Game uses Login name instead of toon name in Guild chat!

Post » Tue Feb 11, 2014 4:53 pm

I've Played WoW. Had my account hacked without anyone knowing my user name (I even had an authenticator on the account). Played others where people knew my account name yet I was never hacked. The difference? I used stronger passwords. To this day, the only account I have had hacked was WoW despiet all the extra security they put in.

BTW you get keyloggers by going to shady sites or downloading shady things. So yes it has everything to do with not going to shady sites and making strong passwords.

a keylogger will have your information regardless of whether your name is displayed. I do not see this as a security risk. If you do legitimate things you will be fine. If you do illegitimate things you're screwed regardless.

There is NO security risk more than usual unless you're non intelligent and giving people your password.

<-------Here is my forum name. Please do something with it. Get into my account somehow. It should be the same difficulty as trying to get my game account. It also uses half my information.

And so your advice, after being hacked even with an authenticator (which I find hard to believe), is to just ignore it because others do this? Just use stronger passwords? You know Warcraft doesn't do this if you played it, and you know why. And you know it has nothing to do with a stronger password. It has to do with releasing information that should not be released. Im done. We most certainly disagree on the security of the games direction. So be it....You can have the final word, and give everyone half of your ACCOUNT login information to boot. Good luck...

No my advice is to stay away from shady sites and shady downloads, and to use strong passwords. It doesn't if someone knows your screen name. You are just as likely to hacked when someone doesn't know it. The only sure way not to get hacked is what has been said throughout this entire thread. Stay away from shady sites and downloads and use a strong password. if you are really worried about security, change the password every month.

Hold on, let me get my tin foil hat...that's better.

Not only does GW2 do it, but so does STO, CO, and NW. If only ZoS would use your handle as your unique identifier, then we wouldn't have to worry about if a certain toon name is taken.

wont it automatically send you email with a verification link if you try to log in with a different IP address? It did it for me for BETA so unless your email account is hacked as well i dont see this as a problem, of course if your email account is hacked odds are you have bigger problems.
honestly people, just use strong passwords and dont have the answer to your security question on your facebook page lol.

I don't visit shady sites, my antivirus blocks freaking everything, picky as a woman :P But yea my WoW account is authenticator as well and I have been hacked before. But I agree with the above, that, you just have to have better security on your end instead of making it the game or game companies responsibility to keep your account safe. That's like saying you won't lock your house when you leave cause it's the police's responsibility to make sure no one breaks in.

Im unsure if this breaks NDA but all characters are linked, and it would be impossible to keep track of a player since every ACCOUNT can join 5 guilds apparently. (im sure last info is out somewhere)
