Game Mashing

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 12:53 pm

A lot of games seem to want to mash together features from different genres. Sometimes this works well, other times, not so much. Adding puzzles to a first person shooter would not work too well, I think :)

Anyway, I was thinking about this the other day and looked at the genres I like and started wondering what fun game could incorporate. There are 2 genres I'd like to see mashed together: 4X and Open World Roleplaying. I think Fallout 4 may have some elements from both, but have not played it yet.

Resource management and "eXplore, eXterminate, eXpand, and eXploit" from the 4X genre for truly building a home or base combined with the quests, stories, exploration, and character development from RPGs would be my idea of a game that I could play for years on end. I'm not sure how combat would work, though, as there would be singular combat and group/army combat.

Anyway, what genres would you like to see "mashed together?" Have you found any games that mashed genres that you've enjoyed?

a cross between a First Person Open World RPG, and an economic strategy game like Europa 1400 could be interesting.. in theory..

I always liked the hacking of cameras and turrets, and the opening of safes in the Bioshock games.

I always wondered if you could involve music in games. Perhaps a western game with a nod to

first British music invasion of the US , Gilbert and Sullivan, might work.

Whatever Assassin's creed mashed together when they made Black Flag was perfect.

Lots of FPS shooters have puzzles. Like the Metroid Prime series, Portal, and Prey. (even a bit in Borderlands.)
Not to mention, many FPS stealth games have puzzles.

Although, puzzles in something more traditional like Halo or CoD would likely feel out of place. But when the mash-up does work it works great.

I often use a number of economy mods in Oblivion and Skyrim to push the game towards this. A few of my character literally do nothing but take advantage of regional prices by traveling from town to town, buying low and selling high. Or they open their own stall and earn livings as merchants themselves. I find this to be an oddly fascinating way to "bend" the game.

Another mash-up thing I do is to use a boatload of "realism" mods: mods that adds the need to eat, drink, sleep, stay out of the cold, ect. I see these mods - and New Vegas' so-called "hardcoee Mode" - as a kind of mash-up of The Sims and roleplaying.

What about Half Life or Portal? Those were an excellent mash up of puzzle and shooter

A mash up I'd like to see?

A mix of an RTS, RPG and a third person hack and slash game.

Essentially you control an army and give units in it certain commands on a map in game, but then jump into the role of the champion in certain units and engage in the fight. You could return to the map and continue issueing orders during the game and then just jump into the fight again once orders are received.

For Example:

The enemy is attacking you on a field, they have light infantry and are moving fast towards your lines You have a unit of men at arms and a unit of crossbow men. You order the crossbow men to the ridge line to provide covering fire, in order to give them time to reach the ridge, you order your men at arms at the enemy and then play as the champion for that unit. Once the crossbow men are in place, you can switch over to their champion and begin to pick off the enemy with ease.

Then after successful battle, given how well they did, the champions would level up and you could give them more skills, better/different weapons or armor etc. I figure this kind of mash up could be used in almost any scenario, though i planned it for a medieval/fantasy setting, it owuld just as well in a more modern, futuristic or apocalyptic setting.

What I have always wanted is a pinball game, where you journey around the table inside the pinball. You would be launched and you would have to attempt to control the

pinball as it careers around the table racking up points in the usual pinball table manner. I know, some people want to be elves, I want to pilot a pinball around a table!

You know what would be more interesting then mashing in features? Taking some out. Think how a Bioware game might be with no combat (although, Telltale comes to mind.) Think how an Assassin's Creed game might be with no animus. An MMO with no grinding or leveling.

Ah... Thanks for the info as I do not play FPS games since Doom 2 and Hexen/Heretic :)

This sounds interesting. I would give this a try :)

This could be interesting. And different! I wonder if this would be a good platform for VR, ie: head movement for control?

This could be an interesting take on the idea. Some games do seem to have "too many features" which can become cumbersome :)

How 'bout Arkham Series "free-flow" combat in just about every other game? Pretty soon here we'll be seeing attack/counter/dodge Arkham style play in games like NBA 2K.

Then there is the extremely overused Gears of War over-the-shoulder 3rd person camera. Even in non-shooting games developers insist on making the camera this way. The field of vision is too low, and stealthy gameplay can be broken by it. Imagine Metal Gear Solid 1 & 2 with over-the-shoulder cameras. Ack! Bethesda games play better with a centered camera as well. STOP MAKING YOUR 3rd PERSON CAMERAS OVER-THE-SHOULDER!!!!

Then there is of course too many 'open world survival' games. I honestly don't know what game started that first. The open world sandbox survival games are rising in numbers faster than zombies, cats, and rabbits populations' combined.

I'm getting burnt out on just about every other game containing every element of other successful games.

A mashup of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapper and Mortal Kombat where you have to keep people served and collect tips, but if you accidentally over-serve someone they accuse you of staring at their girlfriend's butt and you have to fight them to the death.

I could not agree more, Crippknottick! Especially about the "over the shoulder 3rd person" crap. That is why I can not play TES totaaly in 4rd person. I just can not aim right with that view.

Sometimes, though, a game may mash a couple of genre ideas and actually be good :)

This actually sounds like fun, for a little while :)

my buddies had an idea awhile back for "Karaoke Warriors" combining rockband like singing and street fighter style combat. the better you stay in tune, the more proficient your fighter!

Yeah, I totally agree. It's my favorite AC game second to AC2 and the sailing part is awesome. I wish more games (cough next TES) used real time sailing mechanics.
