Gamebooster

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:52 am

Many of us use Gamebooster to prioritize our RAM usage during playing Oblivion. I am a big fan of it.

Gamebooster recently update from v1.5.1 (or 1.6) to v2.0. The older version was freeware, but the newer version is shareware, and requires payment for some features that were free earlier.

With his in mind, I suggest that you do not upgrade to v2.0 if you have the older version, which IMHO is better.

I unfortunately downloaded the update over my previous installer, and don't have v 1,5 anymore. If any of you have the previous installer, could you please upload it somewhere? Please note that I am not asking you to do anything illegal - as the previous version s freeware, but just not easy to find (all the major download sites such as CNET have also updated to v 2.0). Thanks!

That's not true, actually. Just because it was released free does not mean that the author gave up all control of it. Distributing someone else's work without permission is always illegal, that's what a copyright is. "Free" is not the same thing as "open source", and in most cases "open source" doesn't mean the same as "public domain".

Heh, in before someone incorrectly cites Fair Use.

Thanks for the warning. I've avoided that update message for good reason it seems!

EDIT: Just checked out Leonardo2's links. The first led to The Elder Scrolls website  and the second led to a google page in a foreign language. If they don't work for you either, here's a site that still hosts a version 1.6 download: http://game-booster.soft32.com/free-download

a google page in a foreign language

Replace .se with .com and you'll have your English google instead of Swedish if it matters in what language those links irrelevant to search are. :shifty:

Am I missing something here? Cause it looks like all the old stuff from v1.6 is still available in the free version of Game Booster 2.0, only if you want even more 'boosting' might you upgrade to Premium.

You ask why there was an Elder Scrolls site link before you were directed and that's only to keep that link within forum rules. :grad:

The second link was only a Goggle search with your link on page 3/4 if I remember correctly. :user:

Thanks for the links everybody, especially alt3rn1ty - tha link to v 1.6 wrked.

@Dragoonwraith - thanks for the lesson on Freeware and copyrights - I only wanted to clarify that what I was asking for was not some warez type stuff.

@kyoma: The new version 2.0 has inbuilt ads, and requires payment to suppress background programs like AV programs - a feature that was free in previous versions. Although I support the author's rights - I despise being upgraded to a gimped version sneakily.

Thanks for the info Anithinks, I was about to upgrade to 2.0 as it is labeled "FREE" and the "improved defrag" and other stuff looked tempting.. <_<

Guys just ran a full scan of my laptop before I went out - Result http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=7689013Untitled.jpg

Apologies for spamming this in a few threads but I think for anyone being notified for individual posts, it was necessary.

Previous full scans have not detected this, I did an update of MSSE definitions before the full scan so obviously its a recent addition (should have listened to my instincts on this - and Arthmoors). Its not a serious threat, but devious enough to remain under the radar long enough to get a suspicious old git like me comfortable with it ... Good grief I thought the days of such underhanded advertising/marketing tricks were behind us. Seems not.

Just goes to prove what I have believed for a long time - If its free (exception being open source software (unless it involves google)) and involves advertising/marketing/third parties ... You can be pretty sure you are installing software designed by the biggest professsional bunch of pirates on the planet, you become the product. New mobile phones are being inundated with such crap under the trendy name of 'Apps'. Geo-locateable too.

Why do people use this proven malware? A clean boot is more effective and safe. Your choice.

Title of the topic is Gamebooster, so people following it may be interested in the find. And the original topic is relevant to modding I believe for optimisation which crops up in many topics here.

I apparently was lucky enough to download Gamebooster 2 during the short period of time when it was in beta. I am happily running Gamebooster 2 Beta 1.1, with most of the features of Gamebooster 2 and none of the ads :)

I don't know why anybody would ever trust any application that claims to "clean your RAM" or "intensify your processor". Either the author is deliberately misleading you, as "RAM cleaning" is at best completely useless and at worst actively detrimental, and "processor intensifying" is most likely doing nothing, but in the case it's automatically overclocking could cause hardware damage - or the author doesn't know what they're doing.

It's probably not the latter. Any "speed increase" you get with gamebooster could be replicated much more safely with a batch file. Stopping services is, with very few exceptions, almost totally useless. We're talking freeing up a few hundred k of RAM per service, maybe, and stopping applications and processes is something you, the user, can do in a safer way anyway. Never trust software who's selling point is snake oil.

I just ran it through Kaspersky, and it gives no warnings at all. I'd rather trust Kaspersky than MSSE. The adware warning probably comes from the "Clean & Boost PC" button, which lets you download another "trusted" IOBit program called "Advanced SystemCare", and from the popup that asks you to download the upgraded version. That's no reason not to trust the program itself.
And btw, I just updated my MSSE defenitions, and it doesn't report anything bad either about Gamebooster 1.6.

It might depend on where I got my copy from, if its in a different installer/wrapper . I remember there was a version of notepad++ around a few years ago which if not downloaded from sourceforge included spyware.

Edit: I dont have it installed btw, that was the installer exe sitting in my archives which was picked up by MSSE, so the 'Clean & Boost PC" button was not relevant in my scan. Its also possible that after installation anything the creators do not want you to find could be cleverly masked from current anti-malware scans?. Once installed your security software is effectively compromised.

At best, the app does what a much safer clean boot will. As it was written by game pirates, it most likely not a good idea to install. It is a proven malware. Why take the risk?

The app is worthless.

Oblivion is very sensitive to background processes running so I wouldn't call it useless to shut them down. I can free up to 275 MB doing so so we're not talking "a few hundred k of RAM". And I find Gamebooster more convenient to use then clean boots and not unsafe either.

Same story, Kaspersky doesn't give any warnings.

I use game booster myself and free up 106 mb's of RAM with it. I think its quite useful, much more convienient than a clean boot.

And as a fair warning to anyone going to GB v2.0,the gamebox exe that comes with it CHEWS UP YOUR CPU!!!!I was running the new ver. when I noticed a ton of lag playing Oblivion. Now mind you I get lag because my computer is crap(tho I am impressed it runs oblivion as well as it does),but things got way worse. It was a freaking slideshow. So I uninstall Oblivion thinking that the large quests were the culprits(after removing them I still had issues)it was then that I opened my task manager and saw that the Gamebox exe was eating 50-75% of my CPU.Seems redundant that a program designed to save on resources would provide such an Epic Fail. You have been warned.
