Gameinformer interview: The scoop on mods, DLC, and Survival

Post » Fri Feb 26, 2016 3:37 pm

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2016/02/22/todd-howard-discusses-fallout-4-dlc-mods-amp-survival-mode.aspx. I found this passed around in a few other threads, but it really deserves its own thread. A few worthy quotes:

On the DLC: "

The first one Automatron has a little quest line and this Pokémon-esque ‘kill robots, get their parts, build your own’ [gameplay]. The robot building is really deep. It’s great.

The Wasteland Workshop DLC is obviously for Workshop people. We wanted it to scratch that itch of ‘Can I build my own Thunderdome?’ You can build your own arenas, capture animals, and also build other things.

A lot of people gravitate toward the larger ‘Okay, I’m going to a new landmass, it’s somewhere new.’ That’s Far Harbor. That costs more, takes us longer, and there’re more people on it."

On survival: "We’re doing things like you can’t save, it only saves your game when you sleep. You can’t fast travel. There’re all of these diseases. We’re trying it all. It’s a different experience. We’re not trying to make it a ton harder. It’s harder because you’re doing more things. We want the combat to feel different, as opposed to just being a bullet sponge."

On mod support: "Our goal is between the first two DLCs. It’ll go up at that time on PC. In April. All of that stuff will go up on PC. People are beta testing it. There’ll be a lag on consoles. We want to get it up on PC and have it work. It’ll probably be a good month before it hits Xbox One, and another month for PlayStation 4."

EDIT APPLIED::
EVERYTHING, I ASSUMED, FROM HERE IS WRONG (Thank you "BOX MAAAN" for carifying):

So...the actual CK is coming to consoles?
I thought it was PC only?
I thought only the "approved" mods would be on console...but still made by PC users. Which, to me, made very little sense...why would PC users give a flip about us "console peasants"?

In the context of the interview, he means mod support in general. The interviewer's question was "When can we expect to see mods, especially on console side?". I guess I ought to edit my OP to make that clear...

Okay, thanks, Mate.
It is "quality time" with the Wifey...so I can't read the whole article right now.
Thanks for clarifying. :D

Sounds good to me. I like that Automatron has a quest semi-tied to it. I hope to make a robowarrior.... feared by robots and humans alike.

Survival mode is beginning to sound amaaa-zing. Nothing kills the suspense like a quicksave.

As far as what will be available for consoles, that's yet to be seen. There's been mention that they want us to be able to break the game essentially. Idk how much of that will be what but it sounds like from a couple questions Todd answered, they want consoles to be able to use the majority of PC mods. And as far as what has to happen for PC mods to go onto consoles? Well the consoles are essentially PC's at this point with very similar (almost same as far as xbox) architecture. There may be something that needs to be done as far as a conversion or something to get the PC mod onto the consoles mod portal but they have said it will be using the PC mods. So they don't have to make anything specific for us

So.
VERY.
True.

I "try" not to save before I know I will face "bad odds"...but the weaker side of my mind wins out so often.
I will deffinitely give this a try though.
Sounds like real changes to the game, and not just a copy/paste of the F-NV version.

The sleep save thing will definitely require the game remain stable. Being unable to save outside of sleep would turn the rare CTD into a ragefest. While I like that one in theory, I'm not sure I'd want it in practice.

The no fast travel thing will certainly make the Brotherhood more popular. :)

I'm actually not sure how to feel about the changes to saving. It's closer to a real iron-man mode, but I always advocated saving just for having something to back up on whenever I encountered a weird bug... plus, there's stuff in workshop mode I always try first before committing, so I scum saves a lot there. But man, it really does sound like a ton of fun.

I hope Automatron is just silly. I mean, ridiculous like Old World Blues or Mothership Zeta. Don't give us the Mechanist as a villain and then make it only slightly funny.

I wonder if Survival Mode is going to end up as a checklist. Do you want save only during sleep, no fast travel, and/or diseases rather than having Survival Mode fixed, then click on these options. Would certainly allow more freedom for us to customize our Survival mode.

You get free Vertibird rides if you're with the Minuteman anyways.

Unless you join the Institute. Yay, teleportation! (Or you can just beat the game with the RR)

Nope, the sleep save thing can't work and I'm sure won't make it in. It would impose too much burden on play time by almost forcing you to plan ahead. Just loading up to fool around for a few minutes would be a hassle if you couldn't save without finding a bed. Too many things can unexpectedly pull you away from the game, requiring a quick save.

I can see it now ...

"Do what you can to staunch the bleeding, Honey! I've got a full burden so I can run, but as soon as I make it to my settlement so I can sleep and save, we will take little Johnny to the emergency room!"

Not too long ago pretty much any game that even allowed saving used "save points"...heck many games (Like The Division) still use the checkpoint system.
Sleeping in a bed just sounds like either of those "time requiring" systems...to me at least.
Finding an unowned bed isn't that hard...it's not like your character has to "own" the bed and get the well-rested bonus to save.
Also...mods will probably just add a bedroll/sleepingbag for people to save wherever they want to anyway. ;)
And, what stops a player from just changing the difficulty setting, quicksaving, and changing it back when they "really need" to save for some "real-world" issues?

Yeah I kind of assumed if they impose the bed sleep only save that we'd get some kind of campsite option.

I also am interested to see if there are toggles for these. Would add a good amount of personalization to the playing if we could. ARK does a similar kind of thing when before loading the world

No fast travel? No saving? No bullet sponges for the tweaked Survival Mode?

Now if only the armor and weapons degradation system was added back for every difficulty settings.

The last thing we need is for weapon condition to return. Never was a fan, never will be. Seems like a lot of games with weapon degradation are ditching it for infinite uses.
