"It's a game for both" = It's a game for the people who don't like RPG's. Sorry, no matter how noble your intentions this has pretty much always been the case. I mostly suspect it's because of the "let's make it dumber so people will understand it easier" attitude, when it should be "let's just explain our complex game better."
Agree that the latter should be the design focus... I guess what's arguable here is whether the design decisions Bethesda have made fit into the former or the latter. So one might argue that, at least in some respects, Skyrim is more complex than Morrowind or Daggerfall. For example, now you've got a two-tiered system for how to pick skills - not only must you pick skills, but you've also got to pick skill perks! And you can't get all of them, so you need to pick wisely! Contrast that with previous systems, where there was just a single decision you needed to make - which of these skills should I use, or make my major skills - even though there were more options....
(I don't want to get in a fight about this, I just want to point out that it's not obvious just by making the distinction you make, where Bethesda lie. They probably lie on one side in some respects, and on the other side in other respects).
