In-Game VOIP [Where is it?]

Post » Mon Mar 10, 2014 3:28 am

How would you do it in a game though? It's not background noise in a game--It's in your face.

It would be a million times worse in cyrodiil. Creepy people running up to the wall and going "weeeeeee'rrrreee gonna get you!" or stupid things like that (I've heard that one personally in another game, they're just stupid, not funny). 50 people in the keep yelling over each other. People in actual 3rd party programs having to turn down the volume to strategize.

VOIP for group only, maybe! Anything more, NO.

VOIP in PVP will create WAY TOO MUCH LAG.

200 people in an area fighting, each one talking in VOIP lets say uses 100kb/s to transmit audio. Thats about 19.5 mb/s, WAY too much to transfer both ways.

And no, it doesn't matter if they are on the other side of the map, everything passes though one server when in Cyrodill.

Wow...

I guess you have also not played a game with Voip in it?

Devs are not idiots, most voip in games in limited to a realistic distance or the immediate 4-5 man group

in larger raid partys its devided up into squads.

Like seriously, is this everyones first online game or something?

You filter a channel for your group that is independent of one another. The same in Cyrodiil.

EDIT :

Then again... I like the idea of hearing an enemy yell threats.

What did you think it was?

The whole server of players just talking to one another over one massive channel?

*facepalm*

When you labeled me a troll, I stopped caring what you think. So, I'm not going to argue with you. Bye.

I've played in a few MMO that had this and I quite enjoyed it, being able to party with some randoms and communicate withought need of typing(I really try to use my keyboard as little as possible haha) I'd support this but there would, as previously mentioned, need to be individual/self/party/etc mute options.

Having said that I have all the typical 3rd parties, TS/mumble/raidcall/etc, installed already so I can live without as well :D

As an option of the feature, yes. And you can be completely off channel and just walk up to someone and have a personal and private and then turn it back off. The same concept as that chat bubble mess only vocal.

The other parts like the proximity and directional are another feature that could be customized through filters for distance, volume and even blocked players.

You only hear them once.

EDIT :

I respect your view as much as anyone else. Don't let disgruntled comments shed you away form dialog, my dear.

I can only agree if there is a feature to mute everyone.

I cannot see how anyone could challenge that otherwise. A simple toggle can make many happy. TBH, I am in absolute full support of any feature that adds, flexibility, choice and / or content as long as it's optional. No matter if i support the actual feature or not.

If a game has VOIP, there's usually a volume slider to accomplish exactly that. But you might run into some problems where people are trying to talk to you specifically and you're unable to respond, because they expect that you're able to hear them.

It's even more impressive you weren't abrasive or call people things while arguing. So, that was nice unlike some other people. Thanks.

I disagree. One of the very best friends I have in my life I have NEVER met or heard his voice. And I met him back in City of Heroes. There came a time in my life where homelessness was a very real possibility and this man, having never actually met me in person, never heard my voice...but only text communicated with me sent me enough to last me three months for rent, bills and food. WITHOUT EVEN WANTING TO BE REPAID.

I am a sad panda because he doesn't like this game overmuch, and plays a boatload of the Crap...err..CRYPTIC titles. I can't STAND Craptic games.

All that said....I don't much care for VOIP, but I'm not against its exclusion. I'd say have both forms of communication, with options to turn them both completely off should be included in every game.

Right. Built-in VoIP would be a godsend in groups that aren't all on the same guild voice system. This was one of the few points I submitted as feedback.

You are quite welcome. Making people aggressive is healthy, in some cases, but lets be reasonable here.

Now, back to your 30 meter thing. I am thinking of a general radius that is closer to the 10m mark . That gives a generous berth within a 20m area. Then you have a cone from your character that extends in front of you to the edge of your area. Anyone outside of your cone cannot hear you. Then you have a private filter for one on one with everyone else shut out. Lastly, the group filter.

So a proposed feature list could look like...

  • 10m radius
  • Player directional cone
  • Private
  • Group
  • Independently toggable

I wish I could give a specific answer, and maybe I'm thinking of a different application of the tech, but the office I work at uses a VOIP service where I can go in and modify sound input/ output to a certain degree- I haven't tried to change six completely, but have been able to raise/ lower pitch and tenor significantly so that, at least to me, ti six identity of the speaker was questionable. But again, it's just the VOIP system I've been handed at work, and I apologize I can't provide any more significant info (I'm at the 'push x to transfer call to jim, press xx to join conference level)

I assume the console versions will have this, or at least have some sort of UI intefacing with the party system of each console, so the legwork is mostly going to be done regardless. Doesn't seem like a stretch to implement it for the PC crowd. Then again the same could be said for controller support and we see how that's going...

Very powerful comment, indeed. It shows how there is an uncannily galactic generosity among the true heartfelt that are among us. A incredibly rare man among men.

Granted, there are always some sort of limiting nemesis that always lies ahead, be that time, resources, technology, or budget. However, the more free customization of the UI and various communication avenues will most certainly play a role in advancing the game.

3rd party VOIP is really good but I want in game VOIP too for all the random players I meet on my travel too. Especially proximity and group in game VOIP.
