Game of Thrones (ASoIaF) Thread #2

I'd say that ranking swordsmen, especially swordsmen who aren't even contemporaries, is as pointless as ranking all-time greatest baseball players. (Sorry.)

I'm not sure if I'd go so far as 'upset'... It's a strange bit of casting that doesn't at all resemble or act how I pictured Mance to be, but then again, Ciaran Hinds. He's a pretty darn good actor.

The ones we did compare were contemporaries, some of them maybe dead, but they did exist and wield swords and fought in the same time period in the same battles even.

He's a twisted little sod alright, and so's Bolton the youngest ; still, I find myself crossing my fingers more for Littlefinger's demise, although I suspect it will be long in the making. He's just... Too... Slimey ! How the hell can't someone as smart as Catelyn Stark not smell him from a mile away. Speaking of which,

I can't understand why they changed the Reeds' introduction.

It made sense for Arya and Dany's stories to be tweaked from the books but why the Reeds?

All they had to do was introduce them at Winterfell.......

Guess the director really likes Osha.

The reasons for the late Reed-introduction has been stated by the showrunners to be two things. Partly they wanted to make Season 2 less confusion by trying to introduce as little characters as they could. And it was also a budget issue, they couldn't have too many characters around without actually doing enough. It would be too expensive.

Heh. I understand the bit about overwhelming the viewer with too many characters but the budget issue is a bit odd. Didn’t know the Reeds would command so much $$.

Guess I find it bothersome that they’ve now parachuted the Reeds in from nowhere. /shrug.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Well, I don't know. That's just what I read the showrunners said /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' /> Something about not being able to afford having characters "wait around".
I guess we'll have to see how the Reeds develop over the next few episodes!!

Well that's why they have to cast new characters, just like they re-casted the actors for Beric Dondarrion and the Mountain. Most actors don't put up with playing a small part then two seasons later play a major role, it's not good for their reputation and it's not good for the HBO to have to pay extra cash to keep what is considered an extra one season and a major character the next.

Each was alive at the same time and each competed against the other at some point in time, lethal or otherwise.
No one cares for baseball players anyway, there is only cyvasse players! /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

Catelyn isn't smart, not by a long shot. That reunion would be interesting and might be possible.
Bolton's bastard you mean, "The son is just the shadow of the father". I think Roose is one of my favourite characters, he's cold, cunning and has everyone's attention when he speaks.

If Catelyn was smart there would have been no war,Ned would have been alive and the story wouldn't have been half as interesting.

What are you getting at here? I said she wasn't smart, LostInSpace brought up the intellect of Catelyn and claimed she was smart.
Spoiler
Ned's death was his own doing completely.

I'd probably tag that Ned part since you know...it's the catalyst for half the story

Claimed is a strong word. /tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />
Yes, I still think she is - that's why the character annoys me so much. She is reasonably intelligent (I mean, she's no Tyrion, but come on, she's leagues ahead to a Cersei), but don't act intelligent. You see that she can be decently perceptive about others or situations, can keep up with war planning, and then bang, pushes Ned to be hand, regrets it the minute after, captures Tyrion, etc... I think that's in the series Rob points she's the least authorized to judge him for being rash.

Strong words carried by strong men /cool.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

Ohh without a doubt she's smarter than Cersei, who is in her own league of stupid. Catelyn does show signs of low-cunning but this shouldn't be confused with actual intelligence. She doesn't push Ned to be Hand using intelligence, but rather cunning tactics (to uncover the Lannister schemes and protect Robert)

I'd say Ceresi is more or less afflicted with madness than stupidity.

Mmm not quite, she's not as Mad as Joff, Viserys or Aerys to name a few. She is described by many as stupid opposed to mad.
-Like her perceived paranoia of the Tyrells (which isn't completely misplaced)

Power Mad and Power Hungry are probably the best ways to describe Ceresi....

Ned never wanted to be Hand,Cat forces him into it,because she thinks that the Lannisters had something to do with Jon's death,She was also stupid enough to capture Tyrion when Ned was still in Kings landing and she also knew Tyrion's brother Jaime was also in Kings landing.

She likes being on top, yes, but honestly, despite my seeing her as a real 'c u next tuesday', I think her main issue is she's bitterly disillusioned with life.

I think both Cersei and Catelyn are intelligent.

One just made rash decisions becasue she was trying to protect/save her family (capturing tyrion, releasing jaime etc.)

The other is shortsighted and only thinking about the immediate wellbeing and power of her family.

Intelligent people can make rash and uninformed decisions, too. That's not exclusive to stupidity. Catelyn isn't good at playing the game (neither was Ned), and Cersei is playing too many pieces at once (without considering the variable that the pawns she is playing are people with their own agenda's as well).

Spoiler
Catelyn and Ned were being set up to fail from the beginning, they were being played as pawns before the story even began. It's hard to play the game when you didn't even know it had started yet.

Well guys...I'm a little late to the party I know but, I just got all caught up with the show the past week and I have to say...I'm impressed, very well done series so far!!!

I've never been into fantasy movies or novels, just video games so I thought I would absolutely not get into the show but, boy, I couldn't have been more wrong, lol.

How does the show correlate to the novels? Is it like TWD where both are different universes and follow similar story-lines or does it follow the books word for word? Depending, I might be interested in reading them. Could someone link the books and the order to read them?

Then there's Victarion "Vicky" Greyjoy, who manages to beat everyone else in the stupidity game, and also becomes one of the funniest POVs at the same time, such as when he says how he's going to sail on the Dothraki Sea, wonders if he has said the correct prayers every time something goes wrong. http://i.imgur.com/UwYsK.png

Spoiler
Then he goes and gets himself a volcano arm, which for him seems to be a perfectly normal thing for him. Like, he's clearly thought about getting one before, he just never got around to it before.

The first season follows pretty closely to the first book, but the second season deviates from the second book pretty heavily. I haven't actually watched the third season so far, so I'm not sure how closely it follows the third book. The Game of Thrones tv show and "A song of Ice and Fire" book series are closer in structure and story beats than The Walking Dead show and comic book.

The series of books is called "A Song of Ice and Fire" and the order they go is: A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, and A Dance With Dragons. The first three books happen in succession, but the last two books overlap in timeline. You shouldn't read them out of order, though, since there are some part in a Feast for crows that happen before A Dance With Dragons. the book series is also unfinished like TWD, and there are two more books planned to be release, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.

I'd actually give that award to Viserys. Pompus, entitled, impatient, and utterly stupid.

Damnit I'm so pissed that I don't have HBO where I live. I was introduced to the world of Westeros through the show during it's first season and after finishing season one I went out and purchased book one and later finished the rest of the series. It's making me restless to watch the character previews on YouTube.

Is there a way to buy the episodes on iPad? I know they can be bought through Steam on PC...

It took a year after airing for season 2 of GoT to be released, so I assume it'll be around this time next year when season 3 is available for Blu-Ray.

Edit: nevermind, I just foud a reliable source and I'm now watching episode one and two of season 3, for free on my iPad. The giant was incredible to see!
