Whataver else you do, make sure you follow a guide to "MMM for OOO", whether it's the official one(s) or, for example, http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=guides_mod_installation&subpage=mmmforooo_installation_guide.
Getting used to Wrye Bash (e.g., Bashed Patch) is probably a good idea, too. Though that might only be essential for FCOM, and not for MMMforOOO. Not sure, but no doubt one or more of the available guides will tell you. Also, make sure you read any readme text/html/pdf files that come with mods - they're there for a reason.
And certainly, install your mods via OBMM or BAIN (or a mix of both, if you prefer). Otherwise, things *will* go wrong. And use BOSS to put your mods in order, once they're installed. BOMM is very handy too, if you have MS Word installed on your PC - recommended. Otherwise, make sure you update the masterlist.txt file quite often (at least once a week, perhaps) - BOMM will do this for you, whenever you "run" BOMM.doc.
edit: Also, with any mod, get used to reading the OP of the current thread here for it (like, for OOO, and for MMM). Most will usually be found within the first few pages of threads. Sometimes, reading a bit further than the OP can be useful, too - updates, other users' experiences, modders' future plans, etc.
