of the hub updates.

Depends what they mean by small update.
If they're being entirely declarative, then don't expect much.

But on the other hand, if they were being sarcastic or under-exaggerating, then maybe we'll get something big.

Of course, that's very unlikely, and if we're ever going to get a big update it'll most likely be in the last week.

And now for something completely different; :spotted owl:

I just tweeted andrew if we would be getting an update on combat and he replied "Yes. Not today though."

Can't wait for that one. Should be next week.

Meh. I think the shouts sound kind of dumb actually....

We have to go and collect all the shouts? I dont know, seems like shouting dragon words of power will be kind of cheesy and gimmicky. There is also a "shout" button? geez.....

Still looking forward to the game but not real excited abou this idea. I like the language thing but the actual shouts Im not to thrilled about.

I don't know... I'm quite interested by the effects. Like the "push" shout : imagine being cornered on one of those craggy mountains by some overpowered foe ; shout, send him flying in a chasm.

If they're really different, it could add a lot of strategy to the fights.

Dragon Shouts.
sounds weird but I'll hold off making any comment until I play it...
...however. I remember playing a game not too long ago (forgot the name) but you had to memorize odd shapes and wriggle the mouse in specific patterns to caste spells.
I always got it wrong and it completely ruined my enjoyment of the game. (I know others loved it).
I hope these 'shouts' are more manageable.

This game you played before is called Arx Fatalis, it has a very interesting spell mechanic, kinda frustrating sometimes when you wanted a fast paced action. Though you could always check the runes and patterns in your spellbook as well stack up to 3 spells for a later use, not requiring you to cast the runes each time.

Dragon Shouts seems like a very interesting and powerful mechanic, it should make the magic and combat very fast-paced and visceral. Just like Oblivion and the magic system in it, you should be able to select a single shout in the character menu to ready it to be used with a press of a single key or button. Charging the shouts should only give a more powerful effect, and you won't have to memorize each timing and word so you can use a specific shout, after all this would become very annoying.

Dragon shouts, custom language, designed to be written by dragon talons, requiring exploration of ancient ruins...

The more i read about this game, the more awesome it sounds.

I didn't do the main quest in Oblivion until my 8th or 9th character, so I might just skip it this time as well, and not bother with Dragon Shouts.
When the time comes that I awant to do the main quest and shouts, then that's what that particular character will be in to.
If for some reason factions are cut off to me because I am known to be the Dragonborn, then so be it.
I never got why someone would want to be a 'Knight of the Nine' and a Dark Brotherhood member anyway.

I don't think it will interfere with role playing various characters.
