PC Gamer's Skyrim Preview (New Screen, MAYBE New Info)

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 3:36 am

Yeah I think the screen was in the 1st GI, but it was low quality, and divided in two pages (I Think), hope we see it in the internet soon :)

--Though its been confirmed 3rd person improved, Todd says that Skyrim will be more effective in 3rd person.

Please tell me this doesn't say what it looks like it's saying.

I have this issue of the mag. He's saying, generically, that 3rd person will be better overall (than it has been in the past).

The first paragraph detailing how the dragon prepares his attack gave me a nerdgasm... scratch that, Nordgasm.

--"we added rivers to dungeons as a way of naturally leading the player to certain destinations..."

As in they added rivers leading toward dungeons (the certain destinations mentioned) or they added rivers in dungeons leading to certain destinations within the dungeon?

Underground rivers ? And small lakes too, maybe? This is very cool !!!!!!!!!!

I wonder about that. I used to follow the rivers in the other games before branching out and found dungeons (lots of secret ones) that way until I was more leveled up where I could be out in the open. Does he mean that? Or like how they used to tell you about the rivers sometimes in Morrowind (Odai this, Odai that, something about the big crotch in Soltheseim etc..)?

--"...so Howard equpis the [Golden] Claw as an item, using it as a type of key." Is equipping non-weapon items (like in Morrowind) coming back?

Perhaps doors are unlocked by using a key(ring) on them, like in Deus Ex. This is quite good news as it suggests that other methods of opening doors, namely lockpicks, may be a realtime interaction as well. :vaultboy:

So correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that the only brand new info is as follows:

  • dragon crashing can "shake the whole mountain"
  • --"...The higher you climb, the more severe weather you get..."
  • --"we added rivers to dungeons as a way of naturally leading the player to certain destinations..."
  • --The city with the infamous "backwards windmill" in the trailer is Solitude, an Imperial city siding with the empire, as Todd states, but Windhelm is "the oldest pure-Nord city"
  • --"Markarth is very verticle. Whiterun is kind of in the middle--it's in the tundra, so that city is more open."
  • --"So if they play Crysis or anything like that, the mechanics of what we're doing, like interface-wise or controls, is not terribly different." [woah....]
  • --"You can swing your sword when it's low, you just cant do the bigger moves if you don't have enough stamina."
  • --Rabbits are confirmed! and they seem like tough little bastards

IIRC the Golden Claw quest, the chain lighting, circle of protection spells, bleeding perk that lets axes cause damage over time, etc., was mentioned in a couple of the preview articles following the Park City event.

Does the fact that they're talking to PC Gamer now mean that they've finally gotten around to working on the PC version?

I think it just means that the Xbox Gamer journalist was not available that day.

maybe I phrased that the wrong way - I didn't mean to cast any aspersions on the details you have collected from the article.

I only hoped to isolate the "brand new" details in order to update my personal notes, as well as possibly the Skyrim Compendium thread -- just want to make sure I'm not missing any details.

at this point I'm sooooo incredibly curious about how exactly magic is gonna work.

"The basic spells are easier to cast than it is to shoot some of the guns in first-person shooters."

That's kinda interesting. like what exactly does that mean? will we have like a fireball spell that's really quick, or will we actually be able to spam the magic button and fire away like a semi-auto rifle or something? Also, i think they talked about it before, but i hope we will be able to charge our spells, or at least some of them.

Liquid-fire sounds like a metaphor to me.

also Dragon remains staying like oblivion gates would be epic. That'd be cool if over a couple of days or weeks or so, they started to decay until they were just the skeletons left. that'd be sooo sick.

This bit of info was awesome.. -The higher you climb, the more severe weather you get

Maybe high winds and your stamina drains fast because of the cold...

Not sure how that can be interpeted from what you quoted. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying and that you're just hoping for it to be like that.

Anyway, this severe weather thing was confirmed before, but in different words. It was said before that snow started to fall when you climb mountains. Technically, it's done by simply adding different weather types for the cells that are represented by mountains.

It could be cool, but it could also be bad. Why could it be bad? Sometimes you want to climb a mountain to get a great, amazing view over a valley. You know, just to be amazed by its beauty. If it gets to snow too often then, that experience will be ruined.

You think it always snows on mountains.. Maybe the severe weather doesn't always mean snow, maybe high winds like i said giving you that great view.. But then again wind isn't so severe..

None of it's new. Or at least, I've already heard it. Although some of it is obscure info, so many will find this interesting. Nice post, and thanks, I wanna see that screen! :P

thanks a lot that bit about the new spells and having magic being easier to use than FPS games is awesome. Since this is in PC gamer will the game still be exactly the same as on xbox 360 cuz thats what i play. I know the PC has better graphics and mods but is that it

You think it always snows on mountains.. Maybe the worse weather doesn't always mean snow maybe high winds like i said giving you that great view..

When other magazines said that it started to snow, I think that would be the most likely weather. Other severe weather would still be... idk, extremely cloudy overcast with strong winds?
It would still not be the same thing to watch a beautiful sunset over a valley in clear weather as in a cloudy overcast. Try with Oblivion... it's a different experience.

I doubt Bethesda has done that though for most mountains. I sincerely hope not. It would be like if Bethesda stabbed themselves in the ancle.

To be honest I would like the weather to be harsh most of the time. It adds to the cruelty of the region, like I didn't complain the ash storms in Vvardenfell, they added so much to the unsettling atmosphere. I know i'ts cool to see distant mountains covered in sugar in a crystal clear day, but I hope those are rare omg-screenshot moments. I've had enough sightseeing in Oblivion, I want a really tough land and a real feeling of danger.

Yeah I agree, really tough, severe weather can add great feeling and atmosphere.
But so can "beautiful" clear weather :)

I think a mixture of both is the best, both on top of mountains and not on top of mountains. If it's too much of any time of weather, you'll get bored of it.

Nice read, thanks for posting :tops:

The artists have recently put rabbits in the game. I looked over, and there's this little rabbit. he's sitting there, chewing like a rabbit would, but I wanted see if they had really made it work, and he was just sitting there so I took my mace and went WACK!...and it went "Waaaaaaaahhhh!" But it didnt die

Chuck Norris in rabbit disguise confirmed :D

We're on the same page hear sir. I want my clear sunny days just as much as I want my cruel and cold snowy days.
