PC Gamers - What's Your Ideal FPS?

Post » Fri Oct 07, 2011 2:36 am

Considering that "cinema" (the "big screen" movies) run at 25 fps, anything at 30+ ("standard definition" interlaced TV rate) is great. I've noticed "flicker" in a few programs at around 25, but by 30 it's not an issue.

True, but those have motion blur in them, if they didnt have that, it would look incredibly choppy.

rig's in the sig. I'm fine so long as the fps is above 30, I don't see any difference with 60 although inconsistent frame rates are the devil and make games near unplayable for me. I'm hoping to max out skyrim on 1920x1080 with at least 40 fps although I expect 60+. I'm surprised others with decent rigs aren't shooting higher, but maybe that's because I wasn't on the PC when oblivion first came out and don't know what to expect.

I'm still using a CRT monitor so I need 80 FPS to get the smoothest gaming experience.

60 FPS is tolerable
45 FPS is annoying
30 FPS is a slide show IMO

My biggest problem with Oblivion was the wilderness loading and how it stuttered. RAMdisks eliminated that for the most part. If I had ~$4000 extra laying around I would try running a dedicated RAMdisk server where some games would be installed on the RAM.

64GB of RAM
2x 10Gigabit NICs (one in the server and one in my gaming PC)
Decent CPU (doesnt need to be that fast)

I prefer to just buy a RevoDrive 3 x2 SSD. 1,5 GB/s isn't RAM-level (Read) speed, but it's good enough :)

60+. Anything less tends to be choppy because frames do not flow into each other.

I can handle an average of 30, but 40 is the sweet spot for me. My rig has no trouble managing that at max.

I shoot for 60 FPS, so that when things get heavy and the FPS inevitably drops, things'll still look smooth.

20+ in combat. If I dont get that with maxed settings, then Ill start tweaking the ini or lowering settings. But 20 in combat is a bare minimum.

60FPS is nice, definitely, but not nice enough to justify the cost :P. Im fine at a general 30FPS with the occasional dip, but you do notice the difference from 30->60 a lot more in certain games(like Shooters). I never felt the need for high FPS in Morrowind or Oblivion personally.

Movies running at 25fps [actually most movies are at 24fps] are not a valid comparison due to the smoothness introduced by the low shutter speed. A movie running at 25 fps with "instant" shutter speed just like in a videogame would be really unpleasant to watch due to the heavy strobing effect.

Custom build/Frankenstein's monster

GPU: GTX570 OC 1280MB
CPU: QX9770 @ 3.2GHz 4.0+GHz <---last part before 11-11 to get
RAM: 8GB (4x2GB) Kingston HyperX T1
Primary Disk: Crucial C300 256GB SSD (Skyrim will be on S:\, a Skyrim dedicated, 24GB, SymLink'd, 34mm ExpressCard SSD)
Monitor #1: 30" Apple Cinema (2560x1600)
Monitor #2: 20" Apple Cinema (1680x1050)
OS: Win7(x64)

All wrapped in http://img.club.pchome.net/upload/club/other/2006/10/21/manitou_1161443220.jpg. Not made by NASA or anything and I might need to get a new MoBo and a second card to pull off 60fps, but here's hoping I won't have to...

I can't really tell the difference between, say, 45fps and 60fps.

However, there is a very noticeable difference between 20fps and 30fps. Low 20s seem to be the absolute minimum for a game to be playable. Above 30fps, the controls seem to feel much more responsive.

I get around 90-120 fps in TF2, but I honestly can't really tell the difference visually from other games where I get around 50-60 fps.

@1080p I get constant 60fps in Oblivion (with vsync enabled) and I get around 50-60 fps in Fallout New Vegas. If I can get at least 30+fps in Skyrim I will be happy.

Rig is in signature. Hoping to run at 1920x1080 at max settings and maintain 60fps. Below 45 gives me headaches. I'm going to get an ssd in a few weeks to help with stuttering.

1280 X 720 at least 30 FPS. I'm not too bothered about the unlocked thing, so long as I get half decent textures.

45+ is heaven
30 is ok
25 is acceptable if it doesn't happen too often
20- is unacceptable

Off topic but, slick case. I absolutely hate seeing all those cheap shoddy plastic "gaming" cases nowadays that are stuffed full of LEDs and sit on your desk like a strobe light/eye-sore(and if its not up on your desk, whats the point of all the LED lights?). Whats the cooling like? I dont see a front fan but it kinda looks like theres one on top(cant really see).

I was about to say so....2560x1600 is a serious res, maybe too much even for a single GTX 570.

But the GTX 5xx are some beasts of a cards, so maybe you won't need it :)

I only notice it when it drops under 20 or when it constantly fluctuates. If is stays steady then i'll never notice.

my ideal is flat 60, but even better is 120 on the right monitor.
but with my specs i'm expecting 40+ on just about maximum graphics probably excluding some of the antialiasing.

with a 560 TI, which is slightly better than yours.

Intel i7-920 2.66Ghz
Patriot Tri-C DDR3 1600 6GB
Asus 4870DK 1GB x2

I'm hoping to have it maxed or close to max at 1920 x 1080 with 45 frames or higher. I can compromise a bit with AA until I upgrade my GPU later this year.

At that res, more than 4x AA is a waste of FPS anyway...
