I don't really know what to think about the "zoomed-out map". Does it mean I also immediately see any large ruins and smaller settlements? Cause that would definitely kill the sense of wonder and exploration for me. :/

I think it means http://www.tesnexus.com/imageshare/images/511948-1233008234.jpg And I must say that I like it a lot.

No hotkeys, just a favourites menu that pauses the game?

I always thought that hotkeys gave a nice sense of fluidity to the proceedings. Hope they're still in, at least on PC.

Probably I'm just being a grumpy old man (haven't slept for 36 hours, I stayed up all night writing a thing for uni and then there didn't seem to be much point sleeping :-) ), but I found pretty much everything new in that article a little depressing.

- possibly no in-game hotkeys
- huge, clumsy interface showing about 1/3 of the info you want to have at-a-glance... is it possible to make something even more fiddly than Oblivion's interface?
- the map really does sound like some kind of 3d out-of-body experience and not, well, an honest-to-goodness map that one might pretend he found or bought in a shop.

I love the idea of perks, though... but they're old news!

Zoomed out map? The map won't be like morrowind/oblivion?

"any player can use a two-handed weapon, try alchemy, or cast a destruction spell (provided you find or purchase one)"

so does this mean you can start off without any magic and play a character void of any magical ability?

It might depend on how character creation starts out, but it does indeed sound like it. Although, I have a feeling we will all start out with a maybe a few spells, because how else is a person supposed to see what kind of character they want to make if they aren't given the tools to experience it?

Edit:
The zoomed out map will still most likely only show what you've seen, so areas you haven't been to yet might just appear generic, or be grayed out. Its supposed to be a top down perspective, as though you were a bird looking down.

Me doesn't like that new "favourites" menu. They could do at least 10 slots for one-button access for PCs... That's not convenient to go to that menu and choose a potion to drink or change weapon to healing spell :shakehead: Mine only hope is numerated items in that fully customizable menu and one-button acess to first 10 of them...
Please :icecream:

EDIT: Oh, hope's broken, just noticed it's not possible to change the order of items... Beth... Please... Do it just for PC players

But what about assigning shortcut values to specific items ? Is that out ? I'm going to go bat[censored] if I have to go back to opening some menu each time I want a health potion.

100% agreed. I love having items hotkeyed.

I hope on the PC version the favorites can be mapped to the number or F keys by default.

I think those will pop-up only after you visited them.

What a lackluster update. I was excited to learn more about the UI. Apparently they thought it would be enough to rehash what was in the Gameinformer mag that many of us read a couple weeks ago.

Seems that way.

No attributes, no birthsigns, just skills and perks.

Fun fun... :shakehead:

At this rate, we'll be at Fable's system in no time at all.

Once you choose a perk, it lights up the corresponding star in the constellation, making it visible when looking up to the heavens while interacting in the world.

Awesome.

What does that mean?

Birthsigns. Which gave you cool powers. Like the Lord "restore health". Fairly certain they're out, makes no sense keeping them if you don't have classes - blank start and all that. Understandable, but I'm le sad panda all the same.

Where are attributes by the way ? We have attributes, right ?

...Right ?

"As we mentioned in the Building Better Combat story, the world of Skyrim features over 85 spells, many of which can be used in a variety of ways."

So much for them being more like spell *effects*, eh? I hope Gameinformer's just misinterpreting again...

In general, I liked what I read. I really loved “When you glance to the sky after you’ve played the game for a while, what you’re seeing in the sky is different than what somebody else is seeing based on the constellations."
That's something really smart and nice. Thumbs up for you there Bethesda :)

What I'm really sad and disappointed about is:

- From the map view players can manage quest icons.
Does this mean we'll have QUEST MARKRS!? :chaos: Hopefully it also means that we can disable them? Since it says "manage." Quest markers destroyed the meaning of thinking, discovering, tracking, exploring (imo).

- From the map view players access fast travel.
Really disappointed about this , even though it was stated in the GI article as well. This kind of "click on the map you travel anywhere, from anywhere" svcks according to me. I'd much more prefer something more immersive with a somewhat logical explanation, like Morrowind's fast travel system - where you had to pay a travel service-NPC for a transportation to other towns, plus teleport spells like mark/recall and intervention

- From the map view players can plan their travel route.
Not really sure what this means? Plan their travel route? Anyone got an idea what it would actually mean in practice?

- Something else that caught my attention was: "Pulling the camera as far away as possible gives you a great respect for the size of the game world."
Hopes and wishes that the game world is bigger than Oblivion :)
Ideal would be 70-100 square kilometers to me.

I'm worried about this favorites menu. How many things can you put into a favorite? Is it only weapons/armor?

so far i havnt seen anything on if birth signs are still in. but i would assume so but that would that is something different to the skill selection in the sky.

Its always been like that.

i know, i was answering the question where someone asked about the mage, warrior, and thief in the sky

I think they might have missed a great opportunity by losing the birthsigns. They could have acted sort of like traits in FO 1 & 2, giving a character a unique edge. I guess they're really focusing everything on the perk system.
