Next to Jon Snow, he's the best character in the show and in the books.

I've yet to read the books, so I can't speak for them. I don't doubt the validity of this statement though.

Nobody else think the acting was a bit poor in the last episode? I was laughing at a fair bit of it, especially Jon Snow and "The Dragon". The dialogue has been a bit weak as well. I'm losing interest in this show fast.

Jon Snow's laugh when he was on watch with the rotund guy was particularly painful.

In general Snow isn't too bad, but when he laughed on the wall. I was cringing so much, it was so forced and horrible I just couldn't take him seriously after that. The angry captain of the watch was terrible as well, can't remember his name.

Argh, I've read all the books so far, but I have basic cable where I live, so I havn't watched it yet. I DO plan to go over to my father's place over the summer to have a GOT marathon though. :celebration:

(book wise) my favorite characters in order are: Tyrion Lannister, Arya Stark, Jon Snow

Jon Snow's character can act with his voice but not his eyes. They are like dead fish. Sansa Stark and Jofferey are so deplorably unlikable its hilarious and almost unwatchable. Tyrion's is the only consistent one so far. As for Ned, poor old Ned. To be perfectly honest, Sean Bean couldn't act himself out of a paperbag. Getting him to play strong 'good' characters is a waste of his talent - he excels at being the bad guy. GoldenEye, The Island, Hitcher, Ronin...and he's also good at dying horrible horrible deaths. One out of two isn't too bad, I suppose.

I have to admit that I thought some of the on-screen chemistry in the last episode (4) was awkward. That's really the fault of the director, IMO. Ned is supposed to be notably stoic, so Bean's deadpan doesn't bother me. I have had to roll my eyes at how ham-handed the script has been at some points, though. I realize that the scriptwriters have a tough job trying to compress boatloads of subtext into a drastically smaller space due to the medium as well as accommodate viewers with limited attention spans, but there have been some incidents of clumsy paraphrasing that had me groaning.

Don't get me wrong...I'm still quite interested in the show. I'm looking forward to people's reactions when

Arya has been done with much justice. Tyrion like everyone says is excellent, so is Bean as Ned.

To be fair, that pretty much describes how I felt about both characters through the first 2 or 3 books.

I liked Sansa a lot more in the books. I think of her as a sort of fragile, naive ice princess, rather than as the awkward whiny girl portrayed in the series. Not well cast at all, and nowhere near pretty enough.

Arya's casting is curious as well, in that Maisie Williams is so beautiful; the books initially suggest that Arya's not pretty at all, though I've always thought of that as implying a wilder sort of beauty. Ned tells her she looks like Lyanna at one point, who was famously lovely.

Anyway... I'll be interested to see how (or if) the series handles the Sansa/Sandor thing.

Spoiler
I think they already ruined the chances of that happening, as they changed one of Sansa and Sandor's first key moments when he tells her how he got burned (and then threatened to kill her if she told anyone). Instead, they had Littlefinger tell her which I found weird, but they could also be setting up those two for later in the series as well.

Yeah, I found that weird too. The telling of that story really seemed to lay the foundation for all their future interactions. Having someone else, who really had no business knowing the story in the first place, tell it seems an odd way to go.

Spoiler
It is puzzling. Her character is largely defined in the books by being a rising star among Westeros royalty whose dreams are crushed by opponents of her family. In the show they keep talking about how much she likes it in King's Landing, but in every scene she has a look on her face like somebody just told her that half her family was about to die. :P Not only is the show not depicting the transition of her character from excitement and elation to emotional ruin (a transition that essentially defines her character), but it's not being consistent...with the book or with itself.

I think I actually like the new Sansa. Shes still got that naivety, but she doesn't come off as quite as clueless, which makes her a bit harder to hate.

I've never understood the SanSan shipping, so I don't particularly mind the change over to Littlefinger telling the story.

Is it just me, or does Dany always have her hands just dangling by her sides?

Spoiler
Sure, I suppose they're looking for ways to give Littlefinger's character more screen time, which makes sense in light of the fact that he and Varys are largely responsible for pitting the Starks and Lannisters against each other in the first place (it's surprising how many people don't pick up on the fact that GRRM gives this away in a certain "cat chasing" Arya chapter in the first book). Still, though, I thought that Sansa's relationship with The Hound played a large role in her character's lifestyle transition (not to mention a large part of Sandor's character development), and so far I don't remember hearing the character speak once in the TV series.

As far as the "shipping" goes...I'm assuming that Littlefinger is holding onto her because as far as most people know she's the last blood tie to a legit claim on Winterfell. He just has to out "faux-Arya."

Hehe...I hadn't noticed, but now I'm going to be subconsciously looking for it. Thanks for that. :P

Spoiler
SanSan refers to Sansa and Sandor. I agree that Littlefinger is at least somewhat politically minded, but I think most of his love for her is due to his infatuation with Cat.
