And of course the token press release. I swear, every time I read these things it's like some bizarre poem.
New York, NY – June 3, 2011 – 2K Games announced today that XCOM?, the intense sci-fi thriller in development at its 2K Marin studio, will be coming to the Xbox 360? video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation?3 computer entertainment system and Windows PC on March 6, 2012 in North America and March 9, 2012 internationally. XCOM is a gripping tactical action experience set in mid-century America, where the player leads an elite field team of specialized government agents into battle – combining deep, visceral gunplay with powerful sci-fi abilities. Together, they face a vicious and otherworldly enemy, who conspires to shatter our world and rebuild it in their own image.

“Every time I think of XCOM it gives me the chills, the kind that come from standing witness to the corruption and destruction of your world as you stand powerless to prevent it,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “I’m pleased to announce today that we will be bringing this experience to an even broader audience when XCOM comes to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in March 2012.”

Featuring a bold new origin story told from a first-person perspective, XCOM pits Special Agent William Carter and his veteran team against the threat of human extinction. But every enemy is an opportunity – players will strike surgically against the alien menace, capture their technology, and by the science of desperation – turn the invaders’ weapons against them. Armed with these lethal new tools of war, players will command their squad on XCOM’s front lines: Main Street, USA.

Gotta love the like/dislike ratio and all the comments in the video. And apparently they had even scrapped the work they had done since last year's E3 and started over.

I fear after looking at the trailer its another attempt to turn the classic TBS into an FPS....

In other news EA announced a New Wing Commander game... Aliens have taken over the TCS Arodypay and its up to you to throw them out the airlock.

The http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdVb4UnqO7A trailer looked much better... I hope they didn't scrap everything. :/

After watching the trailer, I'm left with this feeling of.."why"? I just feel like this game is..I guess I'd use the word "unnecessary"? What would I gain from playing this? It just looks stupid and pointless. And I've never heard of this series before, so that's just my unbiased honest opinion.

I like this trailer better than the ones before, actually. More focus on teamwork and discovered alien tech, and boy are those shapeshifters freaky.
Still, there is the small matter of the title. But I can as well pretend that the hyphen removes it far enough from its roots.

Well, I can't say I expected much. But you are right, it is funny that this is the new reworked version. Same garbage, nothing close to what the series is about.

Oh well, nothing is stopping me from playing Terror From the Deep.

I like the other trailer better, it looked more unique. This new one looks very generic. That's not saying much since the first trailer didn't impress me, and this one is even less impressive.

I think it looks fairly interesting to be honest. More so than the vast majority of shooters anyway. I like the setting and the effects look neat, but I don't have any speakers so that and the captions are about all I have to go on.

Oh look, the sequel to Enforcer. :P

They honestly would have had better luck raiding the Men in Black franchise...

Now there's how you can pat your fanbase on the head and give them candy and lead them to a warm and cosy place. Not to a creepy van, mind you, more like a nice Lamborghini, all styled out, where you feel comfortable. No, wait, that doesn't make it better.

Ultimatly no matter how good (or bad) this game turns out to be, it ends up as just another FPS. And imho another FPS is really not what's needed most these days or, for that matter, what stands to make the greatest impact.

Maybe that's just me
Must be, considering recent rumours about the Syndicate reboot.

I've never been a fan of Tomb Raider until now, that's how awesome that was. Game is going on my radar.

In terms of quality the game looks fine to me. I never played XCOM so I don't know how much it deviates from the source material. However if what everyone is saying is true then I won't get it just because I don't like sequels that alienate their fanbase.

I'm not overly familiar with the original games either. But I do feel that the FPS genre is saturated enough as it is right know, so taking what is today regarded as a fairly unique concept and turn it into another dime-a-dozen shooter feels like such a wasted opportunity.

Now this may sound stupid but...

That trailer reminded me more of the sims than x-com.
(the previous trailer reminded me of bioshock, this one just looks like a medium budget "because shooters sell" shooter).

bought 3 of the the original x-com games last year, now those are ruthless. If that was an fps, I would get slaughtered 25 times... per ground mission. (so yes I might be biased)

I liked the first movie myself, that's what I mean: given this gameplay demo they might as well have gone for an IP with even greater recognition and one that's equally irrelevant to the game.

Or just create an original setting... It baffles me how they just want to shoehorn this into the X-Com legacy. It's like saying, "There's an alien invasion! It must be X-Com!" when it seems a lot more like Destroy All Humans.

I thought it seemed that they are exactly where they were a year or so ago. It's not a franchise that I'm familiar with so time will tell.

It's a team-based game featuring a special unit fighting against aliens and slowly utilising the tech of those aggressors. No, totally doesn't sound like X-Com.
