Game is so unbalanced

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 4:02 pm

Falmer are definitely not the hardest enemy group in the game although I wouldn't want to fight them five on one. I would give hardest enemy honor to Ancient Dragons. You'll be wasting a dozen health potions just killing one if you fight them solo. Easy to heal against but you'll be wasting health potions.

I agree about Enchanting and Smithing, although both of those skills depend on the player, meaning it's up to you to determine how broken the skill will be. I'd actually argue that the game is very balanced, bosses are hard, grunts are easy.

I think its funny that you guys have the power to make the game as easy or as hard as you want it yet you complain that the game won't do it for you.

My thoughts exactly.

Everything can be very powerful in this game, the master level ice spell does 30 damage for 10 seconds if someone is within 30 feet of you, i recon thats pretty damned strong. The master alteration spell lets you resist 80 percent of physical damage, thass pretty damned useful, everything is really strong in this game if you max out the perks, why would I max out the perks to have them be useless, as some people propose on this forum !?

God mode is not there for the console users.

Its like your friend stepping up to the tee and you only give him a SW because thats how you play and you wanted to gimp the game for everyone.

Fine - add #11 - give console players some basic cheats.

I am not saying you should not become super powered. But at least make it difficult. Make it occur after your character has hit level 50+. Right now it is easy to hit god mode without trying. And the balance changes I outlined would make it better.

In my experience the game is amazingly balanced for Adept at normal levels.

Master is very unbalanced. I've played at Master, Expert and Adept. Each has a bit of good and bad.

In fact I'm personally starting to very much dislike the overused words of "overpowered" and "underpowered" in a game as complex. It is virtually impossible, it seems to me, to completely "balance" the game with the number of skills and character combinations.

I can't help but laugh every time I see someone call intended game mechanics exploits. Single player games do need balance to have some sort of challenge, telling me people not to use half the skill trees or perks isn't good enough.

It's all in how you use what's available. Enchanting fixes Destruction magics scaling issue. Perked alteration helps you survive those overpowered NPC spells. Conjuration also supplements destruction well.

Enchanting + Blacksmith + Alchemy = Overpowered

Dremora Lord + Twin Soul = Overpowered

Making yourself a god is pretty easy to avoid and the skills play off each other well. We're not competing in a single player game so just give your character whatever you think is reasonable. Even if you want to be a conjurer that uses all 3 crafting you don't have to abuse the synergies or constantly use dremora lords.

You never need alteration

Traps do extremely little damage

Not true for alteration if you want to go pure mage with just clothing, no physical armor. You also get magic resistance from it's tree.

Traps...hmmm, did you bump into one of those dwemer-blade traps? But I partially agree, there should be more with higher damage.

The game is supposed to be "play it the way you want", and that includes, sometimes, wanting to make an overpowered god character, just to see how far you can take it. I sometimes do that on my 3rd of 4th playthrough, just for fun. And yes, some people do have fun doing that. People who want certain aspects of the game nerfed because they cannot control themselves, are calling for me to NOT be able to play it the way I want if it suits me to play my single-player game that way, even though it is affecting no-one else if I choose to do so.

I see it more as some people being unaware that it is possible to either overpower or nerf a TES player character in certain ways, and playing the game as if it's a race to gain levels or get the best gear - when it isn't. The only person you are racing is yourself. Just take a step back and stop trying to race to the next level, next time you approach a forge with 100 iron ingots in your inventory and a plan to get your smithing skill to 100 in one sitting, step back and think about what you are doing. TES games are supposed to be games you invest in bit by bit over many hours, and a race to "beat" the game will cheat you out of what the experience is supposed to be about. You only have yourself to blame if you do that. Take time and savour the game, don't go mad on the crafting skills, and you will find it is well balanced if you don't try to grind to get better equipment than your level deserves. If you're a newcomer to the series, TES requires a slightly different mindset and approach than other games you may have played.

Take a moment to enjoy the beautiful aurora borealis instead of spending an hour at the forge....

YAY, another person that uses nothing but magic, kudos, it is the road less traveled. And a very fun and interesting road as well. So many spells, so many possibilities ^_^

Enemy wise
- soldiers are poor enemies at level 40 and are extremely easy

wich soldiers? almost all stromcloaks and empire troops are lvl 10-20 and dont level innit? ye those get weak at 40... but IIRC all others scale with you.

- Falmer are more powerfull than daedric princes at level 40 (falmer i think, are the hardest enemy in the game, also the most annoying)

I'd say they are about the same really, but they are NOT the hardest enemy at all

- boss level monsters apear too early and are usualy a long way into the dungeon (meaning it's a pain to flee)

this is true, some really painfull experiences getting level 30+ spawns when doing dungeons/quests at lvls 10-20 =< not to mention wildlife ment for lvls 30 or so when walking to places <20

Skill wise
Destruction is not viable without Enchantments that reduce spell cost at higher levels

I wouldnt say its not viable, but its definetely silly that without skill enchants your mana, no matter how high the mana pool, drains in half fights, and with enchanted gear it can get almost undrainable (or unlimited with exploits)

Conjuration is too powerful until simple bandits learn how to anihalate dremora lords

no comment really, I dont use this tree.

Smithing is too powerfull

not really... it makes warrior buildups more interesting and progressive but ye... dont think its anymore powerfull than enchanting or alchemy, just completly different and usefull in different ways to different buildups.

Enchanting is too important

dunno what you mean... only leveled it to 100 and perked it on 1 out of the 3 chars I played to 50+, the other 2 chars didnt miss it much at all.

most illusion becomes useless once at a certain level

I dont like that you need to invest perks in it just so you can use spells on mobs of your level range, but, if you do, you get novie spells that are effective even at lvl 20 wich no other school can claim...

You never need alteration

bellow lvl 50 you only really use it for armor buff, but alteration has the best defences of the game for a caster... best CC spell, medium long term armor buff, and armor cap short term buff, not to mention usefull stuff like transmute, detect life, telekenisis etc.

Enemies seem to be able to use weak items and turn them into death machines ( weak bows and spells like frostbite)
Traps do extremely little damage
various perks

afaik enemies scale normally, they start with 25 skill tables and go up to 100, their health/stamina/mana pools do seem to get much bigger than ours tho.

I've got a better question tho, why does balance really matter? Ok some skills being less useful or underpowered clearly does matter but why in a game like this does it matter if you're overpowered?

Because it's not challenging? I actually like to be challenged...otherwise I get bored.

Making some game mechanics too powerful and others too weak reduces gameplay choices, IMO. If you have to avoid certain avenues for your character because they make you too weak or too powerful then what's the point of them being there to begin with?

So you consider having only Destruction as free an exploit? That being achieved with only leveling Enchant to 100 and not through multiple alchemy loops/ enchant equipment. Not to mention that you find gear that gives you -25% on each piece on higher levels. Considering the fact that if I cast a certain armor spell that takes ALL of my mana, I wouldn't say it's an exploit. You don't even have to go around like crazy leveling Enchant, you could just play the game as a mage. Enchant is a mage skill.
Yet you don't find Smithing powerful? Considering the fact that you can level it up in the blink of an eye? Enchanting levels up harder.
I got my free Destruction at about level 35, where it takes more than 1 Yol to kill an enemy. Maybe some can get around without 100% reduction in one school, but I find it hard to fight a Deathlord, (that throws you around like a puppet and the 1 shot kills you, and has a huge health bar ) without it.
