Game World Size

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:44 am

That's right, regardless of how many dungeons, or quests, or etc. the game has. Assuming you could get any game world independent of those factors, your ideal size for Skyrim would be?

Oblivion was 41 square kilometers. I'd like something around 70-100 :)
That would be ideal to me.

If it was that big, and detailed to the normal levels of TES games, then I'd say your game would be released in 2013 by current standards.

Detail and content is more important than size IMO

Perfectly content with an Oblivion-sized world. Especially if there's going to be lots of interesting landmarks and extensive underground caves.

Not really. They just need to spread the dungeons out further.

I was hoping for 50 or 60 square kilometers at first. But now even after the news that it'll be around the same size as Oblivion, I still think that it'll be a bit bigger. Maybe around 45 square kilometers.

You'll end up with square miles of land with nothing of use. Quite a waste really.

Actually we have no idea.
We don't know how improved Creation Kit is compared to CS...

Perhaps it has capabilities of adding items and creating landscapes much easier and faster than before?
I can almost guarantee you that it has this. The question is how much?

We can't know for sure of course... but I'm just saying that it's possible. Technology and software advance really fast. Oblivion was almost double the size of Morrowind.

@ Lady of the Sky also has a good point. You can spread out dungeons more. Not too much though, but far more than Oblivion. Seriously... it shouldn't look like http://s2.n4g.com/media/11/newssi/15000/18861_0_org.jpg.

If the horses are still in the game as mounts I think Oblivion size is too small. Takes you too little time to ride from one town to another.

The actual size of the game world has not been confirmed. The quote you are referring to is very vague and is probably talking about the size of the game, not the game world. Note that he doesn't say "Skyrim is approximately as big as Cyrodiil"

Something larger than Oblivion, but not at the cost of interesting locations and landscape.
I'd rather have a smaller, but more interesting area, than a larger, bland area to explore.

I disagree. It can be made MORE detailed than Oblivion, in less time.

Detail and content is more important than size IMO

I disagree.

Big important cities that look like little villages, dungeons and ruins spaced a few dozen meters from each other, mountains that are not real sized, etc... THESE THINGS detract more from immersion then less detail and content.

Anyway, you CAN have a much bigger gameworld with lots of detail and content.

Generate most stuff procedurally than TWEAK things you want to be unique.

Just like the real world is all procedural, and only a few things are really "unique".

quite realistic, really

well, actually it SHOULD look like that. But the question is that in the Oblivion map, these things are a few meters apart. Increase the SCALE of the Oblivion map, and it will look the SAME, but the locales will be hundreds of meters apart.

Why have several things unique when the whole world can be hand built?

Hehe yeah I thought about this when I wrote it.
The scale matters of course. But what meant was Oblivion's "real in-game" cramped up world, and with the current scale. But as we all know how the in-game world of Oblivion is, I found it just easier to link Oblivion's map.

Not to mention the 20-25 towns which dot the landscape.

I just really hope we can see the whole map on screen if we want to. Give us a zoom feature for more precise navigating, but I hated that I could only see a select portion of Oblivions map, even when zoomed all the way out.
