Game locks-up occasionally

Post » Wed Oct 13, 2010 12:46 pm

I've had this happen about 3 times, now. The game will have a quick graphical glitch, then freeze with some sounds turning into a buzzing/humming. The game will stay like that permanently until I hold the power button on my computer to force it off. This last time the game locked up like this, it actually made the HDMI signal from my video card to my monitor disappear (got the HDMI No Signal box on a blank blue screen, then monitor went into sleep mode).

Seriously, man, what is going on with this game?

I did update to the newest NVidia Dispaly Drivers yesterday, though, but I was having this problem before.

I actually also don't get that massive fps drop that people have figured out was caused by NPC heads, either. Just the occasional fps dip when looking in directions that have a lot of visible distant terrain (i think that's what's doing it), and the inside of the Primm casino for some reason (when looking toward the center of the room with the car visible...can't figure that one out, either).

And btw, the blue screen I got with this last lockup wasn't a BSoD, it was what my monitor does if I turn it on with the computer off.

I have a similar issue. The FPS can bug out once in a while, dropping consideribly and I get occassional graphic card related crashes (your video card stopped respondinhg and recovered, type crashes), which require me to end task on the game and restart it.

I'm at work so Ill just list my system specs from memory:

Windows Vista 64 bit
8 GB DDR2 Ram @ 1066 Mhz
Intel Quad core 2 duo 9650 processor @ 3.6 Ghz
EVGA Nvidia 285 GTX Driver version 260.89 (Just saw Nvidia released newer 260.99 drivers will update tonight)
Intergratred Reltek HD Audio Drivers update in August is the best I can remember (Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6 MB w/intel X48 chipset)
WD 750 GB Sata HD

Thats should be enough for now.

I sure hope the PR guy and other Bethesda dudes are cataloging this issue for future investigation. It's a pretty serious one.

Well, I just got my 4th lockup crash forcing me to hard reset my computer. This time, though, it actually caused a Blue Screen of Death.

I'm thinking it's one of 3 possibilities making this happen, since I started all of them in Primm (after getting ED-E. this is where I first got this issue)

Possibility #1: mods - I'm using: Add Empty Bottle, a mod that puts an empty Nuka Cola or Sassparilla bottle into your inventory after drinking; Caravan Card Fix, a mod that fixes the issue of cards bought or found not being added to the Caravan Deck; Improved Throwing, a mod that makes spears and knives and hatchets convertible to their thrown forms, and vice-versa (also adds survival-based recipes to create them from the junk you find).

Possibility #2: the .bat file I'm using to skip the Launcher and go straight to the game. I'm not very computer savvy when it comes to what some changes like this may do, but I honestly don't think this would be causing the problem. After all, Fallout Mod Manager does the same thing for Fallout 3, and I used to skip the Launcher with Oblivion....I couldn't see this being an issue that would just randomly present itself into the 3rd usage of this particular version of the Gamebryo engine.

Possibility #3: ED-E himself. I never hit a single game lockup crash before getting ED-E. In fact, after repairing ED-E, I went around the Bison Steve killing Gangers, then went inside. The first crash happened inside the Bison Steve. I would also point out that my ED-E is experiencing that random bug of friendly people attacking it for no reason at all.

I'll go turn off the mods to see if any of those are causing this.....we'll see how long I can play before the game crashes again.

I have the same problem but it happen every time I play the game with in 5-10 minutes of starting to play and it started only after the 2nd patch before that I play two 6 hours sessions with not 1 problem.

I can tell you it isn't anyone of those Possibilities becuase I don't have any of the mods/bat/ED-E and it does the exact same thing and with the slow/not at all response from the developers I wonder if I will ever get to play this game.

Well....turning off those 3 mods seems to have solved the issue. I just played for around 2 hours or so with no problems, even reloading my quicksaves a lot.

It's either that, or this issue truly is extremely random. I'll post back if I ever get this issue again.

Pentium Quad Q660 2.4 Ghz
2 GB ram
500 Gig hard Drive
Nvidia 250 lastest drivers 260.99
Windows XP Sp3
Direct X 9.Oc Updated.
.Dll work around because of stutter

I get a random Freeze about every 3 to 5 hours of playing. System will just lock up and require a reboot.

At least the game is runable with the latest Nvidia driver and the .Dll work around. However, there is still much that can be said about the General performance, clipping issues, and some scripting issues. Even after 2 patches.

This freeze issue kind of reminds me of the freezes that quad users had in indoor areas in F03. Never Got officially fixed. INI. work around (fix) for this issue came from the Users - not the developer.

I would like to keep my hopes up on some major fixes soon. But I wonder just how far obsidian is willing to go - to redeem themselves on the many issues that this game has.

I think it must've been the Improved Throwing mod. The guy altered the way thrown weapons behave, making them not stick in walls and stuff and not disappear so they could be re-collected.

Don't know how that could possibly have been the cause, but I turned on the Caravan Card Fix and Add Empty Bottle mods back on and I still haven't had a crash yet.

But, then again, it could just be an extremely random crash.

Also having lock ups here, same as TS said.
Sounds start hanging, meaning a bloody annoying sound thru my speakers...have to do a hard reset in order to get the computer working properly again.

I7 920 @ 4,1Ghz
6GB DDR3 @ 1523mhz
GTX 295 with latest drivers [260.99]
Asus Xonar HDAV 1.3 w latest drivers [OSD off, GX mode disabled] Note: GX mode on and the game won't even start, just like FO:3
Logitech Z-5500 running DTS Digital
Direct X 9.0C with latest update
Windows 7 Ultimate with latest updates

Game:
Latest patches installed, no 3rd party mod's installed

I'm also having hard lock ups now as well. Game play fine for first few hours. However now when I play for 10-15 min it seems to crash to a black screen with the audio still playing or buzzing. Then have to power down and restart. This game is unplayable at this point. Really wish I could return it. I don't mind dealing with bugs and all but this is just a joke!

Just had the game do it upon startup. Didn't even get past the first logo screen. Caused a BSOD this time, again.

I've been having crashes with the sound looping too but there is another way to avoid rebooting your machine.

Kill the game through Task Manager first and go into Device Manager (Devmgmt.msc)
and disable the sound card (the sound looping will stop)
then enable the sound card and you're good to go.

Only slightly quicker than pressing the reset button but still better.

Exactly the same happned to me, but from the start. Crashes every 15 minutes.

I tried the dll and ini workarounds, turned off Anti-Aliasing and anisoptric filtering completely, but nothing helps.

The parts of the game I was able to play were great, but I could not advise anyone to buy the game at this point. This whole crash issue seems to affect A LOT of users. They have to fix it soon and make it their priority number one!

What good is an open world, if you loose any will to explore it, since you know the game is gonna crash any second anyway :-(.

Very disappointed.

Maybe I didn't make it clear what was happening, but by "lockup" I mean the game engine still has control of the computer when this happens. Being forced to hard-reset the computer is just that, being forced to hard-reset. There is no getting to the Task Manager in order to do anything. When it locks up, it locks up. Twice, out of the 4 times this has happened to me, it has caused a Blue Screen of Death. That's how bad these crashes are.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound rude. I know you're just helping. It's just that I wanted to make clear what's actually happening.

In fallout 3 - I did have the CTD's/Freezes bad due to the no-support for quad processors ( A issue was never officially fixed ) until the .ini fix was discovered ( set to 2 cores ). I am really wondering if I should test out Fallout New Vegas on 2 cores (Same Fallout 3 .ini fix) to see if it gets rid of the random freezing on New Vegas. Many of the fallout 3 issues followed in New Vegas, only they are much worse, in addition to many new problems.

Anyways it might help to research Fallout 3 fixes for freezes and CTD's .
