In Game Map

Post » Tue Aug 25, 2009 8:49 pm

One thing that always bugged me was that oblivions map had all the cities on it from the start. The thing i loved about morrowind was how i had to explore the world even to find the cities. And there was always a sense of adventure when locating them, did the fact that the map already had all the cities on it bother anyone else or is it just me?

I want to actually find the city before it appears on my map. I didn't like how you could automatically travel to any city in Oblivion, even though you've never been there.

Even though it's much faster and easier to have the cities on your map from the start, I prefer finding them on my own.

If it wasn't for fast travel, seeing big cities on the map wouldn't bother me. I mean, it's a map. It should at least have the most obvious landmarks shown.

I wouldnt mind so much if they were there but I had to travel to them manually before I could quick-travel (or w/e they use in TES V).

I wouldn't want the cities to show up on my map, but maybe an unnamed depiction of a city without any marker yet would be good.

It depends. I'd only want them not to be on my map if NPC's gave very clear directions. If they don't, I'd rather not wander aimlessly until I stumble across a city. I'd want it on my map from the start.

Fallout 3 did a good job on this one, no instant fast travelling everywhere from the start. It made the world feel larger. I don't mind if they are on the map but unexplored (so no fast travel) though, the location of major cities on a map should be pretty common knowledge.

I like the idea of stumbling across a city you didn't know was there - but it makes sense to have the major ones on the map in the first place. Agree to no instant fast traveling to places you haven't been yet though.

As others have said above me, I wouldn't mind having the cities marked on my map. Having to manually make my way to said city before I can fast-travel there (something I actually don't want to do anymore at all) is mandatory. :P

I don't mind if the major cities are on the map, but I would prefer they not be able to be FT to. Although, in a way, you could FT to other cities if you found one so it sort of worked the same.

Yet I think it is reasonable to assume that if you grew up in that world then you likely know where the major cities are, so maybe just having Major Cites on the map is ok and FT or some other travel system between them is ok too.

I prefer the map to be completely blank in the beginning.

I liked the way Morrowind did it. Finding each city gave me a huge sense of accomplishment.

First of all , I do not want fast travel in Skyrim (Because if its there, I will use it, If its not, I won't need it). So, if there is no fast travel, cities can marked on your map (because every map atleast has major cities marked on it).
I loved the map in Morrowind. You couldn't even see the cities until you discovered them...

I tend to be of a mind with the people saying that it really isn't plausible that a map won't have at least the major cities (Capital of the State, 2 or 3 of the most major cities) and roads marked. I've never seen anyone sell a completely blank map in my life (I suppose you could probably find one if you really looked). I am happy, however, with the idea of most other villages and hamlets not being marked initially, no caves, ruins, shrines, etc. NPC's might mark them for you (I think that happened in Morrowind sometimes), so that you can see them on the map, perhaps you can buy additional info for the local area from a scout, hunter, or militia officer, etc. Of course, exploring could reveal things too.

It depends.
If the protagonist in Skyrim is completely new to the province then he/she should start with a blank map.
However, if he/she has lived there for a while it only makes sense that they would know of the locations of the major cities.

It should say where the cities are, It's a map for crying out loud... You should not be able to travel to them right from the start though.

I definitely think that we can't have all the cities unlocked when you 1st reach the map. It should be like Fallout 3 where you have to go out and visit it at least once before being able to Fast Travel to it.

I voted no, however if the major settlements where on the map but you couldn't fast travel to them initially (well, I am against fast travel in general actually) then that would be acceptable

Morrowind style: i remember how i went looking for Caldera the first time i played it, and even that short trip was very adventuring and fun

I would love it if the maps are blank at the beginning, you should have to ask for directions if you want to have the major cities plotted on your map. I just started up a new character on morrowind and decided that, instead of taking the silt strider to balmora, I would follow the roads and use the signs, it was much more entertaining to walk all the way there, and run for my life from the nix hound that began to chase me at one point.

It would be cool if they added a map to collectors edition, and have a shadowed map ingame so we could make use of the map recieved from that.

I voted no, but it really depends on the size of the map.

If it's oblivion size, or even 3-4 times larger, I'd want them hidden, but if it's more in the realm of say, daggerfall size, definitely marked from the beginning.
