Game of Thrones (ASoIaF) Thread #2

I don't like the shows design period. I always imagined them to be this pale dead beautiful fair look. Not like weird looking dried out corpses. Something like http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20101211204753/lotr/images/4/48/Dead_Ones.png corpse in the Dead Marshes from LOTR. (Just paler with a more ethereal look to them)

Showing is frankly a danger. Since they're not afraid of taking liberties, it would perhaps have been wiser to merely create a creepy setting and suggest. Take for instance the Reavers in Firefly. They are scary, mostly because you never see them on screen, more than a few violent rapid blurry images. The rest is built up on the tales you hear of them, and the terror of the characters. Perhaps the same, in a otherworldly ethereal fashion (they are living cold, I think).

I found the representations bordering on ridiculous. The wights shouldn't be scarier than the Others.

Huh, I always just kinda imagined the white walkers looking like draugr. /shrug.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

EDIT: Oh, the Others.... yeah, I have no idea what I thought they would look like.

White Walkers = Others
The undead corpses (wights) are their servants.

I have seen that complaint on many George R R Martin Forums where people say his books are all six, violence, and death and some refuse to read his work because of that. Personally I like his writing a lot, the only thing I wish is that he could write faster because if he does not do that pretty soon the series will pass by the books in the story and I think that would be a real shame. Not that I don't like the series, I love it, however I think the series needs the books to lean on and not the other way around and as soon as the HBO series passes by the books in the story it begins to tell the story, even if Martin confides with them and tells them the direction its meant to go. I would much rather read the books first then see the show, and I don't think it would work as well the other way around.

I read a news report and it says Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) has gone completely broke, read it here: http://www.cinemablend.com/pop/Game-Thrones-Lena-Headey-Broke-Claims-She-Has-Less-Than-5-Bank-Account-54391.html

You know... is it bad that Charles Dance's depiction of Tywin has made him one of my favorite characters? He's just so much more likable in the TV series.

Yeah, in the books he's neutral/remorseless. Yet in the show, he's like some kind of wise grandfather at this point.

I would be more sympathetic of her plight if a friend who owed me money hadn't just used the "less than $5 in account" line word-for-word on me just last week.

Tonight's episode is going to be much better than the season premiere.

Question time.

Of the three major story arcs (the war in Westeros, Dany's shenanigans across the sea, and the business with the Night's Watch), which one do you overall enjoy the most?

I think I like Jon's the most, the locale, the people he encounters, the mystery of the Others... it's just awesome.

I find the war to be the most enjoyable, and Dany's adventures the least. The Wall has its moments.

Just give me dirty politics and some good battles with a fantasy-medieval sauce.

I can't decide which one I like most, but I definitely like Dany's least. But perhaps that will change, when

Spoiler
Victarion and the Dothraki will become major players there. I love those guys.

That's a tough question to answer.

MAJOR spoilers through book 5:

Spoiler
There's major crap going down with all 3 of those arcs at the end of the 5th book.

-In Westeros, you have the possible war inside King's Landing (Tyrells vs. Lannisters), further south you have the Dornish and now Aegon. In the North you have Stannis possibly taking back Winterfell, with Manderly/Davos possibly installing a Stark back into power. Along with those, you have the stuff happening in the Vale with Sansa and Littlefinger, and you also have ossibly a Red Wedding 2.0 but this time the Boltons/Freys/Lannisters will be the victims.

-Across the sea, you have Victarion Greyjoy, Tyrion, Jorah, and Barristan trying to save Meereen and join Dany's cause. And Dany is meeting that one Khal's khalasar of 20,000+. If she got those 20,000+ dothraki, her soldiers/slaves in Meereen, and then the Ironborn, she could possibly finally head to Westeros.

-At the Wall you have the assassination attempt on Jon and a possible resurrection and the whole Prince That was Promised/Azor Ahai/the guy that defeats the Others prophecy. The war between the Watch and Wildlings, and probably the Queen's men too, since the giant attacked one of the Knights. And Benjen is out there somewhere, I think he may play an important part in the last 2 books. Also you have Bran and his supernatural abilities. He may be able to communicate with his siblings using weirwood trees.

The stuff happening at the Wall/Beyond is the most important, but I love all of the politicking in the war for the Iron Throne more. And Dany's arc as a whole bores me, though her arc in book 3 is pretty good.

So,I decided to watch Episode 9&10 so I could enjoy them without going 'Wow, I do not like this change and that', and I have to say, Rains of Castamere at the end of Ep 9 is pretty haunting.

Westeros definitely.
Spoiler
Eager to see what will befall of Varys' latest intervention. Players are being removed, but others come into focus : little Margaery is shaping up to become one mini Olenna ! I assume that without Kevan to head the Lannisters, and with the timely intervention of Ser Robert Strong, we'll have a comeback of the unholy duet Cersei/Qyburn (perhaps in a shadowy capacity, I don't know how she could come back fully after her walk of shame, perhaps as a pseudo born-again dowager Queen), vs the Tyrell, vs Aegon/Griff/Dorne. And you have the fate of Brienne/Jaime vs. Stoneheart, now Sam in Oldtown, and that vulture Littlefinger in the vale... Everything's in westeros, pretty much.

Then the Wall, because of Stannis/Melisandre, then least Daenerys. Strange that we do put her all least. You'd think we'd all be more interested by the dragons/more exotic setting.

The war in Westeros is the most interesting, no contest. It's just so much more complex and multifaceted (no surprise, since most of the characters are there) than the other two. I also quite like Dany, even in ADwD. A lot of people dislike it when Dany is petulant or pining over Daario Naharis, but I don't mind it. She's an interesting character, and for the most part the places she's at are fascinating. And she does get a disproportionate amount of awesome moments (one of which is coming up in the show either this week or the next one). Jon's arc I like the least, because generally, I think prophecies and the Great Supernatural Other are just boring. GRRM is a good enough writer and brings such a thoroughly cynical and realistic take to these worn-out cliches that I never really dislike Jon's chapters, but still I don't remember ever seeing a Jon chapter and going "yes, finally!". I really like Samwise Samwell though.

I'd have to say Jon's, then the war, then Dany's. I liked Dany's story line in the beginning but have since changed my mind.

I really want to see where things go with Jon and Arya as characters. Though my friend has told me what happens with Jon (and Cersei) in the books. Kinda spoiled it for me. /frown.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

I have a question that's bugging me:

How exactly does one pronounce Petyr Baelish's name? I say it like 'Pether' Or is it no different than 'Peter'?

It's Peter.

Another enjoyable episode. Though more and more plot-lines open up, I'm completely okay with it.
