Game uses Login name instead of toon name in Guild chat!

Post » Tue Feb 11, 2014 1:25 pm

This is a security issue that needs to be addressed ASAP! I know this breaks the NDA rules here but without people reporting this issue, it could lead to hacked accounts later in game after release. Please report this issue thru the "in game channels" using /bug or /feedback as soon as possible. Or email them directly. This is just a huge mistake on their part to use our login names in ANY chat channel... If this saves one hacked account Ill take the hit... It was worth it....

I thought that was the norm with some games?

Did you post this on the beta forums? It could be more useful than spreading the info outside.

Don't have a [censored] password. Oh, and don't visit shady websites.

No one is supposed to use your login name in any chat channel, unless you are stupid enough to create a toon with your own login name, and in that case you deserve to get your account hacked. NEVER EVER let people know your account name or pass... Please stop the arguments and disagreeing here, and report this to ESO in game or otherwise. Its a security issue for us all if you plan on buying it and playing for any length of time.

It's called "handles" bro, many MMOs have been doing it for awhile now.

If you dont have a password how do you know? Honest question.

Are you in beta? If you are you can access the forum.

If you are not how do you know?

If it is the same as I am thinking of, Guild Wars 2 is the same way. It shows my account name when I am in a party or a guild. Same thing with the GW2 forums.

I'm a little confused with what's going on but account security should be a priority.

Warcraft does NOT do this, and for good reason... I am surprised that others would be that stupid. It allows for people to steal your account by knowing a part of the login. But if it is as you say I guess I shouldn't be surprised at anything ...

It's pretty common.

Just don't have a crap password and use an authenticator. I don't see the issue.

There is no authenticator for ESO is there? Even so, using the login instead of the toon name in any chat is just really not smart at all...

This is only an issue for people that use admin as their password. Seriously, start using longer hexadecimal passwords people.

No- Its an issue for anyone that made an account, and downloaded the game. No matter what you use as a toon name, it uses your "ACCOUNT" login in the guild chat channel. Not your toon name. It has nothing to do with the password...

I really don't understand why your handle is bad in guild chat.

Guild Wars 2 openly allows you to view peoples user names, hasn't been a huge issue.

It is not hard to find a person's username, just make sure you have a solid password.

Ok makes sense, i can see the problem.

But again, did anyone bring the issue on the beta forum?

Because thats the place to post.

Not having witnessed this "bug" i cant really report it myself.

when you post in the guild chat channel, does it show your login name ? Does the rest of the guild see this name? See the problem now blue snacks? Do you want the whole guild knowing half of your login information, in other words????

Only an issue if you go to shady sites and/or use a weak password. Other games do this and I don't think any of them have a major issue of people hacking accounts.

You have never played Warcraft have you Nothv13... It IS a big deal. Thats why the #1 MMO does NOT do this, and for good reason. Any information regarding your login should never be posted in any chat channel. Tell me its no big deal when you get your toon to 50, and someone then hacks your account, takes your gold and then deletes your toon. It has nothing to do with going to shady sites. It has to do with key loggers and theives... Half of your login is displayed. How can you not see this as a security risk? If u want to win an argument fine... You win... Now please go report this because it needs to be addressed.
