game outer borders?

I am curious as to how others feel about the outer borders on games and how they would prefer them to be tackled.

Games or game add-ons that feature on an island are easy and believable as the water acts as a natural border. The same is with impassable mountain ranges or military defences. But to make every border as a conveniently placed mountain is going to eventually make Tamriel seem daft. The alternative is to just place in long stretches of an invisible walls that turns the character back.

Thoughts?

I absolutely adored Morrowind's continuously-generating cells of water surrounding Vvardenfell. Psychologically, it made the game world feel very large to me. It was also fantastic for modders!

I hate invisible borders around a game world. I detest them. I especially dislike Bethesda's "Turn back. You cannot go this way." messages. After seeing that on my screen a few times I want to punch something.
