Game Size

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:40 pm

After comparing the size of the PC to the dragon and the dragon to the landscape in the background of the official site, I'm having
difficulty believing the map isn't any bigger than Oblivion's.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Well, the overall surface area will probably be much larger, due to the verticality in the landscape of Skyrim since there are so many mountains.

Not sure I'm understanding the question.

Todd confirmed awhile ago that the map is "roughly the same size as Oblivion". Which means it's probably a little bit smaller...

even smaller, since you can't exactly or would want to traverse the many many mountains in Skyrim

I have no clue how you are tying this to the size of the map.

Lol that's true, but it's confirmed to be around the same size as OB anyway. Just to quell any worries, quantity doesn't equal quality. Many people on here prefer MW overall, and that had a smaller map.

Yea the world does look really big from what we've seen. They have said it's "roughly" the same size as Oblivion but I think it's going to feel bigger overall. When you throw in all of this huge mountainous terrain and these huge dragons it doesn't seem like it should or would fit Oblivions scale.

It will likely feel bigger since we won't be able to go in a straight line anywhere due to all those craggy peaks. The down side of this is that we'll probably end up walking through the same areas over and over to get around the mountains.

visually we could see far, far into the distance of the terrain beyond the invisiable borders of the map in OB. probably not different in SK.

Its because you could not go in a straight line everywere, same with Skyrim, which will make it feel larger.

I agree, Morrowind felt larger because (1) your character got tired if you just kept running so you had to walk a lot more often and (2) Getting from places like Seyda Neen to Balmora (which, when you think about them, are actually quite close to one another) seemed a lot longer because you had to walk around all the mountains. I just hope Skyrim feels a lot more dangerous than Cyrodiil did. You shouldn't be able to prance around as a level 2 character from city to city and not have to keep running for your life if you venture off the roads...Morrowind was much better at that.

@OP The background on the official site is concept art. It even has a dragon painting taken from another piece of concept art (from the GI article) placed on top of it. And it looks quite different to these mountains http://cdn.zenimax.com/akqacms/files/tes/screenshots/CompositeMountain_wLegal.jpg which are apparently in-game.

Just look at the mountain at the end of the trailer the one all the way to the right, and compare it to the trees. It's going to be huge!

Except, it's probably going to be a little smaller than Oblivion. Hopefully it will seem huge.

Yeah, if my memory serves me correctly Oblivion holds the title of the largest in-game map in square km so we'll see does skyrim claim that crown.

It doesn't need to be bigger, it needs to feel bigger. And with the huge mountain ranges in skyrim, it will feel huge.

I think Daggerfall does. It's like the size of the UK. Albeit randomly generated.

Yeah it will probably be smaller but keep in mind that more is sometimes less. :)

Why does people keep making this argument? None of the games maps are in scale compared to the other games maps, so why would they do that now?

its big enough. morrowind felt about right, and it was smaller than oblivion. like many other have said: quality over quantity. and itll probably feel bigger than oblivion and thats what counts.

Skyrim will be at the same size as Oblivion a standard game box with a dvd inside, might be two for pc if they have to shoehorn it in on a DVD for xbox 360. :bolt:
