Game keeps randomly crashing : Fallout 4

Already posted this on the Steam forums, but I guess here's a better place to get replies.

It ran fine for the first 30 hours or so, not my game keeps crashing all the time for no apparent reason.
Mostly it happens around Sanctuary Hills and Red Rocket, sometimes even when loading savegames around there. But I also had it crash on me every time I tried to talk to Dogmeat for the last time during the "Reuinion" quest. I updated my graphics card drivers and then I could complete that quest, so I thought I had fixed it, but now the crashes are even more frequent.
I have literally no idea what could be causing this.
Tried running it Vanilla, without any .ini or nvidia tweaks, tried borderless mode, disabled mods etc. Nothing helped so far.
I already spent 50 hours on my game, I would really hate to have to abandon it now.
Anyone got any ideas/fixes?

There's also no error message or anything when crashing, it just crashes to desktop without warning.

Couple of things. Two of your hard drives are running out of space, especially your 2TB one. Delete stuff out, give yourself about 15% free space minimum.

Secondly update the the latest Nvidia driver see how that goes.

Just updated my drivers earlier and now I'm doing a complete re-install of the game to see if that helps.

Will see about freeing up some more space on my HDD, though I think 75GB should be enough, shouldn't it? Also, I have the game installed on my SSD now, because I found the loading times on my HDD unbearable.

Will see if the re-install and driver update helped and write again afterwards.. in the meantime, if anyone else has any more ideas, I'm listening. ;-)

You should never operate your HDD at less than 10%. That's why it shows in red in windows. However I play it safe at ~15%. Low HDD space interferes with swap file operations and is generally considered bad.

I have just gone through a similar thing to you. This is what I did:

1) Delete the ini files in Documents/My Games/Fallout 4 directory and let Fallout 4 generate new ones (Fallout4, FalloutPrefs, Fallout4Custom, Fallout4Prefs_Custom).

2) Kept an eye on the temperature of the system. For this there is a lot of software, I used Open Hardware Monitor (google)

Check your components manufacturer's max temp load values and compare with the the values you have post gaming.

Here are my specs and I'm glad to say, touch wood, that the game is running 'kindly' now.

Operating System: MS Windows 7 64-bit SP1
CPU: Intel Processor i7-4790K @ 4.00GHz
RAM: 7.89 GB

Tried 1) a dozen times already, still crashes.

Really don't think it is 2), since I can run Witcher 3 at Ultra and others no probs, but if nothing else works, I'll check that out.

Right now I'm sending my save file to a friend to see if my save or my game is the problem.

Well, I played for 10 minutes and CTD'd. Not an issue I've had with my own game since I increased my PF awhile back.

Admittedly I have not played for some time but I suspect your save is indeed corrupted. I played enough before trying this save to know it's not my PC/game. (I think...)

God, I'm such an idiot. Seems it was a mod after all, which is weird, since I thought when I tested without mods before, I also had crashes.. guess I got confused with all the mod-disabling/enabling I did when testing.

After my buddy tried the save without crashing, I deactivated all my mods again, tested a bit and then started enabling them one by one.

As soon as I enable this one, it crashes in a matter of seconds, sometimes directly after loading my save at my Red Rocket settlement: Quieter Settlements (can't post nexus link for some reason)

Someone also posted a comment there, pretty much describing the same issue I'm having, so I'm hoping this really is the culprit, so I can play normally again:

The fact I am not running any mods, and the save complained about it may have something to do with it.

Which mods were/are you using?

I think it's with mods, but should run anyway, you just get that typical Bethesda message about some stuff not working.

Anyway, did some more testing, ran with all my other mods now.. ran around a bit, went into building mode, slept.. no crash.. activated the Quieter Settlement mod.. crash after less than 5 seconds.. (tried that several times, always get fairly quick crash with it, sometimes as soon as the save file is loaded, sometimes a bit later.. without it, haven't had one again yet *knocks on wood*) so it really looks as if this is the culprit. Of course, a few minutes testing isn't conclusive yet, but it sure looks like it.

Anyway, will keep playing later and hope it doesn't crash anymore now, it's not like that is a mod that is so urgently needed. ;D

Thanks all for your help and feel free to keep testing, if you want, in case this wasn't the problem.

I will post again later, whether I have any more crashes or not.

Yeah that's quite the list. I'm not surprised my testing lead to a CTD as I have none of those.

Advise isn't the same as accusation mate. Take it from someone who experienced Skyrim from the start, and someone with 1000+ hours mod creating experience, not including outside Papyrus scripting.

I also ran FO4Edit to see if there was a file conflict, before asking here. I'm not a complete noob, you know. ;-)
