Desktop. More freedom for me to upgrade as I please. On the downside though, it's not very portable.

Desktop is the only real way to go. Laptops are only for traveling and short periods of time when you're away from home.

As has been mentioned, the only real advantage to a laptop is portability and footprint. Every other conceivable advantage goes to the desktop/tower form factor.

Desktop is the more economical and smarter choice, but in my case I really needed a good laptop for work as well, so I went with a pretty powerful work machine that can sort of hold its own for most recent games at 1080p. (video card is AMD 5830M).

Working on building a home desktop in a couple months.

Desktop. Cheaper. Upgradable. Repairable.

Generally, desktops have a ton more power.

Desktop, though I wouldn't mind a decent laptop to compliment it. Much like my handhelds, I doubt I'd actually leave the house with it, but I like the form factor and option of mobility.

Desktop.

I was recently stranded with my laptop. While technically my laptop is capable of doing what I wanted to do it during the time, it was complete and utter torture: Screen too small to be productive and completely anti-ergonomic (not just unergonomic, laptops seem to be profoundly against the idea of ergonomic setups by their design!). I have a proper ergonomic setup for my desktop at home and work (everything in nice 90 degree angles, so the switch was just horrid.

I've never been pro-laptops, but that just solidified the matter for me. Laptops are NOT for prolonged use. They can be used for occasional work on the go, but that's it in my book. I'd rather die than use a laptop as my main machine again .

On a related note: I'm soooo [censored] tired of people who say "The desktop is dead".

Edit: I'm gonna go on this story again: I personally think that laptops have very limited value in the modern world. I've bought my first, and in all likelihood, last, laptop. With the advent of smartphones and tablets for mobile content consumption as well as netbooks, they really don't have nearly the niche they once did. These devices are lighter, have a longer battery life, even more portable, perfect for content consumption, and even able to do basic content creation on the go that may be needed. Then at home for the real powerhouse in content creation you have a desktop. A nice, ergonomic desktop. Your body will thank you for using a properly set up desktop instead of a laptop (which is impossible to get in an ergonomic setup thanks to the position of the screen and keyboard).

I voted desktop, and own several, even though my most recent purchase was a http://www.bestlaptopsdaily.com/asus-g73sw-xa1/ (i7-2630QM, GTX460M).

This, all of it.

I spent three years on a laptop due to space issues, now I have a Desktop. I can use a mouse without breaking my fingers and everything!

If you can afford it, go with a higher-end expensive laptop and dock it or just connect to monitor while at home.

However, given the obsolescence it's better go with something more upgradeable.

Economically speaking, desktop.

I have a laptop because moneydollars, but desktop is clearly superior for gaming.

moneydollarswise, I've found that it's a bit cheaper to build a powerful gaming desktop + buy a separate non-gaming laptop than it is to buy a decent gaming laptop.

I primarily use my Desktop, but I won't shy away from playing games like Torchlight on my laptop.

Gigantic desktop, it destroys all. Well there are a few bigger cases, but mine is still ludicrously huge.

I'm on a laptop right now. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220704)

I've had an unbelievable number of problems with it, have had to get it serviced 4 times and still have problems, and have nearly burned my house down with my 105 degree GPU, but it can play any game I've encountered without a problem, just as well as most reasonable desktops, I'm sure. Crysis is no problem for it. Desktops are certainly more powerful, but this worked better for me when I bought it. That said my next PC will most certainly be a desktop. I'm planning on moving to tablets for my on the go needs as soon as I have the money.

Desktop

I've never owned a laptop but I'll be needing one for when I start Uni soon, so I'll look for one which is reliable and has a pretty good graphics card/ processor.
