Game overwrites my changes to the fallout.ini

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 1:11 pm

Ok so I had problems with mouse lag, newly introduced after installing the newest Nvidia drivers (260.99).

1. So I turned off vsync in the launcher. Only that didn't actually turn off vsync.

2. So I went into the fallout.ini (after going into the properties for the file and unchecking the read-only box) and changed "iPresentInterval=1" to "iPresentInterval=0". But when I then ran the launcher and ran the game, vsync was back. Ugh.

3. So now I start the launcher, make the fallout.ini not read-only, edit the .ini, save it, and go back to the launcher and run the game. If I don't, the game will take it upon itself to change "iPresentInterval=0" back to "iPresentInterval=1".

You know what? Having to do this irritates me. Having the vsync option in games at all irritates me. Only noobs who don't know their mouse is lagging and their frame rate is being capped want vsync on. Serious gamers turn this crap off immediately.

Anyway, , sorry for the rant but does anyone have a better solution than 3.?

You need to modify the fallout_default.ini in "steam\SteamApps\common\fallout new vegas" otherwise the launcher and steam will overwrite any changes.

Before doing this back up your unchanged default .ini. Otherwise if you screw that one up, you will be reinstalling,

I'm not sure why everyone recommends screwing with the default ini still anyway. Since they turned off Steam Cloud i've had no trouble with customizing the FalloutPrefs.ini in the /Documents/My Games/FalloutNV/ folder. That's the file the game uses.

The read-only Fallout.ini in that folder is just a copy of the Fallout_default.ini in the game folder. You don't need to edit either of those to make changes, just FalloutPrefs.ini.

Thanks for all the help, guys. Really made my headache go away.

I wish Obsidian would be kind enough to document these kinds of things somewhere. There are so many .ini files across different folders I have no idea what to edit.

i guess because with fallout 3 the people were used with edit the fallout.ini file, but with vegas it seems if using the launcher the fallout-default.ini always overwrite the fallout.ini and all changes there.
ist this correct?
the easiest solution for this ist of course to edit the default.ini :)

i read the first time here the falloutprefs.ini is enough but does this really matter if prefs oder default ini?
i have some texturemodes and this here in the default.ini and it's working, why should i delete this there and add it to prefs.ini?

[Archive]
SInvalidationFile=
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
bUseArchives=1
SArchiveList=ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated!.bsa, Fallout - Textures.bsa, Fallout - Textures2.bsa, Fallout - Meshes.bsa, Fallout - Voices1.bsa, Fallout - Sound.bsa, Fallout - Misc.bsa

i just cant see the advantage of editing prefs.ini instead of default.ini, is there something i dont now?
