In game screenshot?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 5:47 pm

Okay guys I may sound kind of dumb here but is this screenshot in game?

I mean like IN GAME? You know, like if I'm out for a leisurely stroll through Skyrim, will I see this without a cutscene?

http://www.elderscrolls.com/skyrim/media/screenshots/dragon-triumphant/

Because if I did, I'd probably think "Holy crap that's [censored] awesome....." then proceed to piss my pants and run in the other direction.

Seriously, would anyone else be intimidated to hell by this in game?

It looks freaking sick as hell. :goodjob:

Bethesda doesn't do cutscenes. ever. i seriously do not get where this "is it a cutscene???" mentality came from.

but yes it's in-game.

I'm surprised, actually, it's not the screenshot I was expecting the thread to be about.

But yes, it is an in-game screenshot, presumably, all images under "Screenshots" are, whereas the ones under concept art are obviously not in game.

Actually, Morrowind and Oblivion both had cutscenes, in fact, you see one as soon as you start the game.

But regardless, they never posted screenshots from cutscenes and said they were in-game graphics, and in any case, these days, a lot of games already use in-game graphics for cutscenes, so it wouldn't necessarily make that much difference.

Haha, now I think I'd really like to sneak around and follow a dragon for a while to see what all it does. Watch the fireworks as it burns down a town and carries off all its inhabitants?

That was not a cutscene, it was an intro video, and the one after the main quest was an outro video. Cutscenes are live things rendered ingame and scripted. If it plays a bink video it is not a cutscene. Bethesda does not do cutscenes. The closing of New Vegas where Ron talks and the slideshow shows is a cutscene. My mod has a few cutscenes. But the video's are not cutscenes.

Those were all shot on the 360 too so if ur a pc player then hooray for u unless u have a crappy computer then hope u have money to up ur graphics card...otherwise get it for the console...albiet the textures wont be as shiny but they wont be as bad as the pc on low settings..

Pretty much everything we've been shown that isn't clearly concept art is in-game, except maybe that one wallpaper. Even the wall is supposedly taken from the game, although they most likely just used the texture and didn't take an actual screenshot.

The wallpaper with the dragonborn standing on the rock with the swords is clearly too detailed to be in-game as he looked a lot less impressive in the video. Textures were lower res and you could pick out the polys if you looked carefully.

I still wouldn't call the video in the beginning and end a cutscene, reguardless of what wikipedia says. All games have those kinds of things. A cutscene is more of what you get at the begining and someones end of a Call of Duty level. (references Big Red One, not MW2 or BO so you guys dont rage..) And Bethesda never does that. But they also don't really fit into this kind of game and are hard to do well, so they avoid them.

EDIT: There it one when you get kidnapped by the Enclave in Fallout 3. But I can't think of any others.

The end of Oblivion where the Avatar of Akatosh defeats Dagon is a cutscene.

But regardless of personal opinion, the intro and outro of the game are still considered cutscenes. A cutscene is simply a moment of a game where action is involved but no extensive gameplay is used. Pre-rendered cinematics are a part of this.

The more I look at that image, looking at the size of the trees compared to the rocks/hills they're sitting on, the more I'm convinced that the scale of those mountains is an illusion.

I can kind of see what you're talking about, but it's possible the perspective is deceiving us on the actual size.

If it is as I am feeling, then I'm guessing they're using the mists to create that trick of perception. The mists make them feel further away than they actually are.
