Gameinformer interview: The scoop on mods, DLC, and Survival

Post » Sat Feb 27, 2016 4:04 am

I loved it...and hated it...at the same time.
I love the realism.
I hate having a unique weapon become a paperweight due to no parts avaiable to fix it.

Infinite uses of armor and weapons is stupid.

Making the armor and weapons invincible is stupid.

Another member said it: a menu where you can toggle specific survival mode elements would make the most sense and appease everyone.

If Bethesda hasn't figured that out already, they will from threads like this.

Hope you like finding extra deliverers, junk jets, and broadsides once they break.

I'm definitely going to have to make a playthrough for this Survival mode at some point.

I agree. It's that extra level of realism I quite enjoyed. I wonder if they could make it an option. At the very least, I'm sure there will be a mod for it. So everyone wins.

Realism though? With the rate at which your weapon degraded, no one would have firearms at all by then. A prewar pistol managed to make it 200 years after the bombs dropped but I can't put through 300 rounds before needing to rebuild the entire thing? Also just doing it on the fly was silly. If they reduced the degredation rate and made it a requirement to repair at a workstation I could see people really getting behind it for "immersion" reasons.

Meh, I'm not really into the whole immersion thing. It's a game, it's not real.

I actually do. I love these kind of gameplay mechanics in RPG video games.

I downloaded a mod in late 2012 for the PC version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on PC that brought back the armor and weapons degradation system. The PC gamer who is a modder who made that mod even made some animations for when the weapons break, sadly the mod has been hidden for years now because it has a few bugs and it seems like that PC gamer who is a modder who made that mode doesn't feel like fixing the mod.

The previous system did need some "tweaking".
But, the concept is what I like.
Shart breaks.
I mean we need to fix settlements objects to to attacks...wny not our personal gear too?

Just one old dude's opinion...of course. :)

Degradation in a fantasy setting works well, but for shooters it's tedious. I actually like fantasy games with weapon condition, like FE for example (but not in the new one!).

And by finding those weapons, I meant it by the fact that you CANNOT find others, besides the junk jet at least.

I really like that the PC side's getting love. Guess I need to start trying out the Beta now.

The save thing would be a deal breaker for me actually. I want to save whenever I want. Save points etc always puts the game down from A to B level for me.

I'm sure if such a system was introduced, it wouldn't work like the previous games. It would work like power armor, you take the item to the appropriate workstation and it uses your junk resources to effect the repair. The net effect would be that the player carries around sufficient supplies to keep his stuff repaired in the field and never has to worry about broken weapons but effectively has less carrying capacity due to the repair materials.

Not sure it would add anything to the game.

I have been saying it for months, ever since I saw a YouTube video that Fallout 4 doesn't have a armor and weapons degradation system. That Bethesda Game Studios should make it so armor and weapons degrade slower and you can only repair the armor and weapons at workbenches.

I mean, I have no problem with them including it as an option. And if they made some tweaks to it I would try it. But rehashing the one from 3/NV I wouldn't touch. I already carry too much [censored] to worry about needing 2 combat shotguns, 2 combat rifles, 2 hunting rifles, etc. Maybe fixing using all our junk and only at workstations?

Same here, actually.
Which is why I am not buying The Division.
However, in Fallout...I could deal with it.
It's Fallout...I can deal with ALOT! :ahhh:

If they brought back item degradation, it would function essentially exactly like it does for Power Armor. That I'm sure of. I doubt they would, though, but who knows. Seems like that's something he would mention at least passively in describing Survival Mode, though.

Anyone else excited to see how mods for consoles plays out? I've been waiting on upgrading my PC until I find out exactly what it'll be capable of. I really had no expectation that it would come so soon either. I figured it'd be last priority

I'm really surprised that Howard only guesstimates a month for each console after the Creation Kit initially comes out. I figured it would take waaay longer.

Really, they have to make it something of a priority if it's to be a feature. You don't want to do it after all the DLC have been released and the players have moved on.

Of course, if they would go ahead and release it for the PC then when mod support went live for the consoles there would be a lot more content to choose from ...
