Game Informer Update Today IV

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 8:11 am

Good update, but I went with "could have been better" because they could have at least made the screen high rez, but nope. We get a low rez shot.

So it sounds to me like it's:

Kill a dragon = increase your progress toward earning the ability to learn another shout.

Find dragon script on a wall somewhere = learn a word, but you can't learn a complete shout until you've killed sufficient dragons.

I could be wrong, but that's what it's sounding like to me.

I think this is AWESOME. The only concern I have is that it will overshadow magic in the game. But as long as the shouts do things that no magic effect in the game can do (such as slow time,) then I think it should work out. Magic will still be necessary and useful, but the dragon shouts will do things magic can't. That's my hope, at least.

I am very disappointed to hear this. Once again, the devs have shown that they are lazy and don't care about the fans- as far as I am concerned, Skyrim will be broken until a proper system of verbal conjugation is included- one with dual plural forms and multiple moods, tenses and voices- along with several declensions for nouns and adjectives, including at least six cases with distinct forms for each number and gender.

I really, REALLY hope that was sarcasm. if they didn't care, they'd make them talk english! I've seen tons of games and movies do that already...

EDIT: I guess the wink means it IS sarcastic lol. I'm so dumb sometimes

That guy's gotta be kidding... else we've got ourselves one veeerry wierd forum member :P

edit: And Isu, relax -- the devs always have a solution for fans that want more out of their games --- mod it! :tops:

I wouldn't be surprised if each dragon unlocked the ability to learn a specific dragon shout, and that dragon would use that shout against you.

I believe it was mentioned, possibly in the magazine, that the dragons don't breath fire, but create it by speaking certain words, ie a dragon shout. So, to get the ability to learn Fus! Ro! Dah!, you'd have to fight the dragon that would use that against you.

That would be really frightening to have a dragon "stealthily move close" to you "in a mere instant".

Edit* Though I don't see how a roaring shout could be very stealthy.

I'd see a more scary use of it. say, you're fighting on top of a REALLY high, steep mountain, you want to jump on it, you're about to land and... where is it? ah [censored] I'm falling!

I'd download it ;)

Bet the Greybeards will have great fun teaching the Dragonborn all the dirty words in Dragon. :/

Well, the devs might just say that since dragons have quite different biology to humans, we should expect the genetically endowed language faculty of dragons to have quite different properties to the genetically endowed language faculty of humans... So there's no reason to expect that all of the rules which determine which strings of letters are well-formed in human languages will have exact anologues in the dragon language.

I didn't know any of this...

Reading it.... Basically this seems derived from Frank Herbert no?
The Voice, and using specially formed shouts as a weapon?

Dune.

This reminds me a lot of the old Ultima spellcasting system (which also involved a "language" of magic words which you put together in meaningful combinations. Combine the word for Negate with the word for Poison, to get a cure for poison, or combine Create, Large, and Poison to do an AoE poison attack.)

I kind of hope they hearken back to that a little and use a smaller set of words and a larger set of potential combinations, rather than each word being used in only one shout. And while you ought to give us a few shouts, it would be nice to leave some up to the player to find out for himself using a combination of common sense and trial and error. Probably too much to hope for, but it would do more for my sense of nostalgia. I'm feeling tempted to mod it in now, though. I'd probably be a jerk and require reagents for spells too, if I did, heh.

There were 100 places where gates could show up, but I think (and I may be misremembering this) only about 50 would pop up in any one playthrough.

And there were only 7 different maps used for the gates: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Planes_of_Oblivion

Not sure I ever recall Muad'Dib using his voice as a weapon (he did indeed use his voice quite often to convince people and the like, but as weapon?). Perhaps in later Dunes (I haven't read them, only the original).

Dude... he broke a guy in half with his voice. That was the whole strategy behind their rebellion. Use the amplification of the "voice" as weapons.

Edit: Oh... and I never read the book. Maybe it was only in the movie? But that seems like a huge thing to just add in.

Someone put up direct links to the hi-res versions, but his post has since been deleted. I managed to save the hi-res of the in-game screen though.

But as far as I can tell, no. I don't see them anywhere in the GI article.
