Game of Thrones (ASoIaF) Thread #2

I'm a fan of that theory, although Martin seems to enjoy subverting his readers' expectations. It may be misdirection.

Yes Jaime most likely killed Aerys for the gain of house Lannister, I'm almost 100% on that. It's very hypocritical of all the scorn and bad talk Jaime recieves for killing the mad king Aerys because people were happy to hear that he was gone and they knew it needed to be done,

It's a likely theory we still don't know what the promise was,But Martin is really good at making all the wishes of the fan base become dust.
I also have a theory that

I kind of agree with maester Aemon on the AA bit
Spoiler
That the Azhor Azhai is Dany. she fits the bill of the prophecy, she was born in "smoke and salt," on dragonstone (an active volcano the "smoke") during a raging storm (the "salt" from the ocean waters). Heck her "Flaming Sword" could be drogon himself. A comet appeared when she first got her dragons which I think is another part of the prophecy. Aemon also hinted that the translation might be wrong because dragons "have no gender" meaning they can change six depending on what is needed for them to survive so a dragon can be either male or female.

I think Arya will start to play a much more sinister and background role in the coming books. I'm thinking martin will continue with naming her chapters something other than "arya" like he did in FFC and ADWD. I think in the future we'll start to see a lot of mysterious deaths that benefit the starks and maybe Dany. Altough I heard a few theories that Arya may get contracted to kill dany or her dragons which would end up being a pretty good story arc for her IMO.

It has to do mostly with traditions, and the faith of the seven and the old gods. Lots of things are taboo and a great offense to the gods, like the "guest right" which is a sacred law of hospitality, that basically means if you offer a person "bread and salt" while they are in your house that a pact has been made and neither party can harm the other while they are a guest in the house. To break that taboo would make the offender invoke the wrath of the gods and that person would be considered an outcast, or at least looked at as cursed.

Since Jaime broke an oath he made that was recognized by the gods he became a pariah in the eyes of the faithful (read: most of the seven kingdoms), which honestly makes me love his character even more. My favorite characters in the series are the ones who are more morally dubious, like tyrion, Theon, and Arya (the book version, not the toned down tv version). they just seem much more human to me. The truly gray characters are the ones who seem the most real.

I think it's likely true. It's the theory that makes the most sense.

Spoiler
It would explain the apparent disparity of Ned having a bastard with his 'honour beyond reason' personality. It makes sense that Ned would keep Jon's real parentage a secret, given Robert's homicidal prejudice against Targaryens.

She also does kill a loved one...Makes more sense now I'd forgotten how Drogo died.

Oh, man I didnt even think of that!
Spoiler
Drogon was birthed by the fire from drogo's funeral pyre, which lends a bit more credence to the "Flaming sword" actually being dany's dragons rather than a literal Flaming sword.

In the books he's under fed and hasn't touched a sword in months. He gets beaten then too but the fight goes on a bit even though he's bound still but I think that's cause it takes Brienne a while to realise he will kill her and she can't kill him (since she swore to deliver him). Isn't Brienne just weaker than the likes of Sandor Clegane?

I like this idea more. It makes more sense than him being of a [censored] or fisherman's daughter, even being Ashara's son doesn't make much sense.

I heard many people are upset that Ciaran Hinds is playing Mance Rayder because doesn't play the part very well. Is he a bard still in the show?

Normally I would have seen episode one and two but I don't have HBO, so it'll be a few months before I can see all of season 3.

Martin said she was definitely smaller and probably physically weaker than the likes of the Clegane bothers and Robert,But he says nothing of her abilities though.

I know she's smaller and weaker than them but I always thought she came close

Found a comment on her height by Martin
"Brienne is well over six feet tall, but not close to seven, no. Just off the top of my head, I would say Brienne is taller than Renly and Jaime and significantly heavier than either, but nowhere near the size of Gregor Clegane, who is the true giant in the series. Shorter than Hodor and the Greatjon, maybe a bit shorter than the Hound, maybe roughly the same height as Robert."

She's also described as muscular

No, that was awesome.

So, is the TV series Game of Thrones actually the stories from all of the ASoIaF books?

So maybe she's about as tall as me around 6' 2"-6' 3" and a bit more muscular.....seems the most likely height for her.
Jaime is said to be the best sword in Westros and he learnt from Ser Arthur who was defeated by Rahegar several times and Robert defeated him,Would that make Robert a better warrior?
If so Brienne is definitely not as good as the Jaime's and Robert's and Barristan's when it comes to combat but she is in the league of Robb stark or Jon Snow, who are said to be great swords in their own right.

They are going book by book,3rd season is the third book...

She's "well over 6 feet" so she's not going to be just a few inches above, I'd speculate she's about 6' 7", that would be well over but not close to 7ft and it makes her still seem freakishly tall like she is.
Arthur wasn't defeated by Rhaegar in combat, he lost a joust but that's not swordplay. Arthur towers above all in the series as a true knight and exceptional fighter, he'd have saved Rhaegar and slain Robert on the Trident. I'd say it's Arthur, Rhaegar and then Robert in order of best warrior. I don't think because Robert slayed Rhaegar that he was the better warrior, many factors and luck account for victories.
I love the dialogue between Eddard and the Kingsguard at the Tower of Joy;
Spoiler

“I looked for you on the Trident,” Ned said to them.
“We were not there,” Ser Gerold answered.
“Woe to the Usurper if we had been,” said Ser Oswell.
“When King's Landing fell, Ser Jaime slew your king with a golden sword, and I wondered where you were.”
“Far away,” Ser Gerold said, “or Aerys would yet sit the Iron Throne, and our false brother would burn in seven hells.”
“I came down on Storm's End to lift the siege,” Ned told them, "and the Lords Tyrell and Redwyne dipped their banners, and all their knights bent the knee to pledge us fealty. I was certain you would be among them.”
“Our knees do not bend easily,” said Ser Arthur Dayne.
“Ser Willem Darry is fled to Dragonstone, with your queen and Prince Viserys. I thought you might have sailed with him.”
“Ser Willem is a good man and true,” said Ser Oswell.
“But not of the Kingsguard,” Ser Gerold pointed out. “The Kingsguard does not flee.”
“Then or now,” said Ser Arthur. He donned his helm.
“We swore a vow,” explained old Ser Gerold.
Ned’s wraiths moved up beside him, with shadow swords in hand. They were seven against three.
“And now it begins,” said Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning. He unsheathed Dawn and held it with both hands. The blade was pale as milkglass, alive with light.
“No,” Ned said with sadness in his voice. “Now it ends.”

Not enough of Jon and Robb's actual prowess has been shown to say they're as good as Brienne

MAY be better, as he was recognised as the best sword by many in the realm. This is all subjective mind you, but given the way people respect him, this may be the case. Also, IIRC, Jaime squired for Barristan, and Jaime too became a great warrior. While this in itself means nothing, it's often birds of a feather with squires and knights.

Having Robert there is subjective as well since Robert isn't a swordsman. He uses his warhammer. So Selmy would be between Rhaegar and Robert. Selmy did survive the at the Trident

Really? Whoops, my mistake. Forget the Jaime implication then. I still respectfully hold Ser Barristan as the best.

Selmy doesn't even like Jaime and holds him in low regard lol, I think only the Lannister employed Kingsguards like him.
